Following the passing of band member Liam Payne, Zayn Malik dropped a new rendition of one of the band’s most well-known songs just last night, giving a gloomy ode to a much-needed reunion.
Zayn Malik shared a voice note from the new One Direction song That’s What Makes You Beautiful on Instagram. Uncaptioned, the simple recording has added fuel to the already-sparked rumours of the beloved band reuniting following the early death of former-member Liam Payne, 31, last year.
His 53.8 million fans, who had been speculating the reunion of the group’s final four members after Payne’s passing on October 16, 2024, were enthralled by the recording featuring Zayn’s emotional rendition of the 2011 global song. One fan wrote on social media that “the bare thought of Zayn randomly singing 1D songs makes my heart swell.” Malik responded, “I NEED THIS TODAY, thank you for blessing my ears.” Many people assumed that this would serve as a prelude to the band’s reunion in 2025, something that was said to be planned for years.
Zayn’s soulful take has also been reposted on X (Twitter) alongside a GIF of a person falling to their knees, receiving over 45, 000 views in last 20 hours. A fan going so far as to admit: “I thought I was hallucinating”. Malik, who was given the first role in the band in 2015 to pursue a solo career, has faced the greatest reunion requests for the past ten years and has chosen a more mysterious approach to celebrity, as is his customary solo role.
The 32-year-old singer barely acknowledged his days in One Direction, which are now mostly known for his on-again relationship with ex-mother of his child, Gigi Hadid, as the most uncommon person to be seen on social media in comparison to his fellow bandmates. Fans believe that his decision to record and sing a 1D throwback must have a significant impact, possibly bringing back some of his old band’s nostalgia and heartache. Some claim that Zayn is humming Payne’s legacy by reviving the classic, which led to his untimely death, which has resulted in three charges that have been dropped.
The spotting of Louis Tomlinson at Malik’s concert at the end of January this year was another sign of a rekindling between the 1D’s members. Fans were visibly shaken after Louis, 33, made a surprise appearance during the Stairway to the Sky tour and has never been shy to express his disappointment and anger at Zayn’s “broken up the band.” After the tragic shock of Payne’s passing, it was reported that the singer let things go.

One fan shared they were “shaking so bad”, another adding they “honestly never thought this would happen again”, one commenting “Don’t f**k with me”, in disbelief, and audience member spotting “them leaving together”, added: “My heart can’t take this!!! How is it even happening!!!!!! Literally so happy!! “!, and one predicted a “Zouis]Zayn and Louie] selfie incoming”, stating that “If we get a Zouis selfie, I won’t survive! Its happening!! I’ve prayed for this for so long”.
After a lengthy break, the pair reunited in November during Payne’s private funeral. Following the accident in October, Malik had to postpone the start of his Tour, but he did not completely cancel it. During his song Stardust, Zayn honoured Payne by having a blue screen projected on stage reading: “Liam Payne 1993 – 2024, love you bro”, accompanied by a red love heart. Fans have expressed and reawakened hope for the band to come together once more despite there being no official confirmation from Zayn, Louis, Harry Styles, or Niall Horan. With the resurgence of boyband nostalgia and documentaries, and the soon-approaching Oasis tour, 2025 appears to finally be right time to reunite.
