Laura Dahlmeier, the double Olympic biathlon champion, passed away in a Pakistani mountaineering accident.
The German, 31, was buried in rockfall on Monday while on a trek through the Karakoram mountains.
After the accident, which occurred at about 5,700 metres (18,700 feet), her climbing partner, Marina Eva, called emergency services.
Rescue teams immediately set out on a rescue mission, which included expert climbers from Germany and the United States, but the bad weather prevented their searches.
On Wednesday, Dahlmeier’s management company confirmed her death.
According to her management, Dahlmeier most likely passed away on July 28th, the day of the accident.
No-one should risk their lives in a situation like this, according to them, claiming that Laura Dahlmeier’s express and written will was to do so.
In this case, she requested that her body be left on the mountain. This also conforms to the wishes of her immediate family.
Dahlmeier was a “person with heart, attitude, and vision,” according to the German Olympic Sports Confederation.
Kirsty Coventry, president of the International Olympic Committee, described Dahlmeier’s passing as “deeply shocking for all of the Olympic movement’s members.”
She continued, “She lost her life in her beloved mountains. She will endure a lifetime of memories.
According to German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, Dahlmeier was “a role model for peaceful, joyful, and fair coexistence across borders” and “ambassador for our country around the world.”
A mountaineer with experience, Dahlmeier, won two gold medals and one bronze medal in Pyeongchang in 2018, representing Germany at two Winter Olympics.
