From her alleged alleged high-profile romance to her current partner Louis Partridge, all of whom have inspired her hit songs have been rumored to include a number of high-profile affairs.
As one of pop’s leading voices on the agony of young love, it’s fair to say Olivia Rodrigo has had her share of personal pain. “Her first album Sour was very much written in the pit of despair, and most of the songs seemed to be about losing the same boy,” says BBC music correspondent Mark Savage. “She was definitely in that place where you’re stuck in a cycle and can’t think about anyone or anything else.”
With 22-year-old Olivia – who is now in a relationship with Louis Partridge – admitting that Sour was inspired by “earth-shattering” heartbreak, she told how Drivers License was based on her own journal entries. “I realised part of the reason I wanted to get my licence so bad was because of… this boy,” she said, sharing an excerpt from her diary.
“I always felt bad about being too young to drive over to see him.” It was widely assumed the boy in question was her ex, High School Musical: The Musical: The Series co-star Joshua Bassett, who was rumoured to have moved on with Sabrina Carpenter after he and Olivia broke up in July 2020.
She never confirmed any of those claims, but Mark points out that it doesn’t matter what the song’s subject matter is. “With Olivia, it’s absolutely important whether you feel what she’s feeling,” she says.
She and Joshua first met in early 2019, playing on-screen love interests Nini and Ricky, when they were 16 and 18 respectively. Regular Instagram selfies sparked speculation they had grown close off-camera, and at one point Olivia said, “I love him so much. He’s my best friend… It was like I wasn’t acting.” But by the following summer, it was claimed they had split, with Olivia posting a TikTok video in which she ate a muffin with her song All I Want playing in the background. “All I want is a good guy / Are my expectations far too high?” she sang, while captioning the clip, “And that’s on failed relationships.”
Despite the mystery, it is said that her previous relationship with her Bizaardvark co-star Ethan Wacker ended peacefully. Although it was unknown when they first began dating in 2018, and Ethan, now 23, posted a message on Instagram in January 2019 saying, “Happy 6 months! The best is in you. Olivia also mentioned in a photo that the pair enjoyed a trip to Hawaii that said, “Heaven is a place on earth wit u.”
Although it’s believed they parted in the summer of 2017, they remained friends and Olivia commented, “He’s the best,” while Olivia later said, “He’s the best”! when Ethan made the announcement that he would not attend college in 2020.
Olivia reportedly had a relationship with music producer Adam Faze the following year. Again, it was never confirmed, but the two were photographed kissing at separate shows. However, it was believed to have ended when Olivia deleted Adam’s Instagram follow.
She soon became friends with DJ Zack Bia, who also attended her 19th birthday celebrations in February. However, according to reports, the romance had already slowed down by August, presumably as a result of conflicting schedules. We ended up not furthering our relationship because we hung out, because we’re both busy. You’re aware that there never was drama.
Due to the rumors that the lyrics to Olivia’s fiery comeback single Vampire, Vampire, were about Adam, who was 28 at the time, or Zack, who was 29 at the time, caused friction over a woman who was older than her. She apologised, “Went for me and not for her,” and she defended her position. “Grow girls your age know better.
Unsurprisingly, there was no official response, and Mark asserts that “we’ll never know who Vampire was about, and that’s probably for the best. Trying to guess is almost half the fun in the modern era of internet sleuthing. Olivia’s argument that keeping quiet about the subject of her songs helps them develop their mystique
Olivia did point out that a number of bad relationships had had an impact on her second album, Guts, by saying, “Maybe I dated people I shouldn’t have, maybe I shouldn’t have.” Additionally, she stated to fans in LA that she had met “so many people that I’ve dated on Instagram DM.”
Some of them are “somewhat dubious.” She also mentioned a serious red flag in another conversation about potential love interests. I ask them if they would like to travel to space, but I never date them if they do, she said. I simply believe that you’re a little too stuffed with yourself to travel to space.
Olivia has been dating British actor Louis Partridge for more than 18 months, which is thankfully far better than her romantic status. They first met in October of that year in London after they had a number of nights out together.
Louis, 22, who starred in the Enola Holmes films and Apple TV+ series Disclaimer , then showed up to support Olivia at iHeart Radio’s Jingle Ball in New York that December, singing along with her best pals, Conan Gray and Madison Hu. In August 2024, they made their debut at Venice Film Festival, with Louis tenderly kissing Olivia on the head in one picture. They also enjoyed a lowkey outing to watch Manchester United play Chelsea in November, and surprised locals when they took a trip to north Wales the same month.

Olivia did a post on Louis’ Insta last year that read, “Welcome to the 21 club angel boy!!!” despite her best efforts to avoid discussing him in public. The pair have also been spotted in particular love in recent months, dancing in the Caribbean with friends Tate McRae, the Kid LAROI, Iris Apatow, and Sam Nivola, the White Lotus actor, for a couples’ vacation in the Caribbean.
Louis frequently supported Olivia during her Guts World Tour and during her headline performance at Glastonbury, where she was also spotted watching Pulp play while on his shoulders. Many people commented on her change to the lyrics to “Think I’m in love” to “Cause I’m in love” during her Dublin show last April. It even suggested that the song, which was featured on the exclusive remaster of Guts, was intended as a message to the pair’s upcoming plans: “Oh God, I’m gonna marry him/If he keeps this sh*t up,” she sang.
Olivia once described her intentions for the wedding in the following years after admitting to being “a hopeless romantic.” She said, “I just want to be, like, 30, having brunch with my girls on the weekends, and having two babies and a husband in a chic mid-century modern house.” Before she reaches that stage, there might be a little more drama, though. Olivia told me, “I still have a few heartbreaks left in me,” she said when we spoke with her last time. She may not yet be ready to settle down.
