North Korea’s Kim lauds ‘heroic’ troops deployed with Russia in Ukraine war

During a meeting with army officers from their overseas operations, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un praised his troops, which were deployed to assist Russia in its conflict with Ukraine, according to state media.

According to the official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) on Thursday, Kim “conveyed warm encouragement” to the officers and soldiers serving in the Kursk region of Russia. In this regard, Pyongyang is said to have sent more than 10,000 fighters, according to intelligence agencies.

In a speech addressed to military personnel in the capital, Kim was quoted as saying, “Ours is a heroic army.”

Our army is now carrying out both its current and previous missions. He continued, “It will do it in the future as well.”

Russia and North Korea have been establishing increasingly close ties, with North Korea confirming for the first time in April that it had sent a contingent of its soldiers to the front lines to fight alongside Russian forces.

The strategic partnership agreement, which includes a mutual defense pact, was signed by Kim and Vladimir Putin in June of last year.

In addition to artillery shells, missiles, and long-range rocket systems, Pyongyang has sent more than 10,000 soldiers to Russia’s Kursk region in 2024, according to South Korean and Western intelligence agencies.

According to Seoul, about 600 North Korean soldiers have died and tens of thousands of others have been injured fighting for Russia.

Kim’s comments come as Donald Trump, the president of the United States, has held important discussions with the leaders of both countries recently.
