Noel Clarke arrives at planned start of his libel trial against Guardian publisher

On Wednesday, Noel Clarke filed a libel and data protection lawsuit against the Guardian publisher. He was present at the High Court.

The actor, 49, is suing Guardian News and Media (GNM) for several articles. According to an April 2021 article, 20 women who knew Clarke in a professional capacity reported allegations of misconduct. When the articles were published, Clarke “vehemently” denied “any sexual misconduct or wrongdoing” in a statement.

GNM has stated that it will defend its reporting as accurate and beneficial to the general public. Clarke arrived at the Royal Courts of Justice on Wednesday in a dark suit, blue shirt, and tie.

A Guardian spokesman previously stated that Clarke will be presented with evidence by 32 witnesses. Only liability is anticipated to be the subject of the trial. If Clarke is successful, it is not believed to be responsible for the assessment of any damages.

Clarke’s first TV show, Metrosexuality, achieved worldwide fame. He gained notoriety for his roles in Auf Wiedersehen, Pet and Mickey Smith in Doctor Who. In the acclaimed film trilogy Kidulthood, Adulthood, and Brotherhood, he later wrote and starred. Additionally, he produced two of them.

Clarke won the Rising Star award in 2009 and was recognized by Bafta in 2009. In 2021, he also received the award for outstanding British contributions to cinema. Bafta’s membership and his outstanding British contribution to cinema were suspended in response to the allegations made in The Guardian.

In April 2022, Clarke sued the publisher for libel, and he has been to several of the case’s preliminary hearings. On Thursday, the trial of Mrs. Justice Steyn could be opened, with a hearing set for 10am. The trial is scheduled to last four to six weeks, according to the schedule. A decision will likely be made in writing at a later time.
