However, she rallied and won 12 of her 14 matches, going on to win 1-6, 6-4, and 6-1.
Jones told New Zealand’s Sky Sport, “I’m actually really relieved that’s over.”
“It’s difficult to pick yourself up when you play someone like Emma in the first round, especially in these circumstances,” Emma said.

Jones, the rung below the main tour, won two WTA 125 titles last year, making it into the top 100.
Due to having a rare genetic condition, she was previously told by doctors that she would not play tennis professionally.
Jones has three fingers and a thumb on each hand, three toes on her right foot, and four toes on her left because of Ectrodactyly Ectodermal Dysplasia (EEC).
In just over two hours, Jones recovered from the scorching conditions in Auckland by saving nine of the 13 break points.
She was “unplayable” for the first and a half of her first set, and I found it very difficult to adapt to playing both at night and during the day. Jones added that it is much quicker.
US advances to the United Cup semi-finals with Gauff.
In other matches, Coco Gauff led the United States’ defending champions to the semi-finals of the mixed team competition.
After compatriot Taylor Fritz fell to Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-4 7-5, world number four Gauff defeated Greece’s Maria Sakkari 6-3, 2 and 6-2.
The American duo defeated Sakkari and Tsitsipas 4-6, 6-4, and 10-8, in a high-quality deciding mixed doubles matchup with Christian Harrison.
On Saturday, they will face either Poland or Australia as their opponents in the final four.
Iga Swiatek, the reigning champion at Wimbledon, defeated Netherlands’ Suzan Lamens 6-3, 6-2 to advance to the quarter-finals.
