NiMet Predicts Widespread Thunderstorms, Rainfall Across Nigeria July 7–9

From Monday, July 7 through Wednesday, July 9, 2025, the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a three-day weather forecast warning of frequent thunderstorms and rainfall in various regions of the country.

The agency’s website recommended that both the northern and southern regions take precautions against stormy weather conditions.

 

Central Region

NiMet forecasted scattered thunderstorms in the later part of the day for the Central zone.

In the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nasarawa, and Niger states, cloudy skies and moderate rain are forecast for the region’s later in the day, and later in the day, localized thunderstorms with moderate rain are expected.

A chance of morning thunderstorms and light rain over parts of the FCT, Nasarawa, and Niger states is forecast for Tuesday, with cloudy skies and periods of sunshine expected throughout the region.

Most of the area is susceptible to localized thunderstorms and moderate rainfall in the afternoon and evening hours as the day progresses.

On Wednesday, the region is expected to experience cloudy skies and some sunshine in the morning.

From the afternoon until the night, with moderate rainfall, localized thunderstorms are forecast for the majority of the area.

 

Northern Region

In some areas of Taraba, Sokoto, Zamfara, Katsina, Kano, Jigawa, Bauchi, Borno, Kebbi, and Kaduna, it said thunderstorms were forecast for the morning of Monday, with isolated thunderstorms and rainfalls affecting Gombe, Borno, Yobe, Bauchi, and Kaduna states later in the day.

On Tuesday, according to NiMet, sunny skies and patches of cloud were expected in the Northern states. However, thunderstorms and moderate rainfall were forecast for the entire region by the afternoon.

In the morning, thunderstorms are forecast for parts of Sokoto, Kebbi, Katsina, Kaduna, and Taraba states for Wednesday, followed by additional storms later in the day, which will affect the entire region.

 

 

Southern Region

 

On Monday, cloudy mornings are forecast for the southernmost states, including Imo, Abia, Ebonyi, Anambra, Enugu, Lagos, Ogun, and Ondo.

Delta, Bayelsa, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, and Rivers States are the others.

Moderate showers will be possible in Ogun, Ondo, Osun, Oyo, Imo, Ebonyi, Enugu, Anambra, Abia, Edo, Delta, Rivers, Bayelsa, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom states by afternoon.

Abia, Ebonyi, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Rivers, and Bayelsa states are expected to experience early morning rain on Tuesday.

The entire area is anticipated to experience moderate rain later in the day.

With moderate to heavy rain forecast for most of the region, the region’s delta, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, Cross River, and Bayelsa states, NiMet predicted a similar pattern on Wednesday.

Strong winds could cause damage and precipitation events, according to NiMet, which advised residents to be cautious during this time, especially in areas with thunderstorms.
