NiMet Forecasts Dust Haze, Thunderstorms Nationwide

From Monday through Wednesday, the Nigerian Meteorological Agency has predicted a mix of dust haze, isolated thunderstorms, and sunny weather throughout the country.

The weather outlook from NiMet, which was released on Sunday in Abuja, contained the forecast.

The wind carries fine dust particles, typically from desert areas, into the atmosphere, creating a weather phenomenon known as dust haze. This results in visibility that is less visible, sometimes to less than 1, 000 meters, due to the hazy or cloudy appearance.

The northern regions of Kebbi and Kano States will experience moderate dust haze, according to NiMet, with horizontal visibility of 2 km 5 km over the area. The rest of the northern States will experience sunny and hazy skies throughout the forecast period.

Parts of the Federal Capital Territory and Niger states are expected to experience moderate dust haze with horizontal visibility of 2 km to 5 km over the central region, while the rest of the states are expected to experience sunny and hazy skies the entire time.

Sunny skies with a few patches of cloud are anticipated for the southern region, along with light rain and afternoon thunderstorms over parts of Bayelsa, Lagos, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom States, according to the statement.

The agency announced on Tuesday that northern regions of the state of Kano and Kebbi are expected to experience a slight dust haze, while the remaining northern states are expected to experience sunny and hazy weather.

Throughout the forecast period, NiMet predicted sunny and cloudy skies over the central region and the possibility of sporadic thunderous activity over Plateau State in the afternoon and evening hours.

The forecast also highlighted health, travel, and aviation issues as suspended dust particles and intermittent rainfall are expected in parts of the country, along with reduced visibility expected in some areas.

In addition to noting that people with asthma and other respiratory issues should be cautious in the current weather conditions, NiMet cautioned that dust particles are suspended and advised the public to take precautions.

It’s sunny with patches of cloud, with the potential for afternoon or evening thunderstorms and light rain to fall over parts of Ogun, Ondo, Edo, Bayelsa, Rivers, Lagos, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom States for the southern region.

The agency had predicted cloudy, cloudy skies for the entire forecast period, including the northern and central regions by Wednesday.

The southern region is expected to experience light rain and afternoon or evening thunderstorms with light rain, according to NiMet, with the exception of Oyo, Ogun, Ondo, Edo, Bayelsa, Rivers, Lagos, Delta, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom States.

Public Advisory

Nigerians were urged by NiMet to take caution over the potential health and safety repercussions of the current weather.

Additionally, the agency issued a cautionary note to passengers and airline operators for those traveling in the rain. For effective operation planning, airline operators are advised to obtain airport-specific weather reports (flight documentation) from NiMet.
