Nigeria police charge Joshua driver with dangerous driving over fatal crash

According to police in Ogun State, the driver of a car driven by British boxer Anthony Joshua and involved in a fatal collision in Nigeria has been charged with reckless and dangerous driving.

On Monday, Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, 46, and two of his friends, Latif Ayodele and Sina Ghami, were traveling through a busy highway that connects Lagos and Ibadan when their Lexus SUV collided with a stationary truck.

“The defendant was given two sureties and five million naira ($3, 480) bail.” According to police spokesman Oluseyi Babaseyi, who spoke to the AFP news agency on Friday, “He was remanded pending when he meets his bail condition.”

Since being released from the hospital on Thursday, Kayode has been in police custody.

Joshua and the driver had minor injuries, according to Nigerian police and state officials who said Ayodele and Ghami passed away at the scene.

The Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency in the Ogun State, where the accident took place, reported to AFP earlier this week that preliminary investigations revealed that the car was moving at an excessive speed and had burst a tyre prior to the collision.

On Wednesday, Joshua and his mother paid their respects at the funeral home where his friends’ bodies were being taken for repatriation.
