Four of the six competitions at this year’s 2025 World Athletics Relays will be held by the athletes from the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), which has confirmed that the nation’s contingent will compete in the men’s 4100 meters, women’s 4100 meters, 4400 meters mixed relay, and the newly introduced 4100 meters mixed relay.

The 10th through 11th of May is when the World Athletics Relays are scheduled to take place in Guangzhou, China.

Chidi Okezie, Emmanuel Ojeli, Samson Nathaniel, Patience Okon, Praise Idamadudu, and Omolara Ogunmakinju will lead Nigeria in the 4400-meter mixed relay.

The 4100-meter mixed relay team will be chosen from a pool made up of Success Umukoro, Ashe, Alaba Akintola, Udodi Onwuzurike, Rosemary Chukwuma, Favour Ofili, and Ashe.

Nigeria’s entry into these events was aided in part by a number of qualification factors, including top-notch performances at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium during the African Games, which took place in 2024, and a designated competition at the Paris Olympics at the Stade de France in 2024.

Israel Inwang Mfon, the AFN’s secretary, stated that the organization’s decision to field teams in just four events was motivated by Nigeria’s strengths and the desire to increase medal chances.

The federation placed a premium on areas of comparative advantage and medal prospects, he said, when fielding the four events.

Following previous years’ events in the Bahamas, Japan, and Poland, the World Athletics Relays will be held in China for the seventh time.

The 4 100 metres mixed relay made its global debut this year with a historic year. The first time the event will take place in Guangzhou on the world stage, following a woman-woman-man-man rule.

World Athletics will begin the event’s records on January 1, 2026, with 2025 performances serving as the benchmark. In 2026, the event will be a part of Budapest’s inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championship.
