Zelenskyy on security guarantees shuttle as fighting rages in Ukraine war

In Copenhagen, Danish and Nordic leaders are meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who is attempting to impose security guarantees on Kyiv in the event of a peace deal to put an end to Russia’s hostility there.

The Nordic-Baltic nations will talk about how to give Ukraine more support on the frontlines and in the negotiation room, according to Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen’s office’s statement on Wednesday.

The leaders of the Nordic-Baltic Eight (NB8), Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, and Sweden, are gathered to discuss Ukraine’s future with Zelenskyy.

Alexander Stubb, the president of Finland, stated on Tuesday that Ukraine was making progress in implementing security guarantees, but he emphasized that such measures would only be implemented once a peace agreement was reached.

We need to coordinate security arrangements with the United States, which essentially will provide the backstop for this, Stubb told reporters. We’re focusing on these issues with our defense chiefs, who are creating the precise plans for how this kind of operation might look.

He continued, “We’re making progress on this, and hopefully we’ll find a solution soon,” but he expressed concern for a potential ceasefire or peace deal with Russia in the near future.

The “coalition of the willing”

At a summit of Ukraine’s allies on Thursday, NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte said he anticipated clarity on what security guarantees Europe can offer Kyiv once the war is over.

At a press conference with Estonian President Alar Karis in Brussels, Rutte said, “I anticipate tomorrow, or soon thereafter, to have clarity on what we can deliver collectively.” That allows us to speak with the American side about their demands for their participation in security guarantees even more intensely.

The largely virtual meeting of the leaders of the so-called “coalition of the willing,” a group of Western nations working on long-term agreements for Ukraine and NATO, will be co-hosted by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron. In Paris before the summit, Zellenskyy moves on to meet Macron tonight.

According to officials in the West, these guarantees are intended to deter Russia from starting a new war once the hostilities have ended, whether through a ceasefire or a permanent peace agreement.

They are anticipated to concentrate on an international force to reassure Ukraine as well as continuing military support for Kyiv. However, US involvement would only be possible with US support, according to European leaders.

Donald Trump, the president of the United States, promised American involvement last month, but Washington has not yet specified its contribution. Rutte hoped to reassure NATO members in eastern Europe that resources for Ukraine’s security guarantees wouldn’t go to the expense of the alliance’s own defenses.

He said, “We must always consider how the impact will be on the NATO plans, and this means we must avoid spreading our resources too thinly.”

Moscow, in contrast, opposes the idea of European troops stationed in Ukraine and insists that any upcoming resolutions must take into account “new territorial realities.”

For peace to last, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated in an interview with Indonesia’s Kompas newspaper that regions that Russia annexed must be “recognized and formalized in an international legal manner” including Crimea, Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhia, and Kherson.

Many analysts believe that one of President Vladimir Putin’s main demands will be for Ukraine to acknowledge its authority over the Donbass, which is still under Kyiv’s control, as Trump has suggested any eventual agreement would involve ceding some territory.

Zelenskyy has repeatedly refrained from making these concessions, warning that losing any territory would stifle Russia’s ability to launch fresh attacks in the future. It is also prohibited by the Ukrainian Constitution.

In Kherson, Russia occupies more land.

Russia’s assault is getting worse in eastern Ukraine as the diplomatic process gets worse. Its forces claim to have encircled and now seized “about half” of the strategic city of Kupiansk in the northeast of Kharkiv. The Donetsk settlement of Fedorivka was reportedly under the control of the Ministry of Defense of Russia.

Russia launched a massive overnight airstrikes against targets in nine different regions of the sky. At least four railway workers were hurt, according to Ukrainian officials, while explosions erupted close to the country’s borders.

In an attack on the Znamianka community in the Kirovohrad region, according to Ukraine’s emergency services, five people were hurt and 28 homes were damaged. After strikes destroyed residential structures and started fires in Khmelnytskyi, transportation services were faced with “significant schedule disruptions.”

According to local authorities, two people died in the Polohivskyi district in Zaporizhia as a result of Russian shelling, and two more died in separate attacks in Kherson, Kyiv, and Donetsk. At least five civilians have been killed nationwide as a result of the most recent strikes, according to the independent news outlet Kyiv Independent.

Russia claimed that in the past 24 hours, it had shot down 158 Ukrainian drones, while claiming that nearly 100 people had been injured and killed by Ukrainian attacks across its border in the past week. Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov claimed that in the Belgorod region, three people were hurt by a Proletarsky drone strike by Ukraine.

Putin is attempting to strengthen ties with North Korea and China with this diplomatic maneuver. His meeting with Kim Jong Un, who was also present at Xi Jinping’s grand military parade on Wednesday, highlighted Moscow’s growing partnership with Pyongyang.

Pete Wicks has admitted that his best pal, Sam Thompson, is “petrified” of his close friend, Olivia Attwood. The Love Island alum, 34, who was reportedly in the ‘dog house’ with her husband, Bradley Dack, after snuggling up to Pete, 36, in Ibiza recently, will be presenting a special edition of Loose Women & Men today with the best pals, who present a weekly podcast together.

Olivia, who cryptically took to Instagram today saying she will “talk about what’s been going on soon”, speaks highly of Pete and even joked that he was her ‘type’ during their Kiss FM show. However, Sam, 32, is said to be scared of the plucky presenter as Pete opened up about their relationship.

When asked if the Made In Chelsea star gets jealous of his close friendship with Olivia, Pete said: “He supports me in everything, but I do have to remind him that he’s still number one – even though that’s a lie! Also, it’s quite funny because he’s absolutely petrified of Liv.”

Olivia responded, saying, “I don’t think I’m scary!” We both act like d**heads, but unlike many others in this field, we only act like d***heads. We are actually alright.

The perky pair recently visited the White Island, and their tongues wagging as a result.

This Morning star Olivia was said to be ‘in the doghouse’ with her footballer hubby Bradley after the raucous get-away to Ibiza, in which Olivia and Pete were seen partying with their work mates and were papped at Ocean Beach and later on a yacht together.

Olivia was spotted stumbling close to Pete, who wrapped her arm around her while she relaxed out at sea while sporting a sizzling black bikini. After Bradley’s amused team-mates shared the photos on Gillingham’s WhatsApp group, Olivia’s husband of two years is said to have been left ‘livid’ by the photos.

Sam, Pete’s pal, posed a question about the drama in the most recent episode of their Staying Relevant podcast, and he responded with a remark. When Sam was questioned about what he believed would occur, TOWIE legend Pete responded, “Going to get off my t*ts”!

He continued, “Liv and I on work trips, what usually happens is we get to the airport early, and by the time we step onto the flight, we are intoxicated.”

Olivia, by contrast, has maintained an open letter to Pete, who calls him his “work wife.” She revealed to Pete in an episode of their radio show that he was her “type” before their trip to Spain. She is currently single and has split up with Maura Higgins earlier this year.

And she has now taken to Instagram with a cryptic message, sharing: “We can chat about what’s going on soon. I know you have questions, but just not this week, because if you haven’t noticed – I’m kinda busy.”

World Cup chance behind Townsend’s Scotland extension

Gregor Townsend says the desire to play in another Rugby World Cup led to his choice to stay in charge of Scotland until 2027.

There was rumor that the 52-year-old’s contract was about to expire in April of next year, and the Scot was a potential rugby director.

Townsend will remain in until the end of the next World Cup in Australia, according to Scottish Rugby, which was confirmed on Wednesday.

Townsend remarked, “Being Scotland’s head coach is a huge honor and true privilege.”

I’m “absolutely motivated to help the team fulfill its potential,” says I am excited to take on my country at another Rugby World Cup.

The progress the team has made has really boosted my confidence over the past few years. I’m eager to work with the squad once more to make this happen because there is a real belief in their ability to achieve extraordinary things.

And he is the longest-serving tier one coach in the world out of those still in place. He has won 94 Tests, including the epic 38-38 victory at Twickenham in 2019, losing 40, and drawing one.

Townsend’s 100th Test as Scotland coach will take place in Edinburgh in February’s second round of the Six Nations, facing England in the autumn series against the United States, New Zealand, Argentina, and Tonga.

In his time at the helm, he has won four Tests against Australia in five years, the first in Paris in 22 years, the first in Twickenham in 38, and four Calcutta Cups in a row for the first time since 1970.

Since Townsend took over, Scotland’s ability to play scintillating rugby has reappeared in the form of a significant increase in the number of Scots selected for British and Irish Lions tours.

Three, three, two, three, three, and two were Scotland’s initial squad numbers on the five pre-Townsend tours.

Eight Scots have been original picks on both Lions tours since Townsend’s as manager, with a number of others being called up throughout the tour, most notably under Andy Farrell in Australia this summer.

Those who want to change won’t be happy, according to analysis.

Townsend’s watch has improved for Scotland, but there isn’t anything tangible to support it. Despite this, there is definite support for an overhaul.

His critics have grown as he goes through his eight years, which are now set to become his ten.

Franco Smith’s arrival in the role would have delighted those Scotland fans who had been seeking change. That group of supporters feels like the team has stagnated under Townsend in recent years.

With just two third-place finishes in eight attempts and a fourth-place finish average, Scotland has never properly challenged for a Six Nations title despite the fine one-off victories.

There hasn’t been the depth of the squad or consistency to contend, despite the team’s remarkable number of sell-outs in its best days, which has led to the team’s enormously entertaining growth in its best days.

Townsend’s defeat by Fiji in Suva over the summer set them a new high of fifth in the world, but they are currently eighth.

Additionally, he has lost in two World Cups in a row, losing in Japan in 2019 and France in 2023.

Unquestionably, Townsend wants to stay on because it makes up for such disappointment. He will experience unfinished business because he has never been to the wire in the Six Nations and has never been a member of the Six Nations.

The six groups of four teams will participate in the World Cup draw in December, with the top six teams moving up each group.

Townsend is hopeful that he will do so for the first time as he attempts to leave a group.

When South Africa (the holders) and Ireland (the time the world number one) squared off in France in 2023, only the top two countries managed to qualify.

Scotland could not be landed with a similar pool of death in Australia, despite having the eight-man world ranking in the new 24-nation format.

With the two top nations, as well as the four top third-place teams in all categories, they would be placed second, making it to the last 16 knockouts.

That makes it more welcoming and appealing for Townsend than it does for Scotland.

Now that his future is secure, the autumnal planning begins, with the All Blacks playing the match on November 8.

Townsend has had two failed attempts at them as a coach, including an eight-point defeat in 2022 and five-point losses in 2017.

Man Utd in talks with Man City over England’s Park

Manchester City and Manchester United are reportedly in talks over moving for England midfielder Jess Park.

The 23-year-old made 20 appearances for England and made the Euro 2025 squad that won.

She impressed in a loan spell at Everton during the 2022-23 season and has spent eight years with Manchester City.

If City beat Brann in their two-legged play-off this month, Park has become a regular player for City, but they are looking to strengthen their squad as they prepare for a season in the main stage of the Women’s Champions League.

With a year left on her contract, there have also been reports of interest in Manchester United’s midfielder Grace Clinton, some of whom have also been linked with her.

There is currently no indication that England international Clinton will leave United before the 23:00 BST transfer deadline, but the club may need to take into account important offers if it’s still unlikely that she will agree to a contract extension.
