Why don’t Chelsea have a shirt sponsor?

Chelsea are the only Premier League club to start the 2025-26 season without a matchday shirt sponsor after Nottingham Forest agreed a partnership with American gambling firm Bally’s.

There is an ongoing competitive process for the front-of-shirt sponsor with Chelsea believed to have had offers, but focused on aligning with the right long-term partner.

The club is aiming to strike a deal worth £60m-£65m per season following qualification for the Champions League and winning the revamped Fifa Club World Cup.

New Saudi Arabia airline Riyadh Air have been strongly linked to a potential sponsorship.

Enzo Maresca’s side had no front-of-shirt sponsor last season until the end of April when they were sponsored by Dubai-based property company Damac.

What is happening with gambling sponsorship?

In the 2024-25 campaign, 11 top-flight teams had a gambling sponsor on their matchday shirt, an increase of three from the previous campaign.

None of the Premier League’s six wealthiest clubs – Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham – feature a gambling firm on the front of their shirts.

Premier League clubs also collectively agreed in 2023 to withdraw gambling sponsorship from the front of their kits by the end of the 2025-26 season.

They have been allowed to secure new shirt-front deals this season before the deadline, but will still be able to continue featuring gambling brands in areas such as shirt sleeves and LED advertising in the future.

Under-18s are not allowed to wear shirts with gambling sponsors, meaning young players have featured in games with sponsor-free jerseys.

The ban from next season follows a consultation between the league, its clubs and the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) as part of the government’s ongoing review of current gambling legislation.

Jeremy Clarkson divides opinions with cringy annual A-Level results day post

https://i2-prod.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/article35731994.ece/ALTERNATES/s615/0_F1-Grand-Prix-of-Bahrain.jpg

With many students left worried by their exam scores, Clarkson Farm’s Jeremy Clarkson has shared his annual A-Level results day post in the hope of easing their minds, but it’s left people divided

Jeremy Clarkson has stirred up a mix of reactions with his latest A-Level results day post, boasting about the helicopter landing pad he’s installing in his garden. The Top Gear legend shared his thoughts on social media just as students across England, Wales and Northern Ireland were receiving their A-Level results this morning.

While the pivotal day brings excitement for students ready to leave college and sixth-form behind, it also comes with high anxiety. Some students have been left gutted, not achieving the grades they hoped for, which can impact university placements and job prospects, overshadowing their dedication and study efforts.

Clarkson, known for his annual reassurance tweets on A Level and GCSE results days, isn’t bashful about his own lacklustre academic performance. Despite his poor exam results, the 65-year-old Amazon Prime star of Clarkson’s Farm often highlights how well things have worked out for him regardless.

In a tweet posted at 8.11am this morning [August 14], Jeremy quipped: “If your A level results are disappointing, don’t worry. I got a C and two Us and here I am today, installing lights for a helicopter landing pad in my garden.”

The tradition of Clarkson’s A-Level results day tweets goes back to 2014, providing a source of solace for many students facing the stress of the day.

Commenting on the post, one individual said: “Every year without fail this makes me laugh. “Been waiting for this,” another chimed in.

“Always love this time of year,” someone else remarked. One person commented: “Like clockwork! But good message! There are different types of talents and formal education doesn’t capture all.”

Yet some seem weary of hearing the same cringy annual post, while others pointed out that Jeremy didn’t exactly start from scratch.

His parents, Shirley and Eddie Clarkson, amassed a family fortune with their business, Gabrielle Designs, creators of the beloved Paddington Bear toys. This afforded Jeremy the privilege of private education.

“Same joke for about a decade now,” one commenter noted. Another quipped: “Hardly born into poverty in the first place, squire. you were never really going to struggle.”

Someone else highlighted: “Oh Jeremy I know you don’t know any different but that’s not how it works for most people. Luck is an element often underestimated.”

Another added: “Congratulations, Jeremy! But don’t forget that a helicopter represents academic excellence, just like your supercars do. Let’s encourage academic excellence, which gives society all the skills it needs to survive.”

One more observed: “It was a different time back then, but the moral of the story stands. The fact is, the majority of high achievers in school end up doing pretty average jobs making a tiny bit more than the average person but still having more debt.”

Clarkson’s post coincides with a record-breaking year for UK degree course acceptances, which have seen an increase of 3.1 per cent.

Liverpool Man Accused Of Football Parade Crash Faces 24 New Charges

A British man accused of driving his vehicle into crowds celebrating Liverpool’s Premier League title win faces an additional 24 criminal charges, prosecutors revealed Thursday at his latest court hearing.

Former British Marine Paul Doyle, 53, appeared tearful as he joined the hearing at Liverpool Crown Court via videolink from prison, when details of the new counts stemming from the May 26 incident emerged.

Merseyside Police now say 134 people were injured when Doyle allegedly drove his Ford Galaxy Titanium into crowds who were leaving Liverpool’s waterfront after a victory parade.

The 31 charges in total now filed involve 29 victims, aged between six months and 77, the court heard.

Six relate to children, including two babies — one aged six months at the time and one aged seven months — who were injured when the car hit people massed on Water Street in the city centre.

Supporters of the city’s world-famous football team had thronged its streets to celebrate the club’s record-equalling 20th English top-flight title when scenes of joy turned to horror.

Doyle, a father-of-three from the Croxteth neighbourhood in the city, was initially charged with seven offences, including dangerous driving and causing grievous bodily harm with intent.

He now faces multiple additional counts under that and other charges, including 19 for attempting to cause grievous bodily harm, three of wounding with intent, and one of affray.

Doyle, wearing a grey T-shirt, did not enter any pleas during the 20-minute hearing, which several relatives of the victims and more than 20 members of the media attended.

Judge Andrew Menary adjourned the case until September 4, when Doyle is expected to enter pleas.

Earlier this year, a provisional trial date was fixed for November 24, with the case expected to last three to four weeks.

NBA Approves $6.1bn Sale Of Boston Celtics

The NBA on Wednesday approved the sale of the Boston Celtics to an investment group led by Bill Chisholm, five months after the deal worth a then-record $6.1 billion was agreed.

“The NBA Board of Governors has unanimously approved the sale of the controlling interests in the Boston Celtics to an investor group led by Bill Chisholm,” the league said in a brief statement.

“The transaction is expected to close shortly.”

Chisholm is the managing director and co-founder of Symphony Technology Group. When he and his co-investors agreed to purchase the storied Celtics franchise “at an initial valuation of $6.1 billion,” that was the highest ever offered for a North American sports team.

It has since been surpassed by the $10 billion sale, in June, of the Los Angeles Lakers by the Buss family to billionaire Mark Walter.

When the Celtics’ sale was announced, it was stated that Wyc Grousbeck would continue in his roles of chief executive officer and governor, overseeing team operations through the 2027-28 season.

The Grousbeck family and Steve Pagliuca purchased the Celtics for $360 million in 2002.

But US media reported this week that Chisholm — a Massachusetts native who calls himself a “die-hard Celtics fan” — will assume the role of governor because under the terms of the deal, Grousbeck will no longer have the required 15% ownership stake the league requires to hold that role.

Nevertheless, ESPN reported that Chisholm and Grousbeck “plan to run the team together as originally planned.”

The Celtics are one of the most storied in the NBA’s history, with a record 18 championships, the most recent in 2024.

Wissa to miss Brentford opener – Andrews

Brentford forward Yoane Wissa will not play in their Premier League opener at Nottingham Forest on Sunday, says Bees manager Keith Andrews.

Andrews has made the decision amid doubts about Wissa’s his future at the club, with Newcastle United having had an offer worth £25 plus £5m in add-ons for the 28-year-old rejected.

Brentford value the DR Congo international at more than the bid from the Magpies, although Wissa is keen to move to a club that can offer him Champions League football.

Wissa left the club’s pre-season base in Portugal in July following Newcastle’s offer and threatened not to play for the Bees again if he was not allowed to move to St James’ Park.

He only returned to first-team training earlier this month following talks with Andrews.

“I have made a decision he is not [available],” said Andrews, whose side face Forest at 14:00 BST on Sunday.

Wissa, who joined Brentford in August 2021 from Lorient, scored 19 Premier League goals last season as he helped the Bees finish 10th in the top flight.

“[I’m] very clear on the situation. As a head coach, I want Yoane in the building, to be a part of the first-team and the squad. I see that moving forwards but I am very understanding of his situation,” added Andrews.

“I have a very good relationship with him, and that will persist, but we have to focus on the players who are ready to play and perform on Sunday and I don’t think Yoane’s in that space.

“For Yoane on Sunday, he won’t be involved.”

Andrews took over at Brentford this summer following the departure of former boss Thomas Frank to Tottenham.

The Bees have lost forward Bryan Mbeumo to Manchester United, midfielder Christian Norgaard to Arsenal and keeper Mark Flekken to Bayer Leverkusen.

Their signings include England midfielder Jordan Henderson, Republic of Ireland keeper Caoimhin Kelleher and Dutch attacking midfielder Antoni Milambo.

“The only one who really disrupts an ideal preparation is the Yoane Wissa situation,” added Andrews.

“It is ideal? No, it’s not.
