Fern Britton rose to fame after appearing on This Morning, but it was in a look back to her 20s that she revealed an incident at a Royal event attended by King Charles

Former This Morning star Fern Britton has said that she received a punch to the kidney from one of the King’s protection officers when she met the monarch during her teenage years.

In the early 2000s, she shot to fame after co-hosting This Morning alongside Phillip Schofield, but she has recently looked back to her younger days when she was trying to find her feet as an actor.

In a chat with Tim Lihoreau on the Guess Who’s Coming To Dinner? podcast, the 68-year-old revealed how she used to write letters to the then Prince of Wales asking if he could attend any of her shows.

While she admitted that she would always receive a response, it wasn’t until her 20s that she finally got the opportunity to meet the monarch while he was attending a money-raising event at Salisbury Cathedral.

But her once-in-a-lifetime moment didn’t go exactly according to plan after she claimed that she received a blow to the kidney as she approached His Highness: “There was one time when I did get a sort of kidney punch from one of his (King Charles’) protection officers, because I was getting a bit too close with a microphone when he went to Salisbury, because he was raising money for the Salisbury Cathedral spire to be refixed.”

And sharing more details on how the alleged incident unfolded, she explained: “I had a beautiful suit on and I was looking good.”

She continued: “I was in my early to mid-20s, and getting closer and closer and closer just to hear what he was saying to the crowd.”

The monarch then apparently glanced at one of his protection officers, and shortly after, she was struck. However, she admitted that she doesn’t think it was meant to be “that hard.”

Leaving her career in acting behind after leaving The Cambridge Theatre Company, she took her first steps into broadcasting in the 1980s when she took a local TV role in Plymouth.

While successfully landing a number of roles since then, it was in the 1990s that her career began to reach new heights.

In 1994, she was announced as presenter of Ready Steady Cook, but left the show shortly after becoming a full-time presenter on ITV’s This Morning, where she co-hosted until 2009.

At least 37 killed after torrential rains trigger flash floods in Kashmir

At least 37 people have been killed after a sudden cloudburst unleashed torrential rain in Indian-administered Kashmir, a disaster management official said, marking the second major disaster in the Himalayas in just over a week.

The deluge struck Chisoti, a town in Kishtwar district, on Thursday morning. The site serves as a key stop along the pilgrimage route to the Machail Mata temple, a revered Himalayan shrine dedicated to Goddess Durga.

Television footage showed terrified pilgrims crying as water surged through the settlement.

Omar Abdullah, chief minister of the federal territory of Jammu and Kashmir, described the situation as “grim” and said confirmed details were slow to emerge from the remote location.

Mohammed Irshad said rescue teams scouring the devastated Himalayan village of Chositi brought at least 100 people to safety.

“Dead bodies of 37 people have been recovered,” said Irshad, a top disaster management official, adding there was no count of any missing people available.

According to Ramesh Kumar, divisional commissioner of Kishtwar, the cloudburst hit at about 11:30am local time. He told ANI news agency that police and disaster response teams were on the ground, while army and air force units had also been mobilised. “Search and rescue operations are under way,” Kumar said.

An official, who asked not to be named as they were not authorised to speak to the media, said the flood swept away a community kitchen and a security post set up to serve pilgrims. “A large number of pilgrims had gathered for lunch and they were washed away,” the official told the news agency Reuters.

The India Meteorological Department defines a cloudburst as a sudden, extreme downpour exceeding 100mm of rain in an hour, often triggering flash floods and landslides in mountainous regions during the monsoon.

Last week, a similar disaster in Uttarakhand, another Himalayan state, buried an entire village under mud and debris after heavy rains.

Sinner, Sabalenka Sail Into Cincinnati Quarter-Finals

Defending champions Jannik Sinner and Aryna Sabalenka booked quarter-final berths at the rain-hit ATP-WTA Cincinnati Open on Wednesday with straight-set wins.

Sinner shrugged off a mid-match rain interruption lasting nearly three hours as he advanced with a 6-4, 7-6 (7/4) victory over Adrian Mannarino.

He next faces Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime, who beat Benjamin Bonzi of France 6-4, 6-3.

Sabalenka, taken to three sets in her previous match with Emma Raducanu, defeated Spain’s Jessica Bouzas Maneiro 6-1, 7-5, winning a season-leading 50th match of 2025 and reaching her 29th career last-eight at the elite 1000 level.

Sabalenka had to work after surrendering a second-set break, but she broke Bouzas Maneiro in the final game to seal the victory.

“The key was to focus and put as much pressure as possible on her serve,” Sabalenka said. “I was up a break, made a couple of mistakes and she broke me back.

“I’m glad to win in straight sets – I didn’t want to stay for three hours.”

World number one Sinner, playing his first tournament since lifting the trophy at Wimbledon, notched his 24th consecutive hardcourt match win to gain his fifth quarter-final of the season.

The victory required patience, with the Italian who turns 24 on Saturday passing some of the afternoon weather pause by playing cards with his team.

Sinner had won the first set and they were on serve in the second when they returned, but the Frenchman’s tricky game took a toll as Sinner was broken while trying to serve out the match.

The second set instead went to a tiebreak, with the Italian firing his 11th and 12th aces to clinch victory.

“He’s a very difficult opponent, different from the other payers,” Sinner said. “He can read the opponent well.

“It was a struggle to close it out, but I’m happy to be in the quarter-finals.”

Earlier former champion Alexander Zverev polished off a weather-hit third-round victory, winning the final four points of a 6-4, 6-4 win over Brandon Nakashima.

The entire one-game exercise, with 2021 Cincy winner Zverev leading 6-4, 5-4 when play resumed, took less than two minutes, with the third seed set for a later fourth-round encounter against Toronto finalist Karen Khachanov.

Fifth seed Ben Shelton, last week’s Toronto winner, reached the fourth round with a 7-6 (7/3), 6-3, victory over Roberto Bautista Agut in a match rescheduled from Tuesday.

Women’s third seed Iga Swiatek and men’s seventh seed Holger Rune both booked quarter-final berths before afternoon showers struck.

Wimbledon champion Swiatek beat Sorana Cirstea 6-4, 6-3, overcoming 33 unforced errors in a 95-minute victory.

“I wanted to be more solid than in my last match,” Swiatek said. “I’m happy with the level of my focus and the consistency.”

Rune advanced as 2024 finalist Frances Tiafoe retired with lower back pain with Denmark’s Rune up 6-4, 3-1.

The match was a re-run of a quarter-final here a year ago, won by the American who went on to fall to Sinner in the final.

Tiafoe received treatment on his back but it didn’t seem to help as Rune gained control.

The American walked dejectedly off court, carrying only a pair of shoes while an official carted away his massive tennis bag.

Rune, bothered this season by his own injury worries, secured his 100th career hard-court win and his first defeat of a top 20 opponent since he beat Carlos Alcaraz in the Barcelona final in April.

In another match interrupted on Tuesday, Magda Linette reached the fourth round at Cincinnati for the first time with a 7-6 (7/5), 3-6, 6-3 upset of fourth-seeded American Jessica Pegula.

India defeats were not ‘reality check’ – Edwards

England’s T20 and one-day international series defeats by India were not a “reality check” before next month’s 50-over World Cup, says head coach Charlotte Edwards.

After thrashing a depleted West Indies at the beginning of the summer in her first series in charge, England lost the T20s 3-2 and the ODIs 2-1 to India – who are hosting the World Cup alongside Sri Lanka.

England were without experienced batter Heather Knight, while captain Nat Sciver-Brunt missed the last two T20s with injury, but there was again scrutiny over the team’s fielding and ability to perform under pressure.

“We were massively challenged and that’s how we want women’s cricket to be,” Edwards told the BBC Stumped podcast.

“It wasn’t a reality check. We know we can beat India.

“We are going into a World Cup where we know if we play our best, we can beat any team.”

In the eight-team tournament, which runs from 30 September to 2 November, each side play each other once, with the top four qualifying for the semi-finals.

‘Confident’ England can be strong fielding side

Edwards replaced former coach Jon Lewis in April, who was sacked after England’s disastrous 16-0 Ashes sweep at the beginning of the year and the preceding T20 World Cup, where they were knocked out in the group stages by West Indies.

Former England captain Edwards vowed to change the team’s perception and attitude, with much of the post-Ashes criticism focusing on a sense of complacency, inability to handle scrutiny and a culture of freedom that appeared to let standards slip, particularly in the field and with their fitness.

“It is something we are working on, we know we have that tag now,” she said.

“Sometimes I get frustrated because we can drop one catch and we are labelled a bad fielding team, even though we have fielded really well otherwise.

Sciver-Brunt & Ecclestone show good progress

All-rounder Sciver-Brunt replaced Knight as captain after the Ashes, but has had injury setbacks – an Achilles problem ruled her out of bowling all summer, while she suffered a groin issue in the India T20s.

Edwards says Sciver-Brunt is “on track” to be bowling in time for the World Cup, with England’s first game against South Africa on 3 October, which will help balance the side – they often seemed a batter light during the summer.

“Nat is crucial but we are not putting pressure on her,” added Edwards.

“We have got to get her right as a batter and a captain. She has had a lot thrown at her this summer and she has dealt with that so calmly.”

Another player who will be key to England’s World Cup campaign is left-arm spinner and world number one bowler Sophie Ecclestone, who was in the spotlight during the Ashes.

Ecclestone refused a television interview with pundit and former team-mate Alex Hartley, which managing director of England women’s cricket Clare Connor described as “an unfortunate incident”.

She was left out of Edwards’ squad for the West Indies series, which England said was to manage an injury, and during the ODIs against India, Ecclestone admitted she had considered stepping away from the game.

But Edwards said the 26-year-old was now in “a really good place”.

Trainer Turner dies after ‘freak’ accident

Former jockey Bill Turner has died at the age of 78 following a “freak accident” earlier this week, his daughter has announced.

Turner, who was based in Sigwells in Somerset, reportedly fractured his skull in a fall on Monday. He was hospitalised but died earlier.

The horse trainer became synonymous with the Brocklesby Stakes at Doncaster, having won the traditional first race of the Flat turf season six times.

Ms Turner was told of her father’s death while travelling to Chepstow racecourse.

She told Sky Sports Racing: “We got the call in the lorry, I’d made the decision to come here, the horse [Red Snapper] was to run in dad’s name in his honour, whatever had happened he would have wanted that.

“He wasn’t just my dad and my sister’s dad and Ryan’s grandfather, he was everyone’s dad and the people who he has helped in their careers saw him as a dad.

“He would have preferred to have been going flat out up the gallops but unfortunately it was a freak accident.

“I still can’t get round that this injury has done this to him, as I’ve pulled him out from such serious injuries on the gallops.”

Coleen Rooney puts detective skills to use as she makes brutal swipe at Arsenal in TV ad

Coleen Rooney has put her detective skills to use for a brand new job after her the clever way in which disclosed that Rebekah Vardy’s Instagram account was behind her leaked private information

Wagatha Christie star Coleen Rooney has landed a new job thanks to her cunning detective skills. The businesswoman is no stranger when it comes to figuring out the truth and her latest move has also seen her take a swipe at Arsenal.

Now, the 39-year-old is using her investigative skills once again – after she uncovered while trying to work out who was leaking private information from her social media to the public. Liverpudlian Coleen is starring in a new TV advert for Paddy Power in which she takes on a role working in Justice Refund, which sees her heading up a mock Investigation Department, taking on a wide variety of made-up cases.

One part of her new role sees her look in the viral catchphrase “nothing beats a Jet2 holiday” and the “latest referring conspiracy theories” by dozens of Arsenal fans, with one claiming that the “footballs are out to get” the players. It comes after David Beckham speaks ‘as a father’ in ‘family’ announcement after latest Brooklyn snub.

But Coleen believes the dozens of fans are actually one person, putting on fake voices for the phone call complaints. The Justice Refund will see Irish bookmaker Paddy Power give cash back to those who backed Manchester City in the Premier League since 2011, despite a verdict on their alleged 114 FFP breaches still to be decided.

Paddy Power’s Justice Refund covers eight seasons and will see Manchester United, Arsenal and Liverpool fans come out on top. Over 100,000 punters had backed Manchester United to win the league in 2011/12, 2017/18 and 2020/21. Meanwhile, Liverpool were backed in 2013/14 and 2021/22, while Arsenal were backed in 2022/23 and 2023/24 – they will all have their stakes returned, despite the verdict surrounding City’s 115 financial charges to be decided.

City had been hit with the 115 charges over alleged breaches of Financial Fair Play in February, but this later rose to 130. Reflecting on the City investigation, Coleen said: “As the investigation is still ongoing, we can’t be sure that Man City have broken FFP rules.

“The uncertainty isn’t fair on fans and leaves only one reasonable cause of action. Paddy Power should just be sound and do the biggest Justice Refund of all time.”

“I’ve spoken to the airline and they said Nancy sang ‘Hey Soul Sister’, three times in a row,” after a Jet2 passenger claimed she was “booed off the stage” during karaoke, adding she “didn’t have a leg to stand on.”

Reflecting on the Arsenal allegations, Coleen added: “I’ve listened to the audio on those Arsenal complaints. It’s the lads from Arsenal Fan TV, putting on a different voice each time. You know, like in Mrs. Doubtfire.”

She added: “I’m looking at the data and you are correct, your team has been last on Match of the Day more than anyone else. No, I don’t think it’s a conspiracy, you’re just not very good.” She later added: “I’m looking at the phone votes here and it seems suspicious.

“A lad from McFly winning I’m A Celeb? Doesn’t seem realistic does it? You just called in to say how well VAR is being run and referees deserve more credit? That’s lovely, can I get your name? Howard Wobb? Great, let me just make a note of that, Mr. Wobb,” as she became suspicious.

Speaking of the new role, Coleen said: “Fans invest so much into football, emotionally and financially, and sometimes it feels like they don’t get much back. This was a fun way to shine a light on that, whilst actually giving something back to the people who make the game what it is.”
