Liverpool paid an emotional tribute to the late Diogo Jota and Andre Silva at Anfield in their opening Premier League game of the new season against Bournemouth on Friday night.
With Jota’s family expected to be in attendance, a rousing rendition of ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ was followed by a period of silence as a fan-led mosaic in the Kop and Sir Kenny Dalglish stand were held up to read ‘DJ20’ and ‘AS30’.
Liverpool forward Jota died at the age of 28 in a car crash in northern Spain in July, alongside his brother Andre Silva, 25.
After scoring in Liverpool’s 4-2 win, Mohamed Salah was in tears at full-time as Jota’s song reverberated around Anfield.
In his match programme notes, Liverpool boss Arne Slot said: “We know that this will be a very emotional occasion, given it is the first league game we have played since we lost Diogo and Andre.
“As I have said previously, the tributes that have been paid throughout the football world, and especially within the LFC community, have been truly special, and I know that tonight we will come together to honour them once more.
“It is important that, as a club, we show that they [Jota’s family] will always have our love and support as they deal with this most tragic of situations. We are there for them always.”
A moment of silence will be held at all Premier League matches this weekend, with players wearing black armbands, while messages and images will be shown on the big screens in stadiums.
Liverpool’s players will display their own tribute with a ‘Forever 20’ emblem printed on their shirts and stadium jackets. This will remain in place for the season.
The Reds won a record-equalling 20th English top-flight title last season with Jota wearing the number 20 shirt, which the club decided to retire after consulting with the former Portugal international’s wife Rute Cardoso and family members.
Defending champion Aryna Sabalenka fell to a 6-1 6-4 defeat by Elena Rybakina in the quarter-finals of the Cincinnati Open.
The Kazakh dominated the opening set and racked up 11 aces against the world number one before sealing her victory in 74 minutes.
“I’m happy with the serve. It was the key today,” Rybakina said.
“I served really well. If she had been serving well it would have been a totally different match. It was also intense from the baseline. I just hope to continue like this.”
Rybakina, the 2022 Wimbledon winner, will now face this year’s All England Club champion in the last four – as Iga Swiatek beat Anna Kalinskaya 6-3 6-4.
Poland’s Swiatek, ranked third in the world, was always in charge against the Russian, who appeared hampered by a calf problem and saved four match points in the penultimate game.
However, Swiatek prevailed to move into her fourth WTA 1,000-level semi-final of the season.
Blu Chegini has responded to backlash following his time on the latest series of Love Island as it hasn’t stopped him from wanting to return for the All Stars series

Love Island star Blu Chegini has insisted he is not a “woman hater” as he hits back at claims from his time in the villa. During his time on the ITV2 dating show, he ruffled feathers with his behaviour.
He turned up as an original star on the latest series and was initially coupled up with Alima. The pair quickly established they were in a friendship couple, and Blu made a beeline for Shakira, even sharing a kiss in the hideaway.
However, days into the series, he was dumped in dramatic scenes when he had to go head-to-head with Shea. It comes after one huge TV star looks completely unrecognisable as she reveals latest facelift

Blu’s Love Island journey wasn’t over, though, as he strolled back into the villa last month. He attracted backlash during his time on the show due to how he acted towards Alima.
Having said he wasn’t interested in her because she was not his “type,” Blu was labelled dismissive and even racist by some viewers. He later addressed the claims, stating he didn’t have a type and his comment was misinterpreted.

Now, Blu has hit back again as he said: “I am not a woman hater. I was paired up with Alima. I didn’t see a connection with her. I’m now being called a racist because she is a black girl.
He added: “I got backlash for saying Alima wasn’t my type, I wasn’t her type either. She didn’t get backlash.” Blu continued: “Maya Jama was cold towards me because I was opinionated, or maybe the whole Alima controversy has turned her off me.
“I am now working on communication, personal development. I was angry in the show, I struggle with English as I was schooled in Spain.” Blu went on to insist: “I love women, I have respect for women. I couldn’t play the villain card; it’s not in my nature.
“If I could have chosen other girls in the first four days, it would have been Meg, Megan or Shakira.” Speaking of the other girls to Simon Gross on Get Gossy With Grossy, he explained: “I don’t have a connection with Helena.
“Gabby is my type. We might go on a date.” Blu explained that he wouldn’t say no to appearing on Love Island All Stars as previous contestants head to the South African villa for a second chance at finding love.
“I would do All Stars if I was still single but it be my third or fourth time. I can’t do what Casey [O’Gorman] did. We will see.” Blu said of the Islanders’ decision at the time of his dumping: “We asked them for their point of view as we were both really stubborn in that situation. We weren’t going to budge, so we had to get them to make the decision.

“I felt like I had a stronger bond with everyone in there, obviously, I’d been there a bit longer. I was constantly trying to make a connection and exploring everyone. I was making moves as quickly as I could, as opposed to Shea, who was a bit more laid back.
“Everyone had their own thoughts. But listen, someone’s got to go at the end of the day. The way it went was better than I thought it would have gone; I had some nice things said about me, and that meant a lot to me.”

Peter Andre turned into a real-life superhero when he saved his son Theo from being trapped in a toilet cubicle. The Mysterious Girl singer, 52, who shares eight-year-old Theo with wife Emily, along with daughters Amelia and Arabella, was forced to spring into action during their family holiday in Cyprus.
Peter also has a son, Junior, and a daughter, Princess, from his previous marriage to Katie Price, with whom he is currently at odds.
The drama unfolded while the family were enjoying a visit to Camel Park in Mazotos. Young Theo found himself locked inside a public loo, prompting his dad to take swift action. It comes after Princess Andre says she’s ‘independent’ from parents as she breaks silence after Katie Price row.

In true heroic fashion, Peter clambered up the side of the toilet block and managed to squeeze through an open window at the back. He shared the entire incident on Instagram, narrating the situation whilst sporting a pair of flip-flops.
In the video, he explained: “Right guys, we have a bit of a situation here because these are the toilets. This is the door, it’s completely locked from the inside and the outside, and someone can’t get out.”

He then showed Theo, whose face was blurred for privacy, stuck inside the toilet wearing a T-shirt and shorts. The youngster exclaimed: “It’s boiling in here!”.
Thankfully, Peter was able to get inside the toilet facility and rescue Theo by passing him through the gap. Addressing the crowd, he said: “Ladies and gentlemen there’s always ways to get out of these situations, be careful.”

However, the pop star found himself in a bit of a pickle as he struggled to climb back out of the window. One of his children couldn’t resist teasing him, shouting: “You’re embarrassing us dad!”
The Australian singer turned reality star wasn’t stuck for long and freed himself from the predicament. He clearly found the humour in the situation, writing alongside the clip: “Saved the day and I’m still embarrassing.”
Supporters were quick to praise him, with one posting: “In all seriousness, well done superhero dad [clapping emoji].” Another added: “Good on you, Pete.”

It comes after Peter took to social media to address comments made by his former wife, Katie. In a statement shared on his Instagram, he said: “For sixteen years, I have stayed silent in the face of repeated lies from my ex-wife and her family, out of respect for my children and loved ones, but staying silent has been incredibly frustrating. That ends today.
“The latest comments about my children’s welfare and living arrangements compel me to set the record straight. For well-documented reasons, Junior and Princess came into my care in 2018 and remained with me until they reached adulthood.”

Peter went on to add: “Unfortunately, there are many more lies and baseless accusations I have yet to address. Those will now be dealt with in the coming months.”
Following Peter’s post, a spokesperson for Katie told the Mirror: “Kate is in a much better and clear headspace and is at peace with the situation, this was in the past and she doesn’t feel the need to bring up tit for tat comments, but more importantly she’s dealing with this the right way and it’s now in her lawyers hands. Kate will no longer be gaslight and bullied as she once was…”
