Messi Returns From Injury, Scores Late To Seal Inter Miami Win Over Galaxy

Lionel Messi returned from injury as a reserve and scored in the 84th minute to spark Inter Miami over the defending MLS champion Los Angeles Galaxy 3-1 on Saturday.

The iconic 38-year-old Argentine striker was back on the field for Miami after suffering what Inter coach Javier Mascherano had called a “minor muscle injury” — an apparent hamstring strain — in Inter’s August 2 Leagues Cup victory over Mexican side Necaxa.

“It had been something very small,” Mascherano said of his injury after the match. “The three training sessions we had were good. The important thing is that the match ended. As the minutes went by, I saw him better. We have to see how he feels tomorrow.”

Eight-time Ballon d’Or winner Messi, who missed a Leagues Cup win over Pumas UNAM and last weekend’s MLS loss at Orlando City, was on the bench as a reserve before entering in the second half, replacing Telasco Segovia.

“We had planned the match to give minutes to Leo. The idea was to give him 45 minutes so that he can find sensations,” Mascherano said. “I didn’t see him after the game. Tomorrow we’ll see what feelings he had.

“He’s an extraordinary player. I saw that he was clearly not 100 percent comfortable but as the minutes went by he was loosening up more and more. We will have to see how he ended with the fatigue.”

Jordi Alba scored for Miami in the 43rd minute but Joseph Paintsil equalized for the Galaxy in the 59th minute.

Messi scored in the 84th and Luis Suarez added an insurance tally in the 89th off an assist from Messi to produce the final victory margin.

Messi, the reigning MLS Most Valuable Player, has 19 goals and 10 assists in 19 MLS appearances for Miami this season.

He also has the Herons into the quarter-finals of the Leagues Cup, which they won in 2023 just after Messi’s arrival. Miami will play Tigres in a Cup quarter-final on Wednesday.

“He wants to play every single game,” Mascherano said. “You have to understand why Leo is Leo. He always wants to be on the pitch. He’s happy there. Sometimes we try to explain him that we have to go slowly but when he feels good he knows himself like no one. In the end we tried to give him some minutes today to start having good feelings for Wednesday.”

Inter Miami rank fourth in the MLS Eastern Conference, six points behind MLS leaders Philadelphia but with three matches in hand.

South Korean international and former Tottenham Hotspur striker Son Heung-min picked up his first MLS victory in his first MLS start as LAFC won 2-0 at New England.

Son, who helped LAFC take a draw in Chicago last week as a reserve in his league debut, assisted on the LAFC win-clinching goal by Mathieu Choiniere in the fourth minute of second half stoppage time.

Marco Delgado scored LAFC’s first goal in the 51st minute.

LAFC rank fifth in the Western Conference, nine points adrift of pace-setting San Diego with two matches in hand.

Prince Andrew’s old flame is launching her own wellness brand in a bid to become the next Gwyneth Paltrow. Koo Stark has applied to the UK government’s Intellectual Property Office to trademark a business that will sell products from crystal therapies to tarot card readings.

The 69-year-old also aims to market Koo Stark yoni eggs – stones used by women as a sex aid. Gwyneth markets her own version, a Jade Egg, for almost £50 on her Goop wellness site. Cancer survivor Koo, who dated Andrew for 18 months in the early 1980s, will also offer “therapeutic treatment of the body, meditation services, yoga, spiritual advice, aura photography and meditation training” as well as cosmetics.

The actress and photographer’s application has been filed under ‘Kathleen Norris Stark trading as Koo Stark’. Koo’s controversial relationship with Andrew began after they met at a party in February 1981.

The Prince was said to have considered proposing but the relationship faced intense pressure from the Royal Family because of Koo’s past acting roles in movies such as Electric Dreams, Marquis de Sade’s Justine and Eat The Rich. The couple split in 1983.

Earlier this year, Koo filed a lawsuit against Star Wars producers for £190million. She played Luke Skywalker’s friend Camie Marstrap in the 1977 movie A New Hope, but her scenes were cut.

However, they recently appeared online so Koo claims her intellectual property rights have been exploited. The news comes just one week after claims that Andrew “slept with more than a dozen women” in the first year of his marriage to Sarah Ferguson.

The biography of the Duke and Duchess of York by historian Andrew Lownie – The Rise and Fall of the House of York – alleges Fergie wanted to be “The One” but enjoyed several affairs of her own with “reckless abandon”.

Lownie, who has written several acclaimed books on the royal family, details claims the York’s troubled marriage was riddled with infidelity.

Andrew, who was forced to step down from royal duties over his relationship with convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein, allegedly told his new wife early on: “I am a prince, then a naval officer, then a husband.”

Lownie claims a former driver who worked for the couple has stated that Andrew slept with more than 12 women before they reached their first wedding anniversary. The author also alleges Andrew has slept with more than 1,000 women in his life.

Lownie says the list includes adult film stars, political figures, and nightclub staff and bartenders. One 20-year-old model alleged: “He wanted me to engage in kinky sexual activity. He had no boundaries.

“He told me he had an open marriage arrangement with his wife. I felt like he used me for a few days, so he could live his wildest fantasies.”

Global XV to watch out for at 2025 World Cup

England’s star-studded squad are favourites to lift the Women’s Rugby World Cup trophy in September.

Ireland, Wales and Scotland also have top talent looking to shine at the tournament which will see games played at eight venues across England.

But outside the home nations, who should you watch out for?

Prop – Hope Rogers (United States)

The United States front-row forward has been a standout performer for Exeter Chiefs in the Premiership Women’s Rugby (PWR), winning a place in the league’s team of the year for the past two seasons.

Hooker – Katalina Amosa (Australia)

The 23-year-old only made her Test debut in May against Fiji but has gone on to start four of Australia’s past five Tests, bagging a try in a defeat by Wales.

Two of those starts came against World Cup contenders New Zealand and Canada to mark an incredible rise for the dynamic Amosa, who only made her debut in Super Rugby – featuring four teams from Australia and one from Fiji – last year.

Prop – DaLeaka Menin (Canada)

The 30-year-old is another one of Exeter’s destructive props, having joined the side in 2021.

Menin is a key player for World Cup-chasing Canada and was the player of the match in a victory over world champions New Zealand last year.

Lock – Manae Feleu (France)

The all-action lock made four breakdown turnovers and stole two line-outs during this year’s Women’s Six Nations.

The 25-year-old, who is the France co-captain, also made the second-most offloads (eight).

Lock – Michaela Leonard (Australia)

The 30-year-old played at the last World Cup for Australia and has captained the side previously.

England face the Wallaroos on 6 September and Leonard will be aiming to disrupt the Red Roses’ formidable line-out.

Flanker – Sophie de Goede (Canada)

The 26-year-old captained Canada to the semi-finals of the World Cup in 2022 and is one of the stars of the PWR.

The Saracens back rower, known for her barnstorming carries, returned to action last month after recovering from the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury she suffered in June 2024.

Flanker – Kennedy Tukuafu (New Zealand)

Tukuafu co-captained New Zealand to World Cup glory over England in 2022 and will be aiming to again lift the trophy.

A typical open-side flanker who is sharp over the ball, the 28-year-old also enjoys carrying hard in the wider channels.

Number eight – Aseza Hele (South Africa)

Hele has gone from strength-to-strength following her selection for the World Cup in 2022 after only five caps.

Despite her side losing all three games three years ago, the 30-year-old caught the eye of Harlequins, who signed the big ball carrier in 2023.

Scrum-half – Pauline Bourdon Sansus (France)

Arguably the best scrum-half in the world, Bourdon Sansus continues to produce magical moments.

A long-range drop-goal was part of an exceptional all-round player-of-the-match performance against Scotland in this year’s Six Nations.

Fly-half – Ruahei Demant (New Zealand)

The fly-half co-captained the Black Ferns to the World Cup title in 2022, before winning World Rugby women’s player of the year.

The 30-year-old has experience on the biggest stage and produced a player-of-the-match performance in that final win over England in 2022.

Wing – Kelly Arbey (France)

A wonderful individual score against England in this year’s Six Nations showed the 20-year-old can perform against the world’s best.

It is not just her rapid pace and finishing ability that is a threat, Arbey has a wonderful offloading game, with a speculator one-handed effort setting up a try for Seraphine Okemba against Scotland.

Centre – Alex Tessier (Canada)

Another one of Exeter’s foreign imports, Tessier is comfortable at both fly-half and inside centre.

The 2024 World Rugby women’s player of the year nominee will captain Canada at the tournament, which shows her value in a squad that contains former skipper De Goede.

Centre – Ilona Maher (United States)

To play this video you need to enable JavaScript in your browser.

Ilona Maher has more than eight million followers on social media, the most of any rugby union player in the world.

The 29-year-old spent three months at Bristol Bears earlier this year, scoring four tries in a successful stint as attendances skyrocketed in the PWR.

A first USA XVs cap since 2021 followed against New Zealand in May, with Maher using her powerful frame from outside centre.

Wing – Portia Woodman-Wickliffe (New Zealand)

Considered the greatest in the history of women’s rugby, Woodman-Wickliffe has scored a record 20 World Cup tries and helped New Zealand become world champions in 2017 and 2022.

In April, the 34-year-old opted to come out of international retirement after stepping away following last summer’s Olympics.

Full-back – Claudia Pena (Spain)

The full-back scored Spain’s only try in a 97-7 World Cup warm-up hammering by England.

However, the 20-year-old was a bright spark in the game and scored eight tries in an impressive debut season for Harlequins.

British racing to hold one-day strike in betting tax protest

Getty Images

British horse racing will go on strike on 10 September, taking the unprecedented action of refusing to race in protest against the Government’s proposed tax rise on betting on the sport.

As part of its industry-wide Axe The Racing Tax campaign, four fixtures scheduled for that day at Lingfield Park, Carlisle, Uttoxeter and Kempton Park have been rearranged by the British Horseracing Authority.

It is the first time the sport has voluntarily refused to race in its modern history.

The governing body is campaigning against the Treasury’s proposal to introduce a single remote gambling tax, which would increase the 15% tax rate paid by bookmakers on racing and aligning it with online gaming, which is currently taxed at 21%.

The BHA says this would have a “destructive impact” on the industry with its economic analysis predicting an estimated £330m loss in revenue and putting 2,752 jobs at risk in the first year alone.

BBC Sport has contacted the Treasury for comment.

Chancellor of the exchequer Rachel Reeves’s autumn budget in October is expected to bring tax rises.

Brant Dunshea, chief executive at the British Horseracing Authority, said the proposals “threaten the very future” of the sport.

Race meetings in Britain take place 363 days a year, unless called off for adverse weather, equine virus outbreaks and national crises such as the Covid-19 pandemic.

The strike takes place the day before the start of the four-day St Leger festival at Doncaster Racecourse.

“British Racing is already in a precarious financial position and research has shown that a tax rise on racing could be catastrophic for the sport and the thousands of jobs that rely on it in towns and communities across the country,” added Dunshea.

The cancelled fixtures have been rearranged for:

In addition, the evening fixture at Kempton Park on 15 September has been moved to the evening of 18 September.

The BHA says the horseracing industry is worth £4.1 billion to the UK economy and supports 85,000 jobs.

“We hope the Government will take a moment to reflect on the harm this tax will cause to a sport in which our country leads in so many ways,” said Jim Mullen, CEO at The Jockey Club, which operates 15 racecourses.

“We hope this pause for reflection will enable the Government to truly understand the economic impact of horseracing and its cultural significance to communities across the UK, as well as the world-class racing festivals we host.

Royal fans gobsmacked after only just learning King Charles incredible fact

https://i2-prod.mirror.co.uk/incoming/article35485628.ece/ALTERNATES/s615/2_BRITAIN-SCOTLAND-ROYALS.jpg

Being the King comes with a whole lot of perks, and some royal fans have only just discovered one major advantage to being the monarch that makes travelling a breeze

Being the King comes with a whole lot of perks for King Charles, and some royal fans are only just realising the monarch has one major advantage when it comes to travelling.

Many people have probably never thought about it, but King Charles doesn’t have a passport or drivers license and is still able to travel freely throughout the world without the all important documentation that the rest of us need.

The revelation was recently posted on Reddit ’s ‘Today I Learned (TIL)’ forum, with the bemused social media user writing: “TIL that as the reigning monarch of 14 countries, King Charles III is allowed to travel without a passport and drive without a license.”

While Charles is head of the Commonwealth, he is able to travel to countries outside of the Commonwealth without a passport, and has never had to endure passport control or immigration officers when jetting abroad as King.

His lack of documentation was reported by National Geographic, which said in a profile on the King when he was first crowned: “As King, he’s also the only person in the UK who can travel without a passport and drive without a licence.”

Article continues below

The British passport contains a message from King Charles inside, with a request to other nations to allow the holder to pass freely into their country.

As a Reddit commentator elaborated: “As explained to me, the passport is the state saying ‘This is who this person is’. In the UK, that state is formulated to express the will of the Royal, so it’s the King saying ‘This is who this person is’. In the case of King Charles, it’d be like writing down ‘I am me’ on a sheet of paper.”

The King’s unique benefit is further explained on the royal family’s website, which clarifies that the rule only applies to Charles, meaning Queen Camilla, Prince William and all other members of the Firm need passports to travel.

It says: “When travelling overseas, the Sovereign does not require a British passport. As a British passport is issued in the name of His Majesty, it is unnecessary for The King to possess one. All other Members of the Royal Family, including The Queen and The Prince of Wales, have passports.

“The first page of British passports contains a representation of the Royal Arms, together with the following wording: ‘His Britannic Majesty’s Secretary of State requests and requires in the name of His Majesty all those whom it may concern to allow the bearer to pass freely without let or hindrance and to afford the bearer such assistance and protection as may be necessary’.”

It then adds: “In Realms (Commonwealth countries where The King is Sovereign), a similar formula is used, except that the request to all whom it may concern is made in the name of the Realm’s Governor-General, as The King’s representative in that Realm. In Canada, the request is made in the name of His Majesty by the Minister of Foreign Affairs.”

Within the Reddit comments on the post, many began to speculate on what other random perks come with being King, to which one person cheekily claimed: “The monarch is also permitted to send letter mail within the UK without needing to affix a stamp. But that is more a matter of how awkward it is to lick the back of one’s own head.”

Erin downgraded to Category 3 hurricane, NHC says

Hurricane Erin, the first hurricane of this year’s Atlantic season, is a Category 3, the United States National Hurricane Center (NHC) said, downgrading the storm from Category 4 as the wind speed eased slightly.

The storm was 330 miles (530km) southeast of Grand Turk Island packing maximum sustained winds of 125 mph (205 kph), the NHC added early on Sunday.

The hurricane had been gauged as high as a catastrophic Category 5 with maximum sustained winds of 160 mph (240 kph), then downgraded to a Category 4. It had earlier been forecast to strengthen into this week.

On Sunday, Erin was moving west-northwest at nearly 14 mph (22 kph) with a decrease in forward speed expected on Sunday and a turn to the north on Monday and Tuesday, the NHC said.

Swells generated by Erin will continue to affect parts of the northern Leeward Islands, the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, Hispaniola and the Turks and Caicos Islands for the next couple of days, the NHC said. These swells will spread to the Bahamas, Bermuda, the east coast of the United States, and Atlantic Canada during the early and middle portions of the week.

Rough ocean conditions will likely cause life-threatening surf and rip currents, the NHC added.

The Bahamas, which provides some meteorological services for the Turks and Caicos Islands, has issued a Tropical Storm Watch for the British islands to its southeast.

Erin has also raised concerns about wildfire risks, if human-caused sparks ignite parched vegetation and strong dry winds fan the flames. BMS Group Senior Meteorologist Andrew Siffert said these conditions could arise if Erin grows into a powerful offshore storm prompted by colliding warm and cold air rather than tropical seas.

The US government has deployed more than 200 employees from the Federal Emergency Management Agency and other agencies as a precaution. Puerto Rico Housing Secretary Ciary Perez Pena said 367 shelters were inspected and ready to open if needed.

Officials in the Bahamas are also preparing shelters and urging people to monitor the storm’s progress.

Erin is the fifth named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season, which runs from June 1 to November 30 and is expected to be unusually busy. Six to 10 hurricanes are predicted for the season, including three to five reaching major status with winds of more than 177km/h (110mph).

Scientists have linked rapid intensification of hurricanes in the Atlantic to climate change. Global warming is causing the atmosphere to hold more water vapour and is spiking ocean temperatures, and warmer waters give hurricanes fuel to unleash more rain and strengthen more quickly.
