Russia-Ukraine war: List of key events, day 1,308

Here is how things stand on Wednesday, September 24:

Fighting

  • Ukrainian drones attacked the Salavat petrochemical complex, controlled by energy giant Gazprom, in Russia’s Bashkortostan, causing a fire, regional Governor Radiy Khabirov said on Wednesday via his Telegram channel.
  • Ukraine’s military struck two Russian oil distribution facilities in the Bryansk and Samara regions, as well as a military airfield in Russia-occupied Crimea, Kyiv’s general staff said on Telegram.
  • The Russian Ministry of Defence said its troops hit bases of Ukrainian special forces and foreign mercenaries in retaliation for Ukraine’s strike on Crimea.
  • Russian forces also took control of the village of Pereizne in the Donetsk region in eastern Ukraine, the Russian Defence Ministry said on Tuesday.
  • Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant lost all off-site power on Tuesday for the 10th time, prompting the  Ministry of Energy to call for decisive international action to secure the removal of occupying Russian forces from the site to restore nuclear safety in the region.

Politics and diplomacy

  • United States President Donald Trump said on Tuesday at the United Nations headquarters that Ukraine can win back all territory lost to Russia, a major change of stance from his previous calls for Kyiv to make land concessions.
  • Trump also said the US would continue to supply weapons to NATO for the alliance “to do what they want with them”, posting on his Truth Social platform following a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in New York.
  • Zelenskyy said he was surprised by Trump’s comments made earlier in the day and said it was a very positive signal that the US would be with Ukraine until the end of the war.
  • Zelenskyy added that the US leader could be a “game-changer” for Ukraine, as there was an understanding “that President Trump is ready to give Ukraine security guarantees after this war will finish”.
  • The Ukrainian president also met the US special presidential envoy, Keith Kellogg, to discuss procurement of weapons from the US and mutually beneficial agreements on drones, according to Zelenskyy’s post on X.
  • European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said Trump agreed on the need to quickly cut Russia’s revenues from fossil fuels – possibly by the end of the year, speaking to the US president on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly on Tuesday.

Regional security

  • NATO issued a stern warning to Russia on Tuesday against what it called an “increasingly irresponsible” string of violations of its member states’ airspace, adding that it would employ “military and non-military” measures to defend itself.
  • NATO said “our commitment to Article 5 is ironclad”, the provision in the alliance’s founding treaty that commits all member states to mutual defence in the event of an attack on any one of them.
  • European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said “every country has the right to defend itself and act accordingly” if Russian planes violate airspace.
  • Michael Waltz, the new US envoy to the UN, emphasised the US and its allies will “defend every inch of NATO territory”. He was speaking at a UN Security Council meeting on Monday to discuss accusations of a Russian airspace violation.

‘We Are Changing A Lot,’ Says Sinner After US Open Loss To Alcaraz

Jannik Sinner, who is making changes to his game since his US Open final defeat to Carlos Alcaraz, said on Wednesday that he is “reflecting a lot” in his new role.

After Alcaraz won four sets and regaining the world’s number one ranking, the Italian failed to defend his title in New York this month.

After winning the fourth Grand Slam, Sinner said that if he wanted to defeat Spain’s rival, he would need to be more unpredictable in his play.

The 24-year-old Sinner, who returns to action at the China Open, said, “We’ve been reflecting a lot.

In three thrilling sets, Alcaraz defeated him in the final a year ago.

Without revealing what the changes were, the world number two continued, “We are changing a lot of small things where I’m thinking of right now.”

Sinner said the adjustments will cost a small sum and that Sinner will try them out in the Chinese capital.

He said, “I hope that this after recovers in a very positive way, but the amount of mistakes is undoubtedly a little higher.”

On Thursday, Sinner will face Marin Cilic of Croatia in the title match.

Alcaraz will not be playing in Japan this week, but he will instead be playing there to defend his title.

The legendary Roger Federer has warned that tournaments are now less interesting despite the fact that the “Sincaraz” rivalry is now the biggest in men’s tennis.

Federer stated on the Laver Cup’s side that it was “unquestionably” necessary to change up the court surfaces to boost competition.

He accused tournament organizers of helping Sinner and Alcaraz with generally slower courts.

When asked about the comments, Sinner acknowledged that the court speeds on the tour were not very varied.

Yes, we have more or less identical game situations on the court. He claimed that this is how it has been for a while.

“I’m not sure whether or not there will be a change.” I’m just a player who makes the most of my adaptability.

Fulton signs for NBA’s Minnesota Timberwolves

The Minnesota Timberwolves, an NBA franchise, have signed CJ Fulton.

In anticipation of a contract that has been confirmed, the Belfast-born 23-year-old has spent the first half of the pre-season with the back-to-back Western Conference finalists.

Fulton is expected to be traded to the Iowa Wolves in the G-League, the NBA’s team-affiliated development league, in the coming days, giving him a chance to develop and make his way to the Timberwolves’ entire roster.

He explained to BBC Sport NI earlier in September, “It’s a way to keep me glued to the franchise and work my way up.”

Fulton made his NBA debut for the Timberwolves during the Summer League despite being selected for the NBA Draft in June.

He was the third Irish-born player to play basketball at the highest level in the United States since Pat Burke and Susan Moran, who both played four minutes in the team’s 89-85 victory over the Phoenix Suns in July.

The former St. Malachy’s College student then scored two points, two assists, and two steals in 17 minutes against the Houston Rockets.

He initially caught the Timberwolves’ attention when he played college basketball for Lafayette and the Charleston Cougars, where he averaged 7.8 points and 6.5% assists per game.

‘Very hard’ to retire if 2026 car is not competitive – Alonso

Fernando Alonso says it would be “very hard” to retire from Formula 1 at the end of 2026 if Aston Martin are not competitive next season.

The 44-year-old two-time world champion’s contract expires at the end of next year and Alonso says he has “thought about” leaving F1.

“If things go well, I think it’s a very good moment to stop because I’ve been chasing a competitive car and competitive racing for many, many years, and if I have that I think it’s a very good way to close my career,” Alonso said in an interview released by the team.

Alonso won his two world titles with Renault in 2005 and 2006, and has not won a race since his victory for Ferrari in the 2013 Spanish Grand Prix.

Although regarded as one of the greatest F1 drivers of all time, and still performing at a very high level, his career since then has been a story of not having a competitive car.

Alonso finished runner-up in the championship three times in four years for Ferrari, and in 2010 and 2012 missed out on beating Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel to the title by just five and four points respectively, despite driving a less competitive car.

A move to McLaren for 2014 did not pay off as the team were in decline and their Honda engines were the worst on the grid at the time.

He stepped away from F1 at the end of 2018 to pursue other interests, winning the Le Mans 24 Hours and the world endurance championship twice, as well as competing in the Indianapolis 500 and Dakar Rally.

Alonso returned to F1 in 2021 with Alpine and moved to Aston Martin in 2023, when the team had a brief burst of competitiveness and Alonso took six podiums in the first eight races before the team’s form tailed off.

Aston Martin are having a difficult 2025 season and are seventh in the constructors’ championship with seven races remaining.

Alonso is 14th in the drivers’ championship, two points and three places behind team-mate Lance Stroll, despite out-qualifying the Canadian 19 times to one so far.

Aston Martin owner Lawrence Stroll has spent the past few years investing in the team in the hope of turning them into champions.

Next year, they will produce their first car under the technical leadership of design legend Adrain Newey, who joined them in March this year after resigning from Red Bull in April 2024.

Alonso says he sees 2026, when F1 is introducing new regulations for engines and chassis, as an “opportunity” and has been impressed by his first experiences of working with Newey.

“He’s an incredible person and everyone in the team is learning from him,” Alonso said.

Alonso, who will turn 45 in July next year, says he believes Aston Martin have put together all the ingredients needed to win.

“I’m pretty convinced about that,” he said. “The only thing is when. That’s probably my only question mark from this project.

“In my case, driving in the last couple of years of my career, obviously, I want to taste the success of the Aston Martin project.

“But I know that everything takes a little bit of time to glue all the pieces together.

“Aston Martin fighting for and winning the World Championship is more or less guaranteed in the future – we have everything needed to fight for a World Championship.

Ekitike Apologises To Liverpool Fans After ‘Stupid’ Red Card

https://www.channelstv.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/AFP__20250923__76JL74T__v2__MidRes__FblEngLcupLiverpoolSouthampton.jpg

After his late League Cup winner against Southampton, manager Arne Slot criticized him for removing his shirt and apologizing to Liverpool fans.

Five minutes from time, the 23-year-old new signing scored a header to give Liverpool a 2-1 victory over second-tier Southampton as they put on another late show at Anfield on Tuesday.

After opening his account for the club, the France international replaced £125 million ($168 million) Alexander Isak, who had already made his debut.

Ekitike’s initial offense was one of being punched away in resentment.

In the 85th minute, Shea Charles equalized before holding his shirt up for the cameras, but Ekitike drove away from the corner flag and removed his shirt.

The forward will be suspended for the Premier League leaders’ trip to Crystal Palace on Saturday if the referee issued a second caution followed by a red card.

Ekitike, who signed for the club for £69 million in July, claimed he had become enraged.

He shared his excitement on Instagram by posting, “I was so excited tonight to help the team win another victory here in our home for my first Carabao Cup (League Cup) game.”

He continued, “The emotion got the better of me tonight.” I’m sorry to the Red family.

Slot, the manager of Liverpool, was clearly unimpressed by Ekitike’s actions in the third-round tie as “needless” and “stupid.”

He said, “I told him that I can understand if you score in the Champions League final in the 87th minute after outplaying three players and hitting it in the top corner.”

What did I do when he says, “This is all about me, what did I do?”

“But I’m 47 and old, and I’m old-fashioned. Although I’ve never played at this level, I did score a few goals, and if I had, I would have turned around and said to Federico Chiesa, “This goal is all about you, this is not about me.”

With three goals in five Premier League games, Ekitike has a strong start to the season.

However, the Swede is competing for a forward slot with Isak and cannot afford to miss games.

‘Stokes makes you feel on top of world’ – Ashes call-up Jacks

After being unexpectedly called off for the Ashes this winter, England Test captain Ben Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum say they make new players feel “on top of the world.”

Rehan Ahmed, Liam Dawson, and Jack Leach are all scheduled to play against off-spinner Jacks in their only other Test appearances in 2022, but Shoaib Bashir will be covered there.

Jacks told BBC Radio 5 Live, “You feel like you can take anyone on.”

“For someone who makes their debut on the team, it builds you up quickly and makes you feel like you belong there right away.

Jacks is a regular member of England’s white-ball team, but this year’s first-class cricket team has only taken five wickets in 74.1 overs.

“Baz (McCullum) called me, had a casual chat, then dropped it in, and it completely surprised me,” Jacks said.

I’m happy to fill any position that the team requires. I’ve been playing that game for the white-ball team.

“It was fantastic to be a part of the Stokes-led Test side.” Therefore, I’m eager to participate once more.
