No panic – but is this Liverpool’s transitional season coming a year late?

Liverpool’s players were subjected to fireworks let off outside their Istanbul hotel designed to disturb their sleep – but it is a second successive loss that must act as the real wake-up call.

The Premier League champions hardly need to go into panic mode as they sit top of the table, but the warning signs of frailty that have dogged the early weeks of their campaign were on display again as they lost 1-0 to Galatasaray in the Champions League.

After a seamless transition following his succession to Jurgen Klopp, the title won so impressively in his first term in charge, head coach Arne Slot has hit the first real bumps in the road.

On current evidence, after spending close to £450m in the summer, this may yet turn out to be Slot’s transitional campaign, rather than the smooth takeover from Klopp without any major acquisitions that followed his arrival from Feyenoord.

Alexander Isak, a substitute in Turkey, is still way short of full match fitness following his drawn-out and acrimonious British record £125m move from Newcastle United.

And Florian Wirtz, a little cheaper at £116m from Bayer Leverkusen, currently looks somewhat lost and lightweight while he adjusts to the pace of life at Liverpool.

But this was not a good night for Slot either.

The Dutchman’s golden touch with his decision-making deserted him here in Istanbul, the choice to leave Mohamed Salah on the bench backfiring. When the Egyptian was introduced just after the hour, Galatasaray held the lead and the initiative with Liverpool struggling to create chances.

Liverpool, as they were when beaten at Crystal Palace and as they have been all season, were once again exposed by a Galatasaray side that had clearly done their homework well under coach Okan Buruk.

The warning signals were posted in the opening moments when Baris Alper Yilmaz did what other players have done too often for Slot’s liking. The forward ran through on goal unchallenged, only for keeper Alisson to rescue Liverpool once more.

Slot used new right-back Jeremie Frimpong as a right-sided attacker, not exactly an act of faith in his defensive abilities, with recognised midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai moved to defence.

It was Szoboszlai who conceded the decisive 16th-minute penalty when he was adjudged to have fouled Yilmaz, Victor Osimhen completing the formalities amid scenes of near hysteria.

As former Scotland winger Pat Nevin so aptly put it on BBC Radio 5 Live: “It is so un-Liverpool.”

After the loss at Selhurst Park, the trip to Istanbul was arguably the last thing Liverpool needed, walking into this hostile, fanatical atmosphere that is a ready-built stage for sporting theatre.

Galatasaray’s fans gathered in their thousands in the bars and cafes close to this magnificent arena, built on a hill so it overlooks Istanbul, hours before kick-off.

And the cacophony inside also started hours before the start and, when the action began, every Liverpool touch was greeted with deafening, piercing whistles.

Has Wirtz unbalanced Liverpool?

One of the major sources of concern in Liverpool’s season so far is the lack of impact from Wirtz.

Here is a player clearly rich in talent and pedigree, who attracted strong interest from Manchester City before choosing Liverpool.

He was the Bundesliga’s golden boy after his development under Xabi Alonso at Bayer Leverkusen.

Wirtz is playing in a withdrawn role behind Liverpool’s striker – Ekitike in Istanbul – but apart from one shot in the first half that forced a save from Galatasaray keeper Ugurcan Cakir, he was once more peripheral. It left him still seeking his first Liverpool goal.

Even the best players sometimes need to bed in, with Wirtz getting to know his team-mates and his team-mates getting to know him, but Liverpool will hope for a spark of inspiration for their £116m man sooner rather than later.

“You’re thinking to yourself ‘what is the plan? What is the plan to change it massively?;” said Nevin, speaking about Wirtz’s role.

“Because you didn’t need to change much, because it was pretty good before.”

And we return to the subject of Slot’s transition, from a Liverpool team that was virtually untouched from when he was appointed to winning the Premier League at a canter, to one trying to integrate a host of new players.

Florian Wirtz touch map graphic

“I don’t see where Wirtz gets into the team,” ex-England captain Wayne Rooney said on The Wayne Rooney Show. “I think it was a lot of money. I think Wirtz actually damages the balance of Liverpool and how they play.

“He’s a top player and I’m sure he will get better – but he’s had a slow start and I think there’s no denying that.”

Wirtz’s current struggles are not down to a shortage of endeavour. He attempted more dribbles or shots on goal than anyone else for Liverpool in Istanbul. He will hope his hard work is rewarded soon.

Liverpool statistics also back up the theory they are now easier to get at, needing late goals against Bournemouth, Newcastle , Arsenal, Burnley, Atletico Madrid in the Champions League and Southampton in the Carabao Cup. They also conceded two-goal leads against Bournemouth, Newcastle and Atletico.

And, again, you can compare the start of this season to the beginning of last – they have had only two clean sheets in 10 games this season having kept six in their first 10 last season.

“Right now they’re not there yet,” said ex-Liverpool forward Daniel Sturridge on Amazon Prime. “When you look at the way they’re playing right now they’re not the same team as last year. You can see the chemistry is not right at this present moment in this time – but they have plenty of time to get it right. It’s not panic stations.”

Slot, perfectly understandably, delivered measured perspective as he said: “We are not so far off the level shown last season. This is sometimes what the schedule can bring, Galatasaray is not a simple game. We now play Chelsea away, a difficult game.

“The margins are small and they were last season. For the second time in a row we are on the wrong side.

“I saw a lot of things in the first half, but the second half was much less. I don’t think in the second half there was a lot of playing time, their striker was on the floor four or five times. It was difficult to get momentum in the game.”

Mourinho defeated but still loved on Chelsea return

Jose Mourinho appoints himself as Chelsea’s “Special One” when he first arrived at Stamford Bridge more than 20 years ago.

The 62-year-old has a distinguished and distinguished managerial career with plenty of successes, significant controversy, and instances where he has let himself down.

But he won’t experience the affection that Chelsea has for him anywhere.

During his new club Benfica’s 1-0 Champions League defeat, they yelled his name loudly three times. At one point in the second half, he was serenaded by the Shed and the Matthew Harding Stand.

He almost waved skeptically. His main focus was on the pitch, he claimed, because he has a reputation to live up to. His apprehension to succeed was greater than it was then.

He claimed that no one was waiting for him when I first arrived. There were numerous question marks, they said.

Everyone now believes that I have magical powers to create things.

In Chelsea’s packed media conference room, he was speaking. Jose is well known to the presenters. Few things compare to Brian Pullman’s impact.

Pullman spent a remarkable 56 years at Chelsea before retiring in 2024. In the media conference room, Jose was a well-known face, and he recalled how Pullman had cared for him in the past.

Mourinho grinned to see that his former coworker had made the effort to meet him, and he inquired, “Where are my favorite biscuits? “Pullman removed a nearby tea towel to reveal a dozen custard creams.” As he stood up and left, the Portuguese grabbed a few people before taking the rest. The pair’s embrace was a joy to witness.

Benfica manager Jose Mourinho hugs former long-serving Chelsea employee Brian Pullman at Stamford BridgeBBC Sport

The Mourinho, who spoke to his former teammate Joe Cole 90 minutes before kick-off and relaxed with his arm draped on the former England star’s shoulder as he engaged in a casual conversation, spent an age talking to another long-term employee at Chelsea, Thresa Conneely. the one who walked into the dressing room to give his pre-game team talk before stopping and signing a young Chelsea fan’s shirt.

When asked about the reaction of the supporters, Mourinho responded, “Of course I thank them.”

On the pitch, I did it. I reside here. On the street, we talk daily.

In 20 years, I’m hoping to visit [Stamford Bridge] with my grandchildren.

I am a part of their history, just as they are of mine.

Mourinho, however, wants to win. As he questioned decisions and demanded more from his players, he could tell that as he had always done on the touchline.

Even though the enormous income gap between England’s Champions League contenders and those from Portugal, it seemed odd to hear him mention how well his team had performed in defeat.

Given that what is now the home dugout straddles the halfway line, it makes sense why the club waited for Mauricio Pochettino to change them while he was manager.

However, it did mean he was closer to the Benfica fans because he produced yet another classic Mourinho moment in the second half.

Enzo Fernandez’s signing by Chelsea two years ago may have cost the Lisbon club a record sum of £100 million, but the amount of money clearly has no bearing on what the club’s supporters think of him.

Fernandez was shot by missiles from both the stands’ upper and lower sections as he turned around.

Mourinho was a reminder of his time as Porto manager at Old Trafford and the champions league loser when he witnessed what was happening when he jumped out of his seat and flew down the touchline in 2004.

He is currently unable to control his knee slide. Instead, he remained silent while urging his supporters to stop.

Although some of them may not have been as he had planned, Fernandez may have been able to escape the bombardment long enough.

Jose the peacemaker Joe the friend

Mourinho’s return to Benfica was memorable despite Chelsea and Benfica not having won.

Injured goalkeeper Alisson ‘will not play on Saturday’

Reuters

Liverpool manager Arne Slot says goalkeeper Alisson will miss the game against Chelsea on Saturday after the Brazilian was injured against Galatasaray.

The 32-year-old had to be replaced by Giorgi Mamardashvili in the 56th minute of the 1-0 Champions League defeat in Istanbul.

Alisson limped off after saving from goalscorer Victor Osimhen, while striker Hugo Ekitike then pulled up after stretching for the ball and also had to be replaced.

Slot said the Brazil international had felt something when “sprinting back”.

“If my player is on the floor, nine out of 10 times I fear the worst and with the worst I mean that he cannot continue,” Slot said.

“It’s never positive if you go off like this. You can be sure he is not playing Saturday.”

Mamardashvili is in line for a Premier League debut at Stamford Bridge. The Georgian was signed from Valencia in the summer for £29m.

Alisson missed 10 Premier League games last season with a hamstring injury.

There is also a doubt over Ekitike, who limped off during the second half.

“I wasn’t really thinking that we had an injury, but Hugo felt something,” Slot added.

Stacey Solomon slams husband Joe Swash’s ‘sheer audacity’ over gift for ‘health kick’

Loose Women star Stacey Solomon hit out at her husband Joe Swash as she branded his gift ‘terrible’ and slammed his ‘sheer audacity’ amid her fitness journey

Stacey Solomon slammed her husband Joe Swash as he gave her a “terrible” present amid her fitness journey. The Loose Women star, 35, has been open about her weight loss journey and admitted she’s “so proud” of herself.

She revealed she has stuck to weight training since February, explaining: “I genuinely only do it because I want to be so strong.” The mum-of-five has been wanting to build her strength and showed off her impressive results while on holiday this summer.

However, Stacey clashed with Joe after he gave her a gift that he thought would help her journey. For Mother’s Day, Joe gifted her a calorie counting scale that was not well received by the TV star.

He said it was something that would help her on her “health kick,” but Stacey was far from impressed. She fumed: “I would never measure my calories!

“I would never measure my calories. Who the hell wants a calorie counter for Mother’s Day? What are you trying to say? And also, it’s the sheer audacity that you think that I have the time to weigh my food!”

The mum to Rex, five, Rose, three, Belle, two, with her husband Joe, 43, and also mum to Zachary, 17, and Leighton, 12, from past relationships previously shared her nerves about wearing bikinis.

Yet, this summer Stacey shared stunning photos as she took a dip under a waterfall. In her candid post, Stacey shared: “Feeling beautiful my sister hyped me up today & made me feel really pretty so I’m posting these.

“I love you Jem also my 3 day blow dry made it to the pool cave for at least 3 mins #buzzing.” Stacey opened up on her fitness regime as she added: “P.S my body looks a little different to last years summer holiday.

“I am actually so proud of myself because I’ve stuck to my weight training consistently since February. Kept quiet and just got my head down & kept going. I genuinely only do it because I want to be so strong.

“Like boss b**** strong. I want to forever be able to pick up my babies with ease & carry double buggies on my shoulder when necessary.

“I feel so much stronger this year which is so empowering & yes my body has changed but honestly I loved my body aesthetically last year as much as I do this year. I’ve always been beautiful no matter what shape or size.”

She concluded: “So I suppose what I’m trying to say is… Don’t commit to fitness just for the looks. Do it so you can wrestle your 17 year old & carry all three of your toddlers in 40 heat & you’ll enjoy the journey more.”

Stacey converted a barn at her Pickle Cottage into a gym following the birth of her daughter Rose in 2023. She has also had the love and support from her older sister Samantha, who is a personal trainer.

While Stacey has admitted she still finds exercising tough and like she is “going to die” when does it, she said the feeling she gets after a work out is worth it.

Coronation Street legend joins BBC soap after exit 28 years ago

https://i2-prod.mirror.co.uk/incoming/article35993118.ece/ALTERNATES/s615/1_js310167628-1.jpg

A legend of Coronation Street and Emmerdale is switching her role on the cobbles and the Dales at ITV for hit BBC One drama series Waterloo Road as she makes her debut

A Coronation Street legend is ready for a new role almost three decades after leaving the Corrie cobbles. The soap star is ready for a new challenge as she joined a BBC soap.

Denise Black was initially on the long-running ITV soap as Denise Osbourne in Weatherfield. Her character was the former partner of Ken Barlow. She appeared between 1992 and 1997, with her character and Ken sharing son Daniel Osbourne.

After six years full-time, Denise later had two guest stints on the cobbles. The first came 10 years on from her initial exit, with the second coming in 2017.

She also starred on Emmerdale. Now, however, Denise is set to swap ITV for the BBC after she signed up to play a brand new character in Waterloo Road.

Denise will take on the part of Mo McManus, a character who finds herself caught up in a street showdown with police on the drama series. Her debut appearance comes in episode six of the latest series.

Her role in Emmerdale saw her join the Dingle clan. Her character, Joanie Dingle, first appeared in 2013. She was the reason for Zak and Lisa’s divorce and she later tied the knot with Zak.

However, her time in the Dales came to an end after her character’s sudden death in 2017 following a heart attack.

Months after her exit, she was back in front of the Corrie cameras. At the time, viewers were left stunned after Denise returned to stop Daniel killing Ken. The desperate scenes saw Denise’s character return in desperate circumstances after her son looked like he was about to kill Corrie’s longest standing character.

At the time, Ken had a showdown with Daniel after discovering he attacked him, demanding to know why he bashed him over the head with a book.

The pair had a heated argument about the attack as Ken begged his son to let him go free before a knock at the door startled the pair. It turned out to be Denise, who had fled from the family home in 2007, leaving a teenage Daniel to fend for himself.

Speaking at the time about her return to the soap, she said she had been so keen to bond with Rob Mallard – who plays her on screen son – she stayed on the sofa in his home so they could rehearse together.

Denise said: “I had to go back and watch Denise Osbourne from the early 90s which is very strange because that is a long time ago and a different me. It is really hard, I could hardly recognise myself I thought ‘god I am hot!’. What happened?

Liam Gallagher deletes cryptic Oasis reunion message as fans work out real meaning

https://i2-prod.mirror.co.uk/incoming/article35993039.ece/ALTERNATES/s615/0_BESTPIX-MEXICO-MUSIC-CONCERT-OASIS.jpg

Fans have been treated to a 2025 reunion world tour all summer by Oasis, but Liam Gallagher teased there is still more to come as he shared a very moving post.

Liam Gallagher sent fans into a frenzy with a random post before swiftly deleting all evidence. The Oasis icon took to X where he shared a very cryptic post amid rumours of more reunion shows with brother Noel.

Fans soon managed to take their own screenshots, but the post was quickly removed from his official account. After their epic 2025 reunion tour, many people believe his message made reference to more Oasis shows.

Liam and Noel finally reunited and put years of feuding behind them this summer. They kicked off their world tour in Cardiff before travelling the UK, North America and South America.

Oasis haven’t performed in Asia or Oceania since wrapping up their most recent shows in London. Liam said, “I want to thank you a lot for keeping the faith and putting this band back on the f**king map,” on Sunday on the Wembley Stadium stage.

“Champagne Supernova.” Next year, see you! Fans believe Liam teased more shows are coming in late last night with his post. He wrote “MMXXV11” in Roman numerals.

One fan quickly offered their theories, saying, “It was 2025 in roman numerals with an 11 after it, so I assume it was an announcement in November 2025. Another added, “Maybe we’ll have a new album this year.”

Although he has said “see you next year” numerous times throughout the tour, Noel is trying to change the subject when questioned about Knebworth next year, there is definitely something going on next year.

Whatever that was about, someone else said, “It’s a sign of something coming up for the band, which means… “Oasis is so back, baby”!

Other fans were already speculating what Liam’s statement on stage this weekend meant. A fan asked, “Final gig? ” on the r/Oasis Reddit page.

Oasis will be wrapping up this lap of honor next year with a number of final appearances, it’s pretty obvious. Let’s assume this isn’t happening because Oasis management have been denying this publicly and the venue isn’t even good, as I’ve heard. What do you think will happen next with this tour?

“I like the concept of a few Europe warmup venues early in 2026, followed by a five-night Etihad residency, which ends where they started, in a couple of weeks.”

However, many people agreed that Manchester, their home city, should host the show’s finale. The final reunion concert should be in Manchester, a fan wrote. Others believed that this could just be the start of a new relationship, saying, “I don’t believe the reunion is going to end, but it will continue to be a process.”

Noel and Liam were never particularly interested in performing solo, as another person said, and they are both having a great time on this tour. They seem to be sticking around with every successful gig, which is a growing trend.
