Can Trump force India to give up buying Russian oil?

United States President Donald Trump has claimed that India has agreed to stop buying Russian oil, as Washington seeks to pressure Russia to end its war in Ukraine by cutting off the Kremlin’s vital energy revenues. Trump had said he would try to persuade China to do the same.

The US president told reporters on Wednesday that he had received assurances from Prime Minister Narendra Modi that India would halt its oil purchases “within a short period of time”. India and China are the two biggest buyers of Russian seaborne crude exports.

Trump has sought to leverage his ongoing trade negotiations with New Delhi to pressure India over Russian oil. And, in August, he used India’s continuing imports of Russian oil as a pretext to impose additional trade tariffs on New Delhi. But Modi has so far refused to back down. For months, Indian officials have defended purchases of Russian energy as vital for India’s national security.

A move by India now to stop its imports would signal a major shift by one of Moscow’s top energy customers, and could undermine Russia’s war efforts in Ukraine.

Why has Russian oil been a bone of contention between India and the US?

Citing India’s continued imports of Russian oil, Trump slapped an additional 25 percent trade tariff on New Delhi in August – bringing tariffs to a total 50 percent. He did not instigate similar punitive actions against China, which remains the largest importer of Russian oil, however.

China imported a record 109 million tonnes of Russian crude last year, representing nearly 20 percent of its total energy imports, according to Chinese customs data. India, by contrast, imported 88 million tonnes of Russian oil in 2024.

New Delhi has, therefore, accused Washington of selectively targeting India in its latest round of tariffs. Some observers argue that Trump’s stance in part reflects frustration with India’s unwillingness to acquiesce to his specific demands in ongoing trade talks.

“India’s longstanding protectionist measures – such as high tariffs for agricultural goods and subsidies on pharmaceuticals – have been a point of friction in US-India trade talks,” Alicia Garcia Herrero, chief Asia Pacific economist at Natixis in Hong Kong, told Al Jazeera.

By contrast, Trump has adopted a noticeably softer approach with China, avoiding similar punitive, energy-linked tariffs. Some observers believe he may be biding his time to secure a broader trade deal with Beijing that would include access to China’s rare-earth metals.

Rare earths are a group of 17 elements essential to various manufacturing industries, including in the US, from car parts and military technology. China has long dominated the mining and processing of rare earth minerals and currently restricts exports of 12 of them.

The upshot is that “China has much more leverage [than India], as shown by its recent export controls”, explained Garcia Herrero.

The most recent of China’s export restrictions, which require foreign companies to obtain special approvals from Beijing if they wish to purchase certain rare-earth products, were introduced this week, ahead of an expected meeting between Trump and his Chinese counterpart – President Xi Jinping – later this month.

In response to Beijing’s move, Trump has threatened to impose a new 100 percent tariff on Chinese exports from November 1. Still, he said his planned meeting with Xi is expected to go ahead: “I’m going to be there regardless, so I assume we might have it,” he told reporters last Friday.

How reliant is India on Russian energy?

Russia is New Delhi’s largest source of oil. According to Kpler, the shipping analytics company, India imported 4.5 million bpd (barrels per day) of crude in September. Of that, Russian supplies accounted for roughly 1.6 million bpd – or 34 percent of the total.

That represents an eye-watering 2,250 percent increase from January 2022, one month before Russia launched its full-scale invasion in Ukraine. At the time, India was importing just 68,000 bpd of oil from Russia.

Meanwhile, India is the second-largest buyer of Russian energy after China, according to data from the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA). China purchased 47 percent of Russia’s crude exports in September, followed by India at 38 percent.

Why is India buying so much Russian oil now?

In December 2022, several Western nations imposed a $60 price cap on Russian crude oil in a bid to reduce Russia’s ability to finance its war in Ukraine. This forced Moscow to compete more aggressively on prices if buyers wanted access to Western shipping and insurance services.

But cheaper Russian oil helped narrow New Delhi’s current account deficit, which fell by 65 percent in 2023-2024 compared to the previous year. Elsewhere, Reliance Industries (RIL) – now India’s top importer of Russian seaborne crude – became the biggest corporate winner.

In 2021, Russian crude accounted for just 3 percent of imports at Reliance’s Jamnagar refinery, India’s largest private facility. By 2025, that share had surged to around 50 percent, according to CREA.

CREA has also calculated that the Jamnagar refinery exported $85.9bn of refined products globally from February 2022 to July 2025. Incidentally, an estimated 42 percent ($36bn) of that has gone to countries sanctioning Russia.

How has India responded to Trump’s latest claim?

India has not officially confirmed Trump’s claim that it has promised to stop buying Russian oil.

Despite Trump’s punitive tariffs, New Delhi has consistently defended its purchase of Russian oil amid the war in Ukraine. A spokesperson for India’s External Affairs Ministry, Shri Randhir Jaiswal, reiterated that stance on Thursday. But he also hinted that India could look to diversify its import base.

In an official statement, he said: “Ensuring stable energy prices and secured supplies have been the twin goals of our energy policy. This includes broad-basing our energy sourcing and diversifying as appropriate.”

He added: “Where the US is concerned, we have for many years sought to expand our energy procurement … The current Administration has shown interest in deepening energy cooperation with India. Discussions are ongoing.”

Donald Trump’s sick sexist response to woman journalist sparks ‘gross’ complaints

Grim footage from the White House shows President Donald Trump once again speaking dismissively to a female reporter, refusing to answer her questions while referring to her condescendingly as ‘darling’

President Donald Trump has left social media users repulsed following a patronising exchange with a female reporter, which saw him deflect her questions with an irrelevant response many have deemed misogynistic.

Addressing President Trump at the White House, the journalist asked: “As China defends its presence in Latin America, what role do you see for the US?” Cutting her off with a smirk, the 79-year-old turned to his Vice President, JD Vance and said: “I just like to watch her talk.”

In a dismissive tone some have described as “disgusting” and “demeaning”, President Trump told the media professional: “Good job. Thank you, darling.” Notably, he did not bother to answer her question. Footage shows Trump’s team laughing along as he attempts to humiliate the reporter, simply for doing her job.

A video of the sexist incident has since gone viral, with a number of people pointing out that, had such condescending language been used in any other workplace, disciplinary action would likely be taken.

Commenting beneath the video, which was shared on social media platform X, one person wrote: “He treats all women as objects that only exist for his amusement. Self-respecting women don’t want anything to do with him.” Another tweeted: “Has any other leader of the free world countries ever consistently spoken to female reporters so rudely, disrespected them or even told them to shut up? The answer is a definite no.”

This follows another recent incident aboard Air Force One, where Trump spoke down to reporter Dasha Burns of Politico, after she questioned him on the topic of tariffs in China. Refusing to engage with her questions, Trump told Burns, “Let’s get somebody else to ask some questions, you mind? Because Politico is fake news.”

Unfortunately, Trump’s disrespectful treatment of women in the media is nothing new. Back in August 2015, when the businessman turned politician was making his first bid for the Oval Office, then Fox News reporter Megyn Kelly called Trump out at the Republican Party presidential debate, for having referred to women as “fat pigs”, “slobs”, and “dogs”.

Trump responded with a cruel joke about comedian Rosie O’Donnell, to which Ms Kelly replied: “Does that sound to you like the temperament of a man we should elect as president?” This marked the beginning of Trump’s targeting of Kelly, who he described as having “zero respect for” during an interview with Fox News.

POTUS even appeared to make a sexist reference to menstruation during a separate interview with CNN, in which he said of Kelly, “There was blood coming out of her eyes, blood coming out of her wherever.” Such remarks set the tone for a presidency in which even the slightest criticisms by members of the press have been deemed “fake news” by the reality TV-trained politician and his often fanatic followers. And female journalists have been subjected to particularly grim treatment.

On this particular subject, Elisa Lees Munoz, the Executive Director of the International Women’s Media Foundation, previously told The Independent: “We know that he does not discriminate on gender with regards to his criticism and his attacks, but we have particularly noticed the way that he attacks female journalists and it is a very gendered attack, which really demonstrates some misogynistic tendencies that we see online and in the streets every day.”

Reflecting on the purpose of these often very personal attacks, Ms Munoz explained: “It is really designed to shut them up, to try to get them to stop working, to belittle, to humiliate.”

The actress has continued to focus on her fuelling her body through eating healthy salads and keeping up with a strict workout regime.

The Morning Show star was recently pictured glowing at a red carpet event for the new season of the Apple TV drama, where she was supported by her new boyfriend, Jim Curtis.

The pair’s romance first became public in July when they were seen celebrating American Independence Day in Mallorca with some of Jennifer’s friends from Hollywood, including Jason Bateman and his wife, Amanda Anka.

McIlroy trails Lowry in India after ditching driver

DP World India Championship – first round

Shane Lowry fired an opening eight-under 64 to lead the DP World India Championship, with Rory McIlroy five shots back after leaving his driver out of the bag.

Irishman Lowry, who missed the cut at last week’s Open de Espana, birdied six of his last eight holes to lead Japan’s Keita Nakajima by one shot.

Lowry and McIlroy’s Ryder Cup team-mate Tommy Fleetwood and captain Luke Donald both shot four-under 68.

Playing for the first time since Europe’s Ryder Cup triumph in New York last month, McIlroy fired six birdies and three bogeys in an up-and-down opening round.

The world number two chipped in from the fringe on the 10th – his opening hole – before slipping to back-to-back bogeys.

He picked up shots on the par-fives 14th and 18th and gained three more shots on his back nine before a bogey six at the eighth.

Despite opting for a safer approach off the tee, Northern Ireland’s McIlroy said he still found Delhi Golf Club trickier than expected.

‘Traffic not as off-putting as Ryder Cup crowd’

After starting with four pars, Lowry – who is without an individual victory since September 2022 – carded back-to-back birdies at the fifth and sixth holes.

The former Open champion vaulted into a share of the lead with a run of five straight birdies from the par-four 11th before picking up a shot at the last to edge ahead of Nakajima.

“It’s not that hard when you hit it in play out there, but you start missing fairways it becomes quite tricky, so I’m happy with that,” said Lowry.

He added: “You need to shape it around the course, hit it in position off the tee and it’s all about your iron play. That’s one of my strengths and I took advantage of that today and managed to roll a few putts in on the back nine, which was nice.”

Lowry added there was a “little bit” of Ryder Cup chat with playing partners Fleetwood and Donald.

“We could hear the horns from the road, it was not as off-putting as the Bethpage [Black] crowd,” he said with a smile, referring to the hostile New York fans at last month’s Ryder Cup.

Fleetwood mixed four birdies, an eagle and two bogeys to sit four shots back.

Donald, who is playing his first tournament since his second Ryder Cup success as captain, carded five birdies and a bogey to match fellow Englishman Fleetwood and 2023 Open champion Brian Harman.
