Climate change adds extra month of extreme heat for 4bn people: Report

According to a recent study, about half of the world’s population has experienced an additional month of extreme heat as a result of human-caused climate change.

According to the report (pdf) from World Weather Attribution, Climate Central, and the Red Cross, the extreme heat caused deaths and illnesses, damaged agricultural crops, and stretched the country’s healthcare systems.

Researchers examined weather data from May 1, 2024 through May 1, 2025 to highlight the dangers of extreme heat, which is defined as temperatures exceeding 90% of those recorded at a given location between 1991 and 2020.

According to the study, at least 30 days of extreme heat were experienced by at least 4 billion people, or 49 percent of the global population. During the same time period, 67 extreme heat events were discovered, according to the report.

Heat is arguably the deadliest extreme event, according to the report, though floods and cyclones frequently dominate headlines.

Experts claim that extreme heat-related deaths are frequently underreported or mischaracterized. One of the report’s authors, Friederike Otto, associate professor of climate science at Imperial College London, claimed that heat waves are silent killers.

People don’t pass away in a heatwave on the street; instead, they are simply not seen. Either way, they either pass away in hospitals or poorly insulated homes.

Heatwaves will affect more people, he added, with each barrel of oil burned, each tonne of carbon dioxide released, and each fraction of a degree of warming.

According to the study, the Caribbean region experienced some of the highest extreme heat days, with the island of Aruba recording 187 of them, or 142 days more than normal without climate change.

Extreme heat is most prevalent in low-income communities and vulnerable populations, including older people and those with medical conditions.

Without climate change, the report claims that the extreme heat events that took place in Central Asia in March, South Sudan in February, and the Mediterranean in July would not have been possible.

In Morocco, the temperature reached 118 degrees Fahrenheit (48 degrees Celsius) in July, which caused at least 21 fatalities.

In a statement attributed to the Red Cross Red Crescent Climate Center, Roop Singh, head of urban and attribution, claimed that people are noticing that the temperature is rising without any direct correlation with climate change.

To address the growing challenge, Singh said, “We need to quickly scale our responses to heat by better early warning systems, heat action plans, and long-term planning for heat in urban areas.”

Without eliminating fossil fuels, the researchers predicted that heatwaves would continue to grow more frequent and severe.

Russell Brand pleads not guilty to sex offence charges as he appears in court

Russell Brand has entered a not-guilty plea to rape, sexual assault, and other indecent assault charges today.

The comedian and actor, 49, is currently scheduled to stand trial for four to five weeks in June of next year for allegedly attacking four different women, including one rape allegation, one adulterous assault allegation, one oral rape allegation, and two additional sexual assault counts.

Before being granted conditional bail during a ten-minute hearing at Southwark Crown Court, Brand only spoke to offer each not-guilty plea to each of the five charges and confirm his name.

He walked into the court building carrying a small black book shortly before 10am while being surrounded by dozens of reporters, photographers, and police officers.

Before entering his plea, Brand was photographed entering court (AP).

Brand, who was dressed in tight, dark pants, a shirt with an open neck, and dark sunglasses before entering the dock, is being represented by barrister Ian Winter, KC, whose website describes him as a “highly sought-after criminal specialist with a special emphasis on fraud and financial crime.”

His father Ron, who sat on the front row of the public gallery, sat with Brand, who was accused of the crimes by post last month, in court today.

At the end of the hearing, the star slowly left the courtroom and thanked an usher for his efforts.

Brand, who turns 50 next Wednesday, was charged with the crimes last month by post. Prosecutors Suki Dhadda gave a brief summary of the case against him at a previous hearing on May 2.

Westminster Magistrates Court heard that the TV star allegedly attacked the first accuser at a hotel in Bournemouth, Dorset, in a court hearing earlier this month. In a television station’s alleged 2001 incident, he also allegedly tried to drag a second woman’s forearm into a male toilet.

Before becoming a stand-up comedian, Brand, who has lived in Santa Rosa Beach, Florida, with his wife Laura Gallacher and their three children, was born in Essex. Later, he transitioned to hosting and presenting TV and radio programs for a variety of channels, including the BBC and Channel 4.

Before appearing in a number of Hollywood films, including Get Him to the Greek, he hosted Big Brother’s Big Mouth, a spin-off of the popular television program Big Brother, as well as the NME, MTV, and Brit Awards ceremonies. The born-again Christian has since resurrected as an “anti-woke” political podcaster, amassing millions of online followers on the Rumble online video platform.

In September 2023, the Sunday Times, the Times, and Channel 4’s Dispatches conducted an investigation that turned up numerous serious allegations against him.

In a video that was shot in Florida last month, Brand made an outcry against the accusations (INSTAGRAM).

The Metropolitan Police Service then revealed that Brand had been charged in April. Brand stated in a video in April that he had never engaged in non-consensual activity and was grateful for the opportunity to defend the charges in court after the Met and the Crown Prosecution Service made the announcement.

He wrote to his 11.3 million followers on X, a prior version of Twitter, that he was a drug addict, sex addict, and impoverished, but what I never was was a rapist. I’ve never engaged in “unconsensual acts.”

Because of my unwavering innocence, he continued, “I’m absolutely open to and welcome the opportunity to defend myself.”

Although the vibrant floral print makes it ideal for the summer, we’ve found some other great high street stores to shop as well if you’re planning a wedding and feel like it might be too predominantly white. The silhouette of Milly’s stunning dress is similar to that of ASOS DESIGN Petite Flutter Sleeve Maxi Dress with Ruffle Godets in Pink Floral Print, which costs £70.

It is more fitted in the bodice than Milly’s flowing maxi dress, and has short flutter sleeves to help cover your upper arms. The skirt has a lot of movement and flow thanks to the use of vertical ruffles, and the pink floral print prevents you from arriving at a wedding too heavily.

The limited edition Blue Floral Ruffle Slip Maxi Dress from River Island costs £85 and has an enormous white floral print that makes an impact. The dress itself has a classic bias cut slip style that is both flattering and chic, while the straps on the dress and a simple ruffle detail on the shoulder are present.

A former Royal Marine is set to appear in court on charges of the fatal collision involving the Liverpool parade that left 79 people injured.

At the celebration of Liverpool’s Premier League victory, a car ploughed into fans, according to Merseyside Police, and Paul Doyle, 53, from Burghill Road in West Derby, was detained on Monday.

At 18:00 BST, a nine-year-old was hurt when the car struck supporters on Water Street.

Seven people are still in the hospital, according to Merseyside Police’s Assistant Chief Constable Jenny Sims, at a press conference following the incident.

The suspect’s neighbors have expressed shock and disbelief to the BBC, who have spoken with him.

In the hours immediately following the collision, they claimed, Burghill Road was rife with police.

Detectives were “reviewing a huge volume” of mobile phone and CCTV footage, according to Assistant Chief Constable Jenny Sims.

This included witness statements, as well as footage from smartphones, mobile devices, businesses, and dashcams, according to Sarah Hammond, chief prosecutor for the Mersey-Cheshire region of the Crown Prosecution Service.

She stated that as the investigation progresses, the allegations would be kept under wraps.

There are seven offences in Mr. Doyle’s case that can be broken down into four categories.

The first charge, which is related to an alleged offence committed against a child, includes two counts of wounding with the intention to grieve bodily harm (GBH).

The second charge is one of grievous bodily harm, with the intention to inflict grievous bodily harm.

It has to do with the type of injury the Sentencing Council claims to have caused.

GBH doesn’t demand that a person has suffered an open wound. The victim’s skin must have been broken in order to wrestle.

One of the alleged crimes, which Mr. Doyle also faces, involves a child, and is related to two other charges, one of which is alleged to be against him.

Driving is dangerous in the end.

Police determined that the victims of the incident were between ages 9 and 78.

Detectives were “working tirelessly, with diligence and professionalism, to find the answer to all of those questions,” according to Assistant Chief Constable Sims, who was aware that many people had questions about the incident.

Partick Thistle name Wilson as new head coach

SNS

Mark Wilson has been appointed as Partick Thistle’s permanent manager.

Wilson, 40, replaced Brian Graham as the Under-18s coach in February as the interim manager.

Despite thistle’s championship rivals granting him permission to speak with the Firhill club last week, Dougie Imrie is still there despite Graham’s involvement in the promotion.

Former Dunfermline boss James McPake and former Celtic defender Paul Caddis, who is now in charge of Hereford, were reportedly in conversation with Ian Baraclough, the new Jags director of football.

It has taken us longer than we anticipated to make this announcement, especially given the high level of rumors this week, according to Thistle Chairman Richard Beastall, who also understands that supporters will be upset.

“We think Mark would make a good match for Partick Thistle,” the company said. His expertise and commitment to advancing our own talent were evident in his leadership on the training field, in the dressing room, and during matches, which contributed to a memorable season-end.

We always understood that Mark would be a significant component of our future goals throughout the entire process.

Wilson described his appointment as “I’m really pleased to be the head coach at Partick Thistle and I can’t wait to start.” I’m looking forward to a busy summer, but it will be a busy one.

The morning after the Scottish Premiership play-off semi-final defeat, Graham left as manager of Thistle’s women’s team.

The striker expressed doubts about his ability to stay at the club if he and interim co-manager Wilson did not become permanent.

When Kris Doolan left the Scottish Women’s Premier League team in February, the 37-year-old assumed the position alongside Wilson. She was then appointed manager of the Scottish Women’s Premier League team.

Doolan left Thistle after two years in charge, leaving the Jags, who are currently fourth in the division and have lost three of their previous four games.

Soap star Danny Miller has issued a devastating message as he was forced to settle confusion around his dad. The actor, who is best known for playing Aaron Dingle on Emmerdale, previously spoke about his father’s dementia diagnosis.

He has shared updates on his dad Vince Miller, 90, from the care home in Manchester where he now lives. Earlier this week, Danny made an appearance on Loose Women where he spoke about Vince, whose career included working as a VIP host at Manchester United.

The TV star claimed in an interview that “my dad is missing. And I find it difficult to handle because I truly, truly miss him.

Danny felt the need to clarify his statement after receiving numerous fan messages of support from other fans. He sent a message with the message “Hey guys!

I just feel the need to mention that my father is still with us a lot. I’ve lost my dad, which would mean that I lost the person he was to dementia.

Danny continued, “I’m sorry for anyone’s confusion and/or upset if something goes wrong. However, despite having a terrible illness, Big Vince continues to live. “Lots of love x.

Denise Welch claimed to have known Vince for a long time on Loose Women. He’s a great comic and a great friend, but I’m aware that you’ve been honest about his current dementia state.

I’m thinking of you because I know it’s difficult, Denise continued, “I just want you to give him my love and our love.” Like when you say you’re grieving someone before they actually leave.

Danny responded, “Yes, thanks for that Denise, and I’ll absolutely pass on your message]”… I’m hoping he’s watching while returning to his care facility in Manchester. I did request that the incredible care staff put it on so he could enjoy a few extra 15 minutes of fame before he’s even had one.

The actor said, “My dad is the reason I’m in this business,” in reference to Vince. I’ve lost my dad, in actuality. And I find it difficult to handle because I really, really miss him. “Danny, after clearing his throat, continued: “Please excuse me.

He continued, “I really miss picking up the phone from him.” Simply put, it is no longer possible. And there are also times when we get good and bad visits to him when we visit him in the care home.

“I feel bad that I can no longer pick up my dad’s phone. And I always want to make sure that those who are delaying dementia, whether first- or second-hand, are not at risk.

Danny said, “It’s a terrible, horrible, terminal illness, and it’s a long goodbye. A fantastic short film about that is difficult to watch, but I’m so in love with my father and am talking to you today. If you’re watching, I’d like you to love you, dad.
