‘Betrayal’ or ‘win-win’?: Britain’s EU deal reopens old wounds

London, United Kingdom — British Prime Minister Keir Starmer proudly described a new agreement with the European Union that covers defense, security, and trade as a “win-win” pact that puts the country “back on the international stage”.

The deal announced on May 19 has sparked a sigh of relief for some and stinging criticism for others, underscoring how divided the nation is still is by the force of Brexit. Nine years later, Britain narrowly voted in favor of leaving the EU.

While many members of British society have praised the agreement, Reform UK MP Richard Tice responded with the phrase “Betrayal.” ”

The agreement also offers discounts for British citizens applying for European visas, shorter airport line lines, and possibly less expensive food in the UK. However, the UK has agreed to extend the 12-year extension of European fishing fleets’ access to British waters.

On August 17, 2022, shoppers in a London supermarket purchased food. According to PM Starmer, he anticipates a drop in food prices as a result of the EU-to-EU agreement.

The ‘best news in nine years’

Those who are delighted include Phil Rusted, the owner of the Suffolk-based Practical Plants business that imports plants from Europe.

According to him, this is the best news we have received in nine years. It almost brings us back to the situation before Brexit. In order to grow my business, I can take on more staff. The last few years have been very unpredictable; I’ll know more accurately what my expenses will be. ”

Overall, the overall business sector has largely accepted the agreement.

Trade agreements, even if they are comparatively minor, are generally good news in a world where higher US tariffs are threatening to reverse globalization, according to Philip Shaw, chief economist at Investec Bank. The food industry will gain from a decrease in border checks, which could significantly lower exporters’ and importers’ costs. ”

The EU agreement, according to the Federation of Small Businesses, was praised for “untangling the rules for small exporters of plant and animal products,” calling it “genuine progress.”

Small businesses have been bearing the burden of erratic customs regulations and bureaucracy, which have sapped confidence and ambition for too long, it said.

Additionally, it appears that the agreement is backed by popular opinion in the UK. According to YouGov poll results, 66 percent of people want to be more connected to the EU, compared to just 14 percent who do not.

Certain experts agree that the UK must also compromise. According to Paul Dales, chief economist at Capital Economics, “the devil in a trade deal is always in the details.” Dales remarked that the UK has consented to the EU’s request to grant him access to British waters for fishing, as well as agreeing to pay an unspecified “appropriate financial contribution” to join the European Court of Justice’s jurisdiction.

The UK and EU’s new agreement increases by 12 years the number of fish that the EU’s fishing fleets can access British waters.

Nothing returns, not of any value.

However, there has also been a lot of backlash against the agreement.

The agreement offers the best chance for growth for the fishing industry and coastal communities, according to the National Federation of Fishermen’s Organizations, according to a statement released on May 19.

The deal, according to a more incisive statement issued three days later, “drags UK fishing back into a past we thought had been left behind”.

Shaw acknowledged that the fishing sector stood “at the other end of the scale” if the deal had brought in significant benefits for the food industry.

Additionally, there are other occupations. A wider debate has also been sparked by the deal, which seeks to re-establish whether the UK is breaking the terms of the Brexit deal.

In a post on X, former prime minister Boris Johnson, who led Britain’s formal withdrawal from the EU in 2020, described the deal as an “appalling sell out.”

That’s the opinion of Tony Gabana, a London-based web developer who was too young to cast a ballot in 2016.

Whether or not it is a good deal, Gabana said, “It does seem to attempt to change what a lot of people voted for.” It doesn’t fit my style, I said. No one voted in favor of any further concessions, either.

McGovern joins Shamrock Rovers from Dungannon Swifts

Inpho

John McGovern has been signed by Irish Premiership side Dungannon Swifts, according to League of Ireland Premier Division leaders Shamrock Rovers.

The 22-year-old striker has an undisclosed transfer fee to Rovers.

McGovern played a key role in Dungannon’s successful 2024-25 season, which saw them finish fourth in the league and win the Irish Cup by beating Cliftonville 4-3 on penalties after the game ended 1-1 after extra-time, ensuring the Stangmore Park outfit won European football.

The former Northern Ireland Under-21 international and Newry City frontman scored the match’s opener and made 14 league starts for Rodney McAree’s team out of 29 starts.

The Dublin club’s statement on Tuesday read, “The club agreed a transfer fee with Dungannon Swifts, which will remain undisclosed.”

“This transfer is subject to international and domestic clearance, which will allow John to be selected from July 1 to July 1st, 2025,” according to the statement.

“John has attracted a lot of interest in recent months, but he has fully embraced his desire to play for Shamrock Rovers.”

Manager Stephen Bradley stated on the Shamrock Rovers club website that McGovern was on his mind for “more than a year.”

We watched John quite a bit, we were up. Over the past year, we have made numerous attempts to get him, but it was in vain.

At the time, Dungannon weren’t ready to sell because John was in college. So, it was just a matter of keeping an eye on John, which we thankfully have in place right away.

We could have moved in on other players in the previous window because we had been keeping tabs on John for a while. We really like what he’s about, and he fits the group. We patiently waited, and the task is now complete.

McGovern stated on the club’s website that making the move was “a no-brainer.”

“I’m utterly delighted. The largest club in the country, it is massive. You examine the success of Shamrock Rovers throughout the club’s history in recent years.

“I want to leave the club’s legacy,” the club president said. “I want to win medals.

‘I think I deserve a diploma’ – Norrie stuns Medvedev

Reuters

French Open 2025

Location: Roland Garros, May 25 – June

In the first round of the French Open, world number 11 Daniil Medvedev defeated British player Cameron Norrie, who won one of his best victories of the year.

Norrie had lost all four of his previous matches against Medvedev, including a meeting in Rome earlier in May, against a top-20 player since January 2024.

The Russian repeatedly switched from being angry to dialled in as he forced a fifth set, which the world number 81 did brilliantly but had to withstand a Medvedev comeback.

In less than four hours, Norrie came back from a setback in the decisive to win 7-5, 6-3, 4-6, 1-6, 7-5.

Medvedev was unable to hold off Norrie, who won three games in a row to claim victory in the fifth game, which ended the match at 5-4.

After a protracted Medvedev forehand, Norrie celebrated by launching his racquet into the air.

Norrie, 28, said, “There wasn’t much on my mind at match point.”

“I thought he was a little tentative, but to be honest, it was a crazy match,” he said.

Because he has already defeated me four times, I believe I deserve a diploma for beating Medvedev. It was a dreamlike match.

Federico Gomez will face the Briton in the third round, beating the Argentine who was fortunate to lose.

Medvedev will claim at almost every opportunity that clay is not his preferred surface, but Norrie, who was outstanding, is not in doubt of that fact.

He continued to play well in the rallies with the defensive Medvedev, hitting with depth and particularly pummelling his forehand.

He had a bad first set, but Medvedev made a comeback as he stayed put while serving for it, as the Russian did once more at the conclusion of the match.

In the second, Norrie took the lead, with Medvedev yelling at his coach in French and frequently gesticulating to his box.

Before Medvedev found his focus, cutting out the theatrics and racing through two sets to force a decider, brave hitting gave Norrie a two-set lead.

All the energy was with Medvedev, who had broken Norrie in the third game, but a service game that had caused him to lose gave the initiative back to him.

As his former personal assistant and Cassie’s confidant appear on the witness stand, P Diddy’s trial is in its third week.

This week’s third week of the case is underway. In addition to being subject to a number of serious charges, Digby, 55, is currently facing racketeering conspiracy, sex trafficking with deadly force, fraud or coercion, and prostitution transportation.

He was detained in September, and he categorically refutes all the allegations made against him. Since his arrest, he has been imprisoned, and several bail applications have been rejected.

Rapper Kid Cudi claimed that a Molotov cocktail, which is a hand-thrown bomb filled with flammable liquid, had caused his Porsche to burn.

Regina Ventura, Cassie’s mother, also testified elsewhere. She claimed to fear for her daughter and that she took out a loan to pay Combs because she was concerned for her safety. Along with Kerry Morgan, Diddy’s former friend, and his former assistant, David James, gave testimony.

Why is today’s court case continuing?

Those following the case may not understand why the trial will resume today (Tuesday) rather than on May 26.

Due to the longer pause the court case in the United States took over Memorial Day weekend, it will resume on Tuesday rather than Monday as usual.

recap of the previous week

P Diddy’s case was just in its second week last week. The mothers of Kid Cudi and Cassie Ventura, as well as Regina, gave testimony during that week.

Kid Cudi claimed that his car was on fire one morning in January 2012 after being called by his dog watcher. Kid Cudi claimed that the photo of the top of my Porsche “was cut open, and that’s where the Molotov cocktail was put in” after it was shown in court.

He claimed that the car couldn’t be recovered. Kid Cudi and Combs met after the incident when they were standing by themselves. According to him, “Combs was standing there staring out the window with his hands behind his back, like a Marvel supervillain.”

He claimed (Department of Justice) that the vehicle couldn’t be salvaged.

Kate Middleton has been making more and more appearances over the past few months, and of course, she always has her impeccable style in mind (most recently, her forest green Victoria Beckham suit and her polka-style polka dress).

On another recent trip to Mull in Scotland, the Princess of Wales opted for a chic countryside look: a blue button-up shirt, tweed blazer (her one is the Double-Breasted Blazer from Holland Cooper), brown skinny trousers, and chunky brown boots.

Boden’s Blue Longline 100% Linen Safari Shirt, which Kate appeared to be wearing, is available in sizes 8 to 18 despite being priced at £98. Additionally, you can currently save 15% off using the JM7D coupon, which makes it even better. That reduces the cost by more than £15 to £83.40.

This shirt, which is made of airy 100% linen, is the ideal way to look smart and chic while surviving the summer. Linen can often appear too casual and unprofessional, but this one is different.

Claudia Winkleman demonstrates the ideal lightweight cardigan for cooler evenings on vacation.

We advise a lighter-toned option for this in the warmer months, like a denim midi skirt, poplin maxi skirt, or straight-leg jeans.

If you’re looking for a floatier, less safari-chic blue linen shirt, Meghan Markle recently wore J.Crew’s best-selling Garçon classic shirt in cotton poplin in the simple yet timeless ‘Blue Eoe’ shade. A great option if you have a bit more budget to spend (although also quite a reasonably-priced buy!).

While Gap’s Blue 100% Linen Oversized Shirt, available for £75 here, is one of those throw-on staples you’ll reach for all summer long. Designed from 100% soft linen, it’s breathable, lightweight, and machine washable, making it the ideal piece to roll up in your suitcase.

Van Dijk praying for supporters injured at parade

Virgil van Dijk, the skipper of Liverpool, expresses his “praying for a quick recovery” for the victims of the car crash that struck the crowd during the club’s trophy parade.

Four children were hurt in a car that struck crowds during the Premier League trophy parade on Monday in central Liverpool, which left about 50 people injured.

A 53-year-old British man from the Liverpool area has since been detained on suspicion of dangerous driving, dangerous driving, and drug driving while in good health.

On social media, Van Dijk wrote, “My thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected.”

“Praying for everyone who has been injured to recover quickly. We are all with you.

At a news conference on Monday, Premier Sir Keir Starmer said, “Liverpool stands together and the entire country stands with them.”

Jurgen Klopp, a former Liverpool manager, said the incident “should have been one of the greatest days in the city’s history.”

The German added: “It just showed the two faces of life,” he said on Tuesday following his induction into the League Managers Association Hall of Fame 1, 000 Club.

The parade was incredible, the mood incredible, and the face was “the most beautiful for a long time.”

“And from one second to the next, everything changed,” and we came to the conclusion that football is one of the world’s more serious issues.

The injured and their families are also in our thoughts and prayers.

Kenny Dalglish, an ex-Liverpool manager and player, described the incident as “shocked, horrified, and deeply saddened.”

Billy Hogan, the CEO of Liverpool, said, “I would like to express our sincere condolences to all those who have been affected by this terrible incident.

“This weekend was one of celebration, emotion, and joy spread throughout the city in our entire fanbase, and it ended in unfathomable scenes of distress with this abhorrent incident.”

On Monday during the bank holiday, thousands of Liverpool supporters gathered on the side’s streets to celebrate their Premier League victory.

The parade was held on Water Street, but traffic was prevented there.

However, eyewitnesses claimed that the vehicle disregarded “road closed” warnings.

Around ten minutes after the bus carrying Liverpool’s players, staff, and the Premier League trophy had left, the car slammed into the supporters.

Police claim that the incident is not connected to terrorism.
