Former Little Mix singer Jade Thirlwall has made a huge announcement about her solo career just over two months after landing her first BRIT Award

Jade Thirlwall has announced that she will be releasing her first solo album later this year

Jade Thirlwall has announced the release of her debut solo album, which marks one of the biggest milestones in her personal career since her former band Little Mix went on hiatus.

The 32-year-old singer took to Instagram to share the news with fans, posting: “THAT’S SHOWBIZ BABY! My debut album out 12th September.” The announcement was accompanied by a striking image of what appears to be her album artwork, which features Jade in four different outfits and poses.

This career move comes after Jade has already spent a decade in the spotlight after rising to fame as part of Little Mix, the four-member girl group that was formed on The X Factor in 2011.

The band went on to become one of the UK’s most successful girl groups, clinching number one singles, Brit Awards, and touring internationally. After the band went on hiatus in May 2022, Jade kicked off her career as a solo artist.

The artist has teased that her debut record will feature A-list artists such as RAYE, Lostboy, and Pablo Bowman. Jade will also kick off her first UK and Ireland tour in October.

She told fans: “This album has been years in the making, so I’m beyond excited that I can finally let everyone know when it’s coming out. I’m very proud of ‘THAT’S SHOWBIZ BABY!’ as a body of work and can’t wait to share it with the world. To be able to perform the album live later this year is also a dream come true. See you all on tour!”

Although she has received support from music aficionados who are delighted by her new music, Jade has recently spoken about the more challenging aspects of being in the public eye in an interview for ITV’s The Assembly. The programme features questions from autistic, neurodivergent, and learning-disabled interviewers, one of whom quizzed Jade about what specific pressures she faces as a woman in the music industry.

The singer responded: “I’m going to be very honest about this. The thing that annoys me the most, and I get asked the most, is if I’m going to have children, do I want to be pregnant next? Am I pregnant? But I find it really weird people ask that because they don’t know what my circumstances are.”

She continued, “You don’t know if someone can’t have children, or just doesn’t want to, or isn’t ready yet. I think it’s a really invasive question and I really resent being asked it.”

Jade also opened up about the public scrutiny she has recently faced over her appearance, saying, “I’ve maybe put on a bit of weight since I’ve become a solo artist and because of that people speculate a lot like, ‘Is she pregnant?’ and I’m like, guys, I’ve just had a bit of garlic bread. I’m bloated. Do you know what I mean?”

While reflecting on her early years in the music industry, Jade admitted that she used to feel like she had “sold her soul,” adding: “But as the years have gone by I’ve learned more and more about the industry. I’ve been collecting – a bit like Thanos with the stones – I’ve been collecting parts of my soul back.”

Reddit founder Ohanian buys £20m stake in Chelsea women

Reddit founder Alexis Ohanian has bought a stake in Women’s Super League champions Chelsea.

Ohanian, who is the husband of American tennis star Serena Williams, will have a seat on the club’s board after purchasing a 10% share, believed to be worth £20m.

In a post to X, Ohanian said: “I’ve bet big on women’s sports before, and I’m doing it again.

“I’m proud to announce that I’m joining Chelsea as an investor and board member. I’m honored for the chance to help this iconic club become every American’s favorite WSL team and much, much more.”

He also posted images of Chelsea kits with the names of his children, Olympia and Adira, on the backs.

Ohanian, who also owns shares in the TGL Golf League, founded social media giant Reddit and has an estimated net worth of $150 billion.

His £20m investment puts the value of Chelsea women at £200m, which was the value placed on the club when Chelsea FC Holdings sold the team to a sister company earlier this year to help the Blues adhere to profit and sustainability rules.

It marks the latest boardroom change for Chelsea, who recently appointed Aki Mandhar as their first dedicated chief executive officer for the women’s team.

Earlier this month, Chelsea won their sixth consecutive WSL title. They became the first side to finish a 22-game campaign unbeaten and set a new league record of 60 points.

They also won the Women’s League Cup in March and are going for a domestic treble when they meet Manchester United in the Women’s FA Cup final at Wembley on Sunday.

Briatore heads Alpine in Italy – but not as team principal

Getty Images

Flavio Briatore heads into this weekend’s Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix at the helm of the embattled Alpine team – but he is not team principal, an employee or even a licence holder in Formula 1.

Alpine’s former team principal, Briton Oliver Oakes, resigned on 6 May, citing “personal reasons”.

Briatore, who is employed on a consultancy basis by parent company Renault, is “covering the duties previously performed by Oakes”, Alpine has said.

But it has emerged he is not the person responsible for the team in the eyes of governing body the FIA.

He cannot be – because he is not a member of staff, and does not hold an F1 licence, as is required of people in such authority by the FIA’s competitor’s staff registration system.

In the absence of a new team principal, racing director Dave Greenwood is the “dedicated responsible person”, an Alpine spokesperson said.

Greenwood rejoined Alpine in January from Oakes’ HiTech organisation. He had previously been at Ferrari, Manor/Marussia, and Renault, where he worked under Briatore.

Asked why Briatore is not a staff member or licence holder, an Alpine spokesperson said: “Flavio came into the team as executive adviser and remains a consultant. There’s nothing more to it, or to read into it.”

An FIA spokesperson said: “Alpine have complied with all regulatory requirements relating to the departure of Mr Oakes, and have submitted their updated staff registration.

“We believe it is down to Alpine to provide an update on their management structure so we will not comment on any specific person holding a certificate of registration.”

Briatore remains the de facto boss of Alpine F1, with ultimate authority under Renault Group chief executive officer Luca de Meo.

The 75-year-old Italian was brought in last summer to turn the team’s ailing fortunes around.

It was a controversial appointment.

Briatore led two previous guises of this team to a total of four world-title doubles – two as Benetton in 1994-95 with Michael Schumacher, and two as Renault in 2005-06 with Fernando Alonso.

But he is notorious for his involvement in the so-called ‘crash-gate’ scandal, when Nelson Piquet Jr deliberately crashed his Renault during the 2008 Singapore Grand Prix as part of a plan to advantage team-mate Alonso, who went on to win the race.

The plot did not become public knowledge until a year later, when Briatore was given an indefinite ban from the sport by the FIA.

This was overturned by a French court in 2010, but Briatore had had no active involvement in F1 since, other than as a behind-the-scenes managerial adviser to Alonso.

What is the FIA staff registration system?

Teams have to submit their proposals for the identity of six “main members” of staff to the FIA for approval – a team principal, sporting director, technical director, team manager and two race engineers.

The so-called competitor’s staff registration system, which is designated under the FIA practice directions, is in place to “preserve and protect the FIA Formula 1 World Championship”.

The FIA has the right to refuse a certificate of registration if someone is “under a disciplinary sanction” or “in breach of the FIA code of good standing”.

These decisions are subject to appeal.

The FIA lists a series of examples “which might constitute an infringement of this code”.

South-East PDP Threatens To Leave Party Over Ude-Okoye

The South-East Zonal Executive Committee (ZEC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has threatened to review its relationship with the party if its recommendation of Sunday Ude-Okoye as national secretary is not honoured.

The body made this known at the end of its meeting held at the government house, Enugu, the capital of Enugu State on Wednesday.

While reading out the communique, the zonal chairman, Ali Odefa, said that the South-East has consistently served as a stronghold of the PDP with unalloyed loyalty to the party since inception and even as members in other regions continue to defect.

The group also want the National Working Committee to uphold its decision and ensure that the Deputy National Secretary of the PDP functions as the Acting National Secretary pending the ratification of the nominee for the Office of the National Secretary by NEC in line with the recommendations of the PDP Governors’ Forum as adopted by the NWC.

“The South East ZEC exhaustively deliberated on the directive of the NWC and came to the conclusion that it offered a sure pathway to peace, unity, stability, and progress of our party. Consequently, the ZEC unanimously recommended Hon. Sunday Udeh-Okoye as the candidate to complete the term of office of the National Secretary.”

The South-East caucus threatened to reconsider its continued membership in the party if its position is further delayed, despite its longstanding loyalty to the PDP.

“The South East has consistently served as a stronghold of the PDP from inception. In PDP’s near three-decade existence, we have given our loyalty and all to the party.

“Currently, while the party has been losing key members post-2023 general elections, the South East PDP is at the vanguard of strengthening the Party by rallying major opposition figures such as in Enugu where the Labour Party, LP, gubernatorial candidate, two LP House of Representatives Members, numerous members of the House of Assembly, among other stalwarts into the PDP fold.

“Therefore, we hope that this time around, the position of the South East PDP regarding the Office of the National Secretary is accorded the honour and immediacy it deserves. This would bring to a closure to the needless lingering dispute over the matter.

“However, in the event that our position is not promptly implemented by the Party, the South East PDP, as a family, will be compelled to reconsider our relationship with the PDP going forward,” the communique concluded.
