According to the region’s mayor, four people were “very, very ill in hospital” on Tuesday after dozens of people were hurt the night before when a car struck a crowd at Liverpool’s Premier League title parade.

Police said they were not treating the incident as terrorism, but a 53-year-old white British man was reportedly the car’s driver on Monday.

Steve Rotheram, the mayor of the Liverpool City region, stated to BBC Radio that “we are hoping that they will prevail.”

Images of the terrible incident appeared in the morning newspapers.

What ought to have been a jubilant night for the Reds, who were celebrating their 20th English league title, was summed up by headlines like “Horror at Liverpool parade” in The Sun daily and “Carnage at parade” in The Daily Mail.

A dark-colored vehicle swerved through the dense crowds and struck people in its path just as the players’ open-topped bus passed nearby.

Twenty-seven football fans were taken to the hospital, according to emergency personnel in a press conference late in the evening, two of whom had suffered serious injuries.

One seriously hurt one of the four children who were hurt.

‘Horrible’

According to Merseyside Police Assistant Chief Constable Jenny Sims, “We think this is an isolated incident, and we are not currently looking for anyone else in relation to it.”

She continued, “The incident is not being treated as terrorism.”

In torrential rain, hundreds of thousands of people showed up for the victory parade in the northwest of England.

Just moments before the team’s bus struck the crowd on Water Street, according to witnesses, the bus had already passed nearby.

Harry Rashid, 48, a resident of Solihull, close to Birmingham, central England, who was present with his wife and two young daughters, said, “It was very fast.

He told reporters that “we just initially heard the pop, pop, pop of people just being knocked off the car’s bonnet.”

You could hear his bumps as he passed over the people, he said.

Remarkable bravery

In a large, blue tent that had been set up on the street, twenty more people received treatment for their injuries at the scene.

According to Nick Searle, chief fire officer for Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service, four people were trapped beneath the vehicle and had to be taken out.

The “remarkable bravery shown by the police and other emergency services” was commended by Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

In a statement, he stated that “the entire country stands with Liverpool and that they are supporting and caring for those injured in these terrible events.”

As police attempted to stop the car, angry fans stormed the back windows and sprayed the vehicle’s interior with blood.

Before the Premier League title, Liverpool’s supporters had already been a sea of red as they crowded the city’s streets to celebrate with Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk, manager Arne Slot.

Liverpool FC stated on X that they were working with Merseyside police, adding that “Our thoughts and prayers are with those who have been affected by this serious incident.”

Liverpool’s rivals on the Merseyside, Everton, added that the club’s “thoughts are with all those who have been affected by this serious incident in our city.”

Tragic events have ruined Liverpool’s football history.

In a crush at a game at the Sheffield Hillsborough stadium in 1989, 97 Liverpool fans died.

The worst sporting disaster in British history, which still afflicts the port city, also left more than 760 people dead.

Lorraine Kelly refused ‘insulting’ offer to merge her show with GMB amid cuts

https://i2-prod.mirror.co.uk/incoming/article35285906.ece/ALTERNATES/s615/4_Lorraine-TV-show-London-UK-19-May-2025.jpg

Lorraine Kelly has, since 2010, presented her self-titled show on ITV, part of the network’s morning schedule – but the programme will be cut by 30 minutes from January

Lorraine Kelly reportedly declined an offer by ITV to make merge her daytime show with Good Morning Britain (GMB).

The proposal would have given the TV veteran the opportunity to present the final 30 minutes of GMB, it is understood. As the same format was adopted during the COVID-19 pandemic, bosses reportedly saw the merge as an “easy fix”.

But sources have revealed Lorraine, 65, was “insulted” by the suggestion and told bigwigs it wasn’t a possibility, resulting in the reduced runtime of her show from an hour to 30 minutes. It is one of several changes ITV is making to its daytime schedule, including slashing Loose Women from 52 weeks of the year to just 30 – a cut Lorraine also faces.

Lorraine was pulled into a meeting last week with bosses, and it seems that while there are concerns, she remains focused on her show. A source told the Mirror: “We were very open about the challenges in the industry and so several options were discussed – the key was ensuring Lorraine was retained and was as comfortable as possible in a changing landscape. Her show is still hugely valued – the show recently had its highest audience share in 4 years and still reaches 2.7 million people.”

Sources claim that the Scottish star will have to “pull out all the stops” for it to survive. It was announced last week that the programme had been affected by the major shake-up at ITV. It will now air for 30 weeks of the year, rather than all year round. And the duration of the programme has been cut from an hour to just half an hour.

A source said: “Lorraine was not happy about what is happening and also had concern for the production team which will be cut back too. But the truth is she has to roll her sleeves up and work harder on her own show than she has in recent years, otherwise the long-term future does not look good.”

“Lorraine was pulled into a meeting with bosses where she was told about Good Morning Britain being taken over by ITN ahead of the public announcement,” an insider told Mail Online.

The source added: “It was proposed that her show would merge with GMB so that she presented the last 30 minutes of the broadcast, which is what happened when a reduced team were working during lockdown.

“But she told them no and said it wasn’t even a possibility… fast-forwarded two weeks and the channel announced her show would be cut from an hour to 30 minutes… The entire thing has been an insult and she’s certain to leave when the year-long contract ends.”

It was confirmed on Tuesday Lorraine, This Morning, and Loose Women will relocate from Television Centre to a new filming location, where they plan to share the same studio. There will be limited time between each show so changing the sets may not be an option, as the output of the programmes will likely suffer, it is now claimed.

A source added: “In January, Lorraine, This Morning and Loose Women are moving from Television Centre to a central London location, rumoured to be the Hospital Club in Covent Garden. All three shows will share the same studio, meaning sets will be massively reduced to save space and money.

“At present, This Morning broadcasts from a huge studio within Television Centre and Lorraine and Loose Women share one space. Lorraine’s set is flipped once they come off air and Loose Women is put in but the new set up is thought to involve all the shows sharing one space with no set flips in between.”

The Mirror has contacted ITV for further comment on the claims bosses tried to reach a deal with Lorraine, a Scottish broadcaster who has presented various television shows for ITV and STV since 1988.

Sawyers delighted to return after 20-month absence

Getty Images

“It’ll be a long road, but I’m ready to work hard,” said Great Britain long jumper Jazmin Sawyers when sharing the painful news of her Achilles rupture last April.

The injury, which ruled her out of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, came just over a year after her best moment in the sport to-date.

Her ecstatic celebrations produced memorable images as she won the 2023 European Indoor title, jumping a UK indoor record of 7.00 metres in the process.

The 31-year-old finally competed again this month after a 20-month absence, leaping to 6.53m at the Loughborough International Athletics Meeting.

“It felt so, so good. I was more nervous than I can remember being for a competition,” Sawyers told BBC Radio Stoke.

“My heart rate was high all day. Since the minute I woke up, I wasn’t able to be calm.

“But, just to get back and still feel like myself, to be jumping a kind of distance that I have opened with in any other normal season, I’m so pleased,” she added.

Sawyers, a finalist at Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020, did make it to a third Olympics, last summer – but as a television commentator for the BBC.

While her enthusiasm and expertise alongside regular contributors like Steve Backley and Jeanette Kwakye won high praise, it was certainly not her first-choice role.

‘We’re back in long jump business’

Earlier this month, Sawyers said she was back to full speed and strength in the last of a series of videos that she nicknamed “The Achilles Diaries”.

On Saturday, she rubber-stamped her return, improving her 2025 best to 6.66 in Weinheim in Germany.

The qualifying standard for September’s World Athletics Championships in Tokyo is 6.86m, but she could still be considered for a place with 6.75m if she is high enough in the world rankings.

“At the minute, I’m unranked because I haven’t done five competitions in the last year, so I’ve just got to build that back up and hopefully make my way back to my best,” she said.

Her injury left her unable to defend her European Indoor title in Apeldoorn in March, or contest the World Indoors in Nanjing later that month, but Sawyers is encouraged by those who competed in her absence.

“We’re having a real moment with long jump. There was a year or two where we didn’t have multiple athletes fighting for spots,” she said.

“But we’re back in long jump business and so many of the women are brilliant athletes. Molly Palmer is due a huge jump, the same with Alice Hopkins.”

Palmer beat Sawyers to gain victory in Loughborough, while Hopkins made her major championship debut in Apeldoorn.

“We’re going to keep seeing these athletes jump further,” Sawyers added.

Thunder-Timberwolves: SGA scores 40 as OKC win Game 4 in NBA West finals

In Game 4 of the Western Conference finals in Minneapolis, the Oklahoma City Thunder defeated the Minnesota Timberwolves, who had 40 points, nine rebounds, and 10 assists.

Oklahoma City, which held the best-of-seven series to a 3-1 lead, added 34 points on 13-for-24 shooting. On 9-for-14 shooting, Chet Holmgren added 21 points.

In the final fifteen seconds of the game, Gilgeous-Alexander sank five of the six free throws to win on Monday night.

Off the bench, Minnesota led with 23 points. Donte DiVincenzo finished with 21 points off the bench, including Jaden McDaniels, who scored 22 points.

On Wednesday night, the Thunder will return to Oklahoma City for Game 5, where they will have the chance to wrap up the series and advance to the NBA Finals.

In the final moments, the Thunder and Timberwolves battled it out.

With 3:34 left, Gilgeous-Alexander showed his athleticism when he found Williams for a 3-pointer from the left wing. The 6-foot-6 inch guard slipped a pass between McDaniels’ legs to the open Williams while he was falling on the field.

With 1:11 remaining, the Thunder were able to extend their lead to seven when Williams hit a third 3-pointer.

In Game 4, Minnesota Timberwolves All-Star guard Anthony Edwards (Centre) shot 5-for-16 from the field and added 16 points.

With 1:10 left, McDaniels made a powerful layup and the Timberwolves won with a 3-pointer with 23.1 seconds left. The Thunder’s lead was sliced by the latter hoop, 123-121.

In the final seconds, both teams exchanged free throws.

With 3.5 seconds left, the Thunder were 128-125 before Anthony Edwards reached the free-throw line. With 0.33 seconds left, Edwards made the first attempt, but he intentionally missed the second attempt, but Gilgeous-Alexander chased down the rebound and fired a long pass out of bounds to put a stop to the clock.

As time ran out, Williams intercepted Julius Randle’s inbound pass.

At the conclusion of the third quarter, Oklahoma City held a 90-85 lead.

With five minutes left in the third half, the Timberwolves cut their deficit to 77-76 with an 8-0 run. To end the run, DiVincenzo buried a 3-pointer from the left.

With 4:41 remaining in the quarter, Gilgeous-Alexander knocked down a jump shot to give his team a 79-76 lead.

At the half, Minnesota had a 65-57 lead. Before the break, Edwards finished the game with 16 points on 5-for-13 shooting. Only one of his seven 3-point attempts was made.
