‘Class of 92’ graduates aim for more Crucible glory

At a combined age of 99, two of snooker’s all-time greats go head-to-head on Tuesday as John Higgins takes on Mark Williams with a place in the World Championship semi-finals up for grabs.

The sport’s legendary ‘Class of 92’, with Ronnie O’Sullivan completing the trio, have won 14 world titles between them – and are all still going strong this year.

Williams turned 50 last month, Higgins reaches his half century 13 days after this year’s final with O’Sullivan celebrating his 50th birthday in December.

But they have again proved that age is just a number.

‘How are we still here? ‘

Williams has become the oldest man to reach the last eight at the Crucible since six-time winner Steve Davis did so at the age of 52 back in 2010.

But one of Williams’ oldest opponents stands in his way.

“Twenty years ago, we were really big rivals – now we walk into the practice room and we give each other a nod as if to say: ‘How are we still here competing with everybody? ‘” said Higgins.

It is a sentiment Williams agrees with.

“Normally the older you get, the worse you get,” he said. “Your eyes are going, everything is going and your stamina drops a bit and you get tired a lot more easier.

‘Maybe their best ever achievement’

With O’Sullivan in the opposite half of the draw a final between two of the ‘Class of 92’, named after the year they turned professional, is a real possibility.

“If one of those three players was to win the World Championship, maybe beat a young whippersnapper in the final, what an achievement that would be. Maybe their best ever achievement,” said Davis.

Fifteen years ago, Davis defeated Mark King 10-9 in the Crucible first round, won 13-11 against a then-34-year-old Higgins, the reigning champion, before losing 13-5 to eventual winner Neil Robertson in the last eight.

“It was a fantastic buzz, I maybe ran out of belief,” recalled Davis.

The trio’s achievements are legendary. O’Sullivan has seven world titles, Higgins four and Williams three.

If any of them lift the trophy on Monday, 5 May, they would become the oldest winner in the modern era, breaking O’Sullivan’s record when he won it three years ago, aged 46.

Thirty-three years ago they were all hungry, driven, talented teenagers with the desire to reach the top.

Williams described how he first met Higgins at the final of an event in 1990, when they were both 15.

“We played in the final and he beat me,” said the Welshman. “It was live on TV and he beat me 6-1, he had five grand for a win, I had three grand for runner-up.

“We then played in the British Under-16s in Birmingham and I thrashed him 4-0 after 50 minutes and I got 200 quid so I was a week late.

“That was the first time I really remembered John as it was me and O’Sullivan playing in all the junior events when we were 13 and 14. “

Williams and Higgins have their own Crucible history and have met five times, with four victories for Williams, including an 18-16 success in an epic showdown in the 2018 final.

‘As you get older it becomes a lot more difficult’

Ken Doherty, the 1997 world champion, played against the ‘Class of 92’ throughout his career and felt this match was “the tie of the round”.

“They’ve been at the top of the game since 1992, 33 years, and are still at the top and still producing,” the Irishman said.

“As you get older it becomes a lot more difficult as players like me, Stephen Hendry, Alan McManus, Peter Ebdon have all found out. It’s hard to cope in terms of tension, intensity and also to be able to devote your life to the game.

“You become a father, a family man and it’s hard to dedicate themselves to the game but they still have the appetite, willingness and hunger and that’s an incredible talent as well.

“I’ve been logging heads with them for 30 years. I’ve beaten them all but also lost to them all in big finals. I just had great times playing them and you used to relish it as it was a great test of your own game. “

Doherty, who is part of the BBC TV team for the competition, felt the atmosphere would be electric.

“When you see them coming into the Crucible for their match they will get a standing ovation as they did in the Masters,” he added. “We might not see the kind of these three again so we have to enjoy them while we can. They’ve given the sport great entertainment, great matches and are still delivering. “

Shaun Murphy tipped Judd Trump, who beat him 13-10 on Monday, to win the title but thought the Williams-Higgins clash would be “fabulous for the sport”.

He added: “The Class of 92 are three of the best players we’ve ever seen and it’s wonderful we still get to watch them.

World number one Trump will play the winner of Williams-Higgins in the semi-final if he triumphs in his own quarter-final against Luca Brecel.

Trump felt the veteran trio would continue to feature at the top level for years to come.

“They inspired me a little bit, especially Ronnie and John when I younger,” said Trump. “Ronnie was someone I really looked up to. They’re miles away from retiring and not far from their absolute best.

“When I played Williams in the semi-finals (when Trump won a final-frame decider for a 17-16 win in 2022) I’ve never seen him play like that.

Real Madrid’s Ancelotti Agrees Brazil Deal — Reports

Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti has agreed to take over the Brazilian national team, several Spanish media outlets reported Monday.

The veteran Italian has one more year on his contract with the Spanish giants but after quarter-final Champions League elimination by Arsenal and Copa del Rey defeat by rivals Barcelona, is poised to depart the Santiago Bernabeu.

Ancelotti has not hidden that a potential exit was on the cards and said his future was “a topic for the next weeks” after defeat by Barca on Saturday.

Spanish media report Ancelotti would take over ahead of 2026 World Cup qualifiers in June, leaving Madrid before the Club World Cup starts in the United States this summer.

Brazil sacked Dorival Junior after a 4-1 thrashing by Argentina in March and are fourth in the South American qualifying table for the tournament in the US, Mexico and Canada.

Ancelotti led Real Madrid to a Champions League and La Liga double last season, with Brazil stars Vinicius Junior and Rodrygo Goes vital parts of the team, and is one of the most successful coaches in the club’s history.

In his first spell at Real Madrid he led them to La Decima — their 10th Champions League triumph.

He has won the competition three times with Los Blancos over two stints, sacked in 2015 but returning in 2021 after Zinedine Zidane resigned.

This season Madrid have been defensively fragile and trail La Liga leaders Barcelona by four points, with a title defence their only remaining hope of major silverware.

Ancelotti has also coached AC Milan, Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain among other teams.

RuPaul slammed for ‘out of touch’ post after Drag Race star Jiggly Caliente’s death

https://i2-prod.mirror.co.uk/incoming/article35135096.ece/ALTERNATES/s615/0_MAIN-RUPAUL.jpg

RuPaul’s Drag Race stars and fans of the franchise have been paying tribute to Jiggly Caliente – whose real name is Bianca Castro-Arabejo – following the recent news of her death

Fans have been left divided over RuPaul having seemingly not publicly addressed the death of former RuPaul’s Drag Race contestant Jiggly Caliente. Some fans have criticised the TV host for instead posting a skit on social media.

It was announced yesterday that Jiggly – whose real name is Bianca Castro-Arabejo – had died earlier that morning, aged 44. The news came after the late drag artist’s family had shared on social media just days earlier that she had her leg amputated recently due to a “serious infection”. Tributes have since been paid to Jiggly – who rose to fame on RuPaul’s Drag Race in 2012 – before returning for All Stars nine years later.

Drag Race judge Michelle Visage has been among those paying tribute to the late TV star, who had herself been a judge on Drag Race Philippines since 2022.

The official RuPaul’s Drag Race page on Instagram also remembered Jiggly yesterday, saying that she’s a “cherished member” of its family. It’s understood that RuPaul hasn’t yet posted about Jiggly’s death on his personal page though.

Earlier today though, a skit was shared on the page. In the sketch, RuPaul appears to lip sync: “Tell me if this is normal? ” The Drag Race host then mimics cracking his neck as a sound resembling a fart plays out in the audio of the scene. The video concludes with RuPaul pretending to cry.

Fans reacted to the post in the comments section today. One person wrote: “Ru, I love you, but posting this before a statement about Jiggly is so out of touch. ” Another said in their response: “I love you Ru, but you posted this before saying anything about Jiggly? She was one of your own. “

A third follower wrote in their comment: “Hey so this is actually insane to post when one of the queens that made your show just died. Say something. Show some god damn respect. “

Sharing their thoughts, someone else said on the platform: “Y haven’t you said anything yet? It’s weird…” Another fan wrote earlier: “Literally, one of the biggest icons of the franchise just tragically died and this is what you post?!?!”

Others suggested that the post may have been scheduled in advance. One fan said: “I almost feel like these posts have to be pre-scheduled because there hasn’t been any mention of Jiggly. ” Another speculated: “This was most likely a scheduled post. I highly doubt she just filmed this. Give Ru the benefit of the doubt, y’all. “

Whilst others have defended RuPaul. One person said: “Don’t rush Ru to talk about someone let people grieve. Ru always gives some sort of tribute give people time! For now just laugh if you can that’s what Jiggly would have wanted. “

Another wrote: “I understand why people are emotional right now, but I also think it’s important to remember that posting on social media doesn’t define someone’s grief or their relationship to someone who passed. People have gotten so conditioned to expect public displays for private emotions, but true mourning doesn’t have to be performative. “

They added: “RuPaul may choose to honour Jiggly in his own way, privately, and that doesn’t make it any less real or meaningful. Sometimes the demand for a post says more about our need for closure or optics than it does about the people who are actually grieving. Everyone processes loss differently, and I don’t think it’s fair to judge someone’s care based on what they do or don’t post. “

It had been announced last week that Jiggly had been hospitalised due to a “severe infection” before having her right leg amputated. Her family suggested in a statement at the time that she was recovering from the experience.

Her family said in a statement then: “The family of Bianca Castro, known to many as the beloved drag performer Jiggly Caliente, is heartbroken to share that over the last month Bianca has experienced a serious health setback. Due to a severe infection, she was hospitalized and, as a result, has undergone the loss of most of her right leg.

“Because of these circumstances, Bianca will not be appearing in the upcoming season of RuPaul’s Drag Race Philippines, nor will she be participating in any public engagements for the foreseeable future. Her recovery will be extensive. “

They concluded: “At this time, we kindly ask for privacy for Bianca and her family as they navigate this difficult journey together. While Jiggly concentrates on healing, we invite her friends, fans, and community to uplift her with messages of hope and love on her social media channels. Bianca’s family and drag house are deeply grateful for the continued outpouring of support, strength, and prayers. “

It was then announced over the weekend that Jiggly had died. Her family said: “It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of Bianca Castro-Arabejo, known to the world and cherished by many as Jiggly Caliente. Bianca passed away peacefully on April 27, 2025, at 4:42 am, surrounded by her loving family and close friends.

“A luminous presence in the worlds of entertainment and advocacy, Jiggly Caliente was celebrated for her infectious energy, fierce wit, and unwavering authenticity. She touched countless lives through her artistry, activism, and the genuine connection she fostered with fans around the world. “

They concluded: “Her legacy is one of love, courage, and light. Though her physical presence is gone, the joy she shared and the space she helped create for so many will remain forever. She will be deeply missed, always loved, and eternally remembered. In Loving Memory of Bianca Castro-Arabejo (Jiggly Caliente) November 29, 1980 – April 27, 2025. “

The news was met with an outpouring of tributes. The official account for RuPaul’s Drag Race – which, alongside being the host, RuPaul has been an executive producer of – paid tribute on Instagram alongside other colleagues.

Beside a photo of Jiggly, she was described as a “cherished” member of the Drag Race family. The caption read: “We are devastated by the passing of Jiggly Caliente, a cherished member of the Drag Race family. Her talent, truth, and impact will never be forgotten, and her legacy will continue to slay – always. We’re holding her family, friends, and fans close in our hearts during this difficult time. “

Tom Cruise, 62, has been spotted with a Bond Girl, 36, once again amid growing speculation of a romance. The Top Gun actor has been linked to actress Ana de Armas following a string of dates.

They first caught attention on Valentine’s Day where they were seen having dinner together. Tom and Ana have been spotted with each other numerous times since, and reportedly spent their weekend in London. A fan claimed to have seen the Hollywood stars at the cinema in Leicester Square on Sunday. They shared a snap with Tom and said he was accompanied by Ana.

“What a dayyyyy! Watched the best movie of the year (6 sinnersmovie – the hype is real, go watch it! ! ),” they wrote on social media. “Walked out of the toilet to come face to face with @tomcruise and Ana de Armas! “

Tom posted he was at the cinema on Sunday, while Ana liked his upload. He stood with his film ticket for movie Sinners and commented: “Congratulations Ryan, Michael, and to the entire cast and crew. Must see in a cinema and stay through the end credits! “

Ana and Tom first got tongues wagging when they were spotted together in London on Valentine’s Day. The Hollywood A-listers were mobbed by fans for autographs before jumping into a taxi carrying two bags of takeaway food.

At the time, a source told PEOPLE that the stars were at dinner with their agents “discussing potential collaborations down the line”, and noted that the pair “appeared to have no romantic connection, just friends”.

Just a month later, they were seen leaving the Heliport in Battersea, London as they looked relaxed in each other’s company. Tom helped Ana into a waiting helicopter.

Last year, Tom had sparked romance rumours with singer Victoria Canal in August, while Ana was spotted holding hands with stepson of Cuban president, Manuel Anido Cuest in December.

Neither Tom, who shares daughter Isabella, 32, and son Connor, 30, with ex-wife Nicole Kidman and daughter Suri, 18, with ex-wife Katie Holmes, or Ana have commented on their relationship.

Ana has praised Tom’s work though as she labelled his stunt work “mind blowing”. She said: “I totally get why he does it. ”

“It’s demanding and painful and your body is hurting everywhere, but it’s also very rewarding as I saw myself getting better at it,” she told USA Today, adding: “Besides, it’s fun. And if I just go say my lines and someone else does the stunts, I’m missing that fun.”

Despite their lack of romance chat, fans haven’t kept quiet on their thoughts as the pair have fuelled speculation they have become more than just friends or colleagues.

It is thought the duo are working together in a reboot of Days of Thunder. Yet, fans have been left unconvinced their connection is just as work colleagues.

Some have even expressed concern thanks to Tom’s dramatic, headline-grabbing past that has included multiple divorces, auditioned brides, and his Scientology connections.

The Mirror has contacted Tom and Ana’s representatives for comment.

Hezbollah leader says Lebanese gov’t must do more to end Israeli attacks

Hezbollah leader Naim Qassem has called on Lebanon’s government to work harder to end Israel’s daily attacks in the country, a day after an Israeli air strike targeted the southern suburbs of the capital Beirut for the third time since a ceasefire was agreed late last November.

Qassem said in a televised speech on Monday that Hezbollah implemented the ceasefire deal that ended the 14-month war, but Israel has continued to launch relentless air strikes.

Qassem’s comments came as the Israeli military said it carried out more than 50 strikes in Lebanon this month in response, it says, to threats against Israel and Hezbollah allegedly violating the United States-brokered ceasefire.

Rights groups have denounced Israeli attacks on Lebanon, saying they are violating the truce deal.

On Sunday, Israeli warplanes struck Beirut’s southern suburbs after issuing a warning about an hour earlier, marking the third Israeli strike on the area since the November ceasefire. The Israeli military said it struck a precision-guided missiles facility.

‘Put pressure on America’

Following the strike, Lebanese President Joseph Aoun accused Israel of undermining stability in Lebanon and escalating tensions. He said Israeli attacks pose “real dangers to the security” of the region.

“Yesterday, an aggression targeted the southern suburbs of Beirut. This attack lacks any justification … It is a political attack aimed at changing the rules by force,” Qassem said of Sunday’s attack.

“The resistance complied 100 percent with the [ceasefire] deal and I tell state officials that it’s your duty to guarantee protection,” Qassem said, adding that Lebanese officials should contact sponsors of the ceasefire so that they put pressure on Israel to cease its attacks.

“Put pressure on America and make it understand that Lebanon cannot rise if the aggression doesn’t stop,” Qassem said, pointing to Lebanese officials. He added that the US has interests in Lebanon and “stability achieves these interests”.

Qassem said the priority should be for a full Israeli withdrawal from Lebanon, an end to Israeli strikes in the country, and the release of Lebanese people held in Israel since the war officially ended on November 27.

Hezbollah began launching rockets, drones and missiles into Israel the day after its ally Hamas led the October 7, 2023 attack and Israel responded with mass bombardment of Gaza. About 1,200 people in Israel were killed and another 251 others were abducted during the attack in southern Israel.

The war ignited further last September when Israel carried out waves of air strikes across Lebanon and assassinated most of the group’s senior leaders, including Hassan Nasrallah. The fighting killed more than 4,000 people in Lebanon, most of them civilians.
