The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Benue State has condemned what it described as the “barbaric” suppression of peaceful protesters allegedly by the administration of Governor Hyacinth Alia, following fresh killings in the state.

In a statement released on Sunday, the State Publicity Secretary of the APC, Daniel Ihomun, expressed outrage over reports that protesters gathered in mourning and solidarity were allegedly shot at and dispersed on the orders of the state government.

Alia is a member of the APC and was elected on the platform of the party in the 2023 governorship election.

“The All Progressives Congress (APC), Benue State Chapter, under the leadership of Austin Agada, expresses deep sympathy to the resilient people of Benue State who, faced with unrelenting violence and government silence, took to the streets in peaceful protest, only to be met with state-sponsored brutality,” Ihomun said.

He described the incident as “a new low in the governance of” the state, lamenting that the same government elected to protect the people had allegedly turned its guns on them.

“What further proof is needed that the Alia administration has not only failed in its primary duty to protect lives and property but is now complicit in the suffering and silencing of its citizens?” the statement queried.

‘Deliberate Inaction’

The APC further said the ongoing violence in Benue communities had been worsened by the governor’s “deliberate inaction” and “glaring disinterest.”

The party accused the Alia-led government of failing to provide logistical support to security agencies or collaborate with stakeholders to prevent attacks, despite receiving security votes,.

The party also criticised the governor’s alleged dismissive stance on the crisis, citing previous comments where he allegedly referred to the killings as “mere skirmishes” and justified the presence of armed aggressors under ECOWAS protocols.

‘Gov To Blame For Crisis’

“This most recent assault on peaceful protesters marks a dangerous descent into authoritarianism. We hold the governor personally responsible for the worsening crisis and his administration’s silence and complicity,” the APC warned.

The party demanded the immediate release of all arrested protesters and an independent investigation into the alleged shootings, as well as justice for the victims and an end to what it called a “culture of impunity”.

Meanwhile, the attack that sparked the protest occurred on Saturday, when suspected armed herders invaded the Yelwata community in Benue, leaving scores feared dead.

Former vice president and 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar, condemned the killings and urged both state and federal authorities to act swiftly.

“I am deeply anguished and shocked by the devastating news of the fresh attacks in Benue State, where over 100 innocent lives are feared lost. These killings, once again targeting defenceless communities, underscore the escalating insecurity crisis facing our nation,” Atiku said in a statement on X.

He called for a transparent investigation, enhanced security deployments, and support services for affected communities, including medical aid and trauma counselling.

“This is not just a local tragedy; it is a national emergency,” Atiku stated.

Angry Youths Protest

In the wake of the killings, angry youths gathered early Sunday at the Wurukum food basket roundabout in Makurdi to demand justice.

The protesters, joined by social media activist Martin Otse, known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), called out what they described as a lack of response from President Bola Tinubu and Governor Alia.

One of the protesters, Solomon Amande, told journalists that the people were outraged by the silence of those in power.

“Women, children, the elderly – our people are being slaughtered, and there’s no word from the president or our own governor,” he said.

Some youths at the scene of the protest in Benue State after tear gas canisters were fired on Sunday, June 15, 2025.

When the Deputy Governor, Sam Ode, attempted to address the crowd, they reportedly rejected him and insisted that only Governor Alia himself could address their concerns.

The protest escalated as security agents moved in, firing tear gas to disperse the demonstrators.

Meanwhile, Governor Alia, in a statement delivered through his Chief Press Secretary, condemned the Yelwata attack and assured residents that the government was engaging with security agencies and stakeholders to restore calm.

He noted that federal tactical units had been deployed to Benue, and more security reinforcements were expected.

“The state’s joint operations units are also being strengthened, and the government will not relent in its utmost commitment to defending the lives and properties of all residents,” the statement added.

The England men’s and women’s hockey teams both lost Pro League games in London on Sunday to complete a disappointing weekend for the hosts.

The men were beaten 3-2 by Germany, with the women defeated 1-0 by second-placed Argentina.

Two penalty goals from Zach Wallace twice brought the men level in the third quarter against Germany, only for Raphael Hartkopf to score the winner with five minutes remaining.

England’s result means they drop to sixth in the standings, with Germany moving above them and up to fourth.

The teams also met on Saturday when they fought out a 2-2 draw, Germany winning a subsequent penalty shootout to earn a bonus point.

Next up for the men is a double-header against the Netherlands, with the first match on Tuesday at 13:15 BST at Lee Valley.

Agustina Gorzelany’s goal at the start of the second quarter was enough to see England’s women beaten by Argentina, having lost 3-1 to the same opponents on Saturday.

‘I’m tired of you’ – Fritz beats Zverev for Stuttgart title

Alexander Zverev joked he is “tired” of playing Taylor Fritz after losing to him in the Stuttgart Open final – marking his fifth straight defeat by the American.

Fritz beat Germany’s world number three Zverev 6-3 7-6 (7-0) in just one hour 27 minutes to win the title at the grass-court tournament in Germany.

Second seed Fritz won all four of their meetings in 2024, including in the fourth round at Wimbledon and the US Open quarter-finals.

“I’m tired of you, I don’t want to see you over the next two or three years – stay away from me,” Zverev joked after the defeat.

It is a first title of the year for Fritz, who will rise to fourth in the world rankings in time for Wimbledon, which begins on 30 June.

“I’m really happy, especially as it was not too great of a clay season,” said Fritz.

Fritz did not drop serve once on his way to clinching the ATP 250 title.

He took the opening set on Sunday inside 30 minutes when Zverev double-faulted twice and missed a volley at the net.

Zverev then saved the only break point of the second set before Fritz pulled away in a dominant tie-break to win a ninth career title and fourth on grass.

World number three Zverev, 28, is yet to claim a grass-court trophy having now lost three finals on the surface.

Sinner had ‘sleepless nights’ after Alcaraz loss

Elsewhere, world number one Jannik Sinner said he had “a few sleepless nights” after losing to Carlos Alcaraz in the French Open final.

The Italian held three championship points in the third set but lost to world number two Alcaraz in a five set, five-hour epic at Roland Garros.

Sinner will begin his grass-court campaign at the Halle Open on Monday.

“I think every day it gets better,” Sinner said.

“Tennis is important in my life but family and friends are more important.

“I was very relaxed with my family. We grilled a bit, played table tennis with my friends.

“Nonetheless, I think often about the match.”

Sinner will be joined by fellow top-20 players Zverev, Daniil Medvedev and Andrey Rublev in Halle.

Meanwhile two-time defending Wimbledon champion Alcaraz will begin his grass-court season at Queen’s, where he won the title in 2023, along with Britain’s Jack Draper.

Nine of the world’s top 10 women’s players will compete in the Berlin Open, including French Open champion Coco Gauff, world number one Aryna Sabalenka and world number three Jessica Pegula.

The Nigeria Police Force has recovered multiple stolen vehicles trafficked across international borders to neighbouring West African countries, following a series of coordinated operations through the INTERPOL National Central Bureau (NCB), Abuja.

This was disclosed in a statement on Sunday by Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, who confirmed that the vehicles were successfully traced, recovered, and repatriated through international law enforcement collaboration.

According to the statement, operatives of the INTERPOL National Central Bureau (NCB) Abuja, working closely with the INTERPOL NCB Accra, recovered a 2020 model Toyota Prado in Accra, Ghana.

The vehicle, which belongs to a federal government agency in Nigeria, was stolen during a robbery incident in Abuja.

Three suspects were arrested in Ghana and subsequently charged in court in Accra. The vehicle has since been returned to Nigeria and formally handed over to the affected agency.

“In a related development, the Nigeria Police Force is currently finalising efforts to recover and repatriate two additional vehicles – a Toyota Land Cruiser SUV and a Toyota Land Cruiser Prado SUV – stolen in Abuja in May 2025 and later sold in Niamey, Niger Republic,” the statement added.

The Force has encouraged Nigerians to register their vehicles on the Police Electronic Platforms and to take necessary precautions to improve the chances of recovery in the unfortunate event of theft.

Hamilton Accies Women have been ordered by owners of the town’s men’s club to change their name and branding, just weeks after sealing promotion to the Scottish Women’s Premier League.

In a letter to the club from Hamilton Academical’s board of directors, the women’s side have been told to stop using the intellectual property of the men’s club, who have been relegated to Scottish League 1.

The move comes after the women’s club confirmed their intention to remain at New Douglas Park, in contrast to the men who are attempting to move to Broadwood Stadium, 15 miles away in Cumbernauld, following a dispute with the stadium owner.

In a club statement on social media, Accies Women said: “Following our title-winning campaign in SWPL2 and promotion to the top flight, securing a stadium that meets elite-level standards was a key priority.

Hamilton Academical FC have announced their intention to form a new women’s side and academy set-up – ending their affiliation with the current women’s team.

In a social media post, Accies Women wrote: “We are surprised and disappointed to see an attempt being made to ban Hamilton Accies Women from using the club badge – something that has been part of our identity for over a decade.

“Since 2013, we’ve had a long-standing and formally recognised agreement with the previous owners of Hamilton Academical FC, allowing us to use the club name and badge in perpetuity. This agreement reflects our deep-rooted commitment to representing the town of Hamilton with pride, integrity and ambition.
