Wales full-back Liam Williams has been signed to a one-year contract by the Newcastle Red Bulls.
The 34-year-old had a stint training with his former club Cardiff after leaving Saracens at the end of last season.
Since being injured in Wales’ defeat by France in their Six Nations opener on January 31st, he hasn’t played competitive football.
As Newcastle enters a period of new ownership, Williams described it as “an exciting time to be joining them,” which is reflected in the team’s name.
I spoke with rugby director Steve Diamond to see the setup and learn how it all will develop, Williams said. “I’m just excited to get into it,” he said.
Williams is the 14th player to join Newcastle since Red Bull’s involvement with the club led to its signing.
On Friday, they play at home against Saracens to begin their league campaign.
Williams is still hopeful of a century of Test caps after appearing in 93 games for his country and the British and Irish Lions.
He told the BBC this month, “I’ve not called time on that, but it would be impossible without a club.”
