The Prem.
Newcastle (15) 25
Cons: Connon 2 Pens: Connon 2 Tries: Christie, Christie, Benitez Cruz
Gloucester (5) 19
Red Bulls of Newcastle tasted victory in The Prem. for the first time since 2024 as they finally ended a 19-match losing streak with a 25-19 win against Gloucester.
With 20 minutes remaining, the Red Bulls were still holding on for their first league win since their takeover in August of last year.
Gloucester put on late pressure, but they were unable to score a fourth, final try.
Newcastle, who are currently at the bottom of the table but four points clear of Gloucester, took the lead early when captain George McGuigan barreled over from a maul.
At first, Gloucester couldn’t find an answer for the Newcastle forwards, and when Jamie Hodgson and Arthur Clark both received sin-binned for kicking each other, the penalty resulted in a second try for the hosts.
Christie touched down his first in Newcastle colors once more from a line-out and a maul.
Seb Atkinson drilled a hole through the middle of the match before finding Ollie Thorley who ran unaffected into the corner, which the visitors then used to extend their lead.
Second-half angst was understandable given Newcastle’s 10 point lead at the break and their abominable record of three victories in 52 Prem games.
When Thorley was sent a 20-minute red card for a high tackle, Argentina scrum-half Benitez Cruz looked home and dry as he showed his class to break away and score under the posts.
The performance was fantastic, according to the reviewer.
Alan Dickens, the head coach of the Red Bulls of Newcastle, told BBC Newcastle:
“It has taken a long time to come.”
“Groccoli came back and had the momentum at the end, but the performance was fantastic tonight.” I’m really pleased because there are so many positive things going on.
“Gloucester scored a lot of tries, and we were anticipating that they would be successful and would tire out our front five.” However, we had opportunities to earn additional points, so we will look into that.
Rugby director for Gloucester, George Skivington, stated to BBC Gloucestershire:
“At the end, we were starting to win, but it was the final pass in crucial situations.
We lacked opportunities, and that cost us. The two early lineouts by the forwards were not enough, and that ultimately cost us.
