It’s obvious that Emerald Fennell’s take on Wutheing Heights will prove just that with a clever, contemporary retelling that has already sparked interest. Not all love stories fade over time.

Emerald Fennell is preparing to bring Wuthering Heights to a fresh audience, and indications point to her version being far from conventional.

The filmmaker behind Promising Young Woman and Saltburn is tackling Emily Brontë’s timeless novel, and early glimpses hint at a bold, contemporary interpretation.

Wuthering Heights has been regarded as the most epic tale of love severing itself from the universe for decades. We can be sure that Fennell’s upcoming adaptation won’t be your cozy Sunday teatime drama because the movie’s trailer has been reported to brand it as “The Greatest Love Story” but it is one consumed by fixation, brutality, and ruin.

Heathcliff, a wealthy Mr. Earnshaw, is the subject of the movie’s central plot. His unwavering love for Catherine Earnshaw’s daughter grows so fierce and volatile that Hindley’s brother is deeply resentful.

Hindley causes a hostile rift between the two young men after Mr. Earnshaw’s passing, rendering Heathcliff to servitude. In the end, Catherine weds Edgar Linton, a choice that sends Heathcliff into exile, caught between her feelings for him and the stability that social standing offers.

Years later, he reappears, wealthy, depressed, and determined to destroy the families that once betrayed him.

The movie aims to highlight the intense tension and bold visual design that have become Fennell’s signature qualities. The adaptation’s heart seems to be centered on the moors, which features captivating character dynamics and a contemporary twist.

Artists like Charli XCX are already making original songs for the movie, which suggests that the soundtrack is trying to promote cultural dominance rather than traditional music.

However, some Wuthering Heights fans have taken to social media to express their disapproval of Emerald’s interpretation. One X user claimed, “The irony is that a story about prejudice and racism is SUPPOSED to be about the evils of prejudice and racism and goes with the wind is… gone with the wind.” I need no further evidence that no one involved in this adaptation has read the book.

Another critic argued that “they could have made this movie without making any pretenses that Wuthering Heights is related.”

And it’s obvious that the retelling doesn’t make any mention of predictability or safety, which is why anticipation is high. Wuthering Heights is set to be one of the most intriguing and buzzed-about 2026 adaptations thanks to a classic story, a brave director, and a cast that will sure stoke conversation.

A well-known and popular ensemble has been assembled by Fennell.

The cast is a compelling blend of well-known actors and fresh faces, evoking lively debates, and includes Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi as Catherine and Heathcliff, along with Hong Chau as Nelly Dean and Alison Oliver.
