In response to Israel’s unprecedented airstrikes against Qatar last month, which drew regional and international condemnation, President Donald Trump has issued an executive order in which the US pledges to guarantee Qatar’s security, including retaliatory military action, if the country were to be attacked once more.
Hamas leaders were in Doha, talking about a US ceasefire proposal for Gaza, when Israel claimed that attack was directed at them. The team of the Palestinian organization was also killed by a Qatari security officer, but not the leaders.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu apologized to Qatar on Monday for the killing of its citizen. During their White House meeting on Monday, Trump and Netanyahu jointly called Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani and offered an apology.
Trump stated in his most recent executive order that “the US and Qatar are bound together by close cooperation, shared interests, and close relationship between our armed forces.”
Qatar continued to support Washington in bringing about regional and global conflicts, saying it was a “steady ally in the pursuit of peace, stability, and prosperity.”
It is the United States’ policy to protect the State of Qatar’s security and territorial integrity from external attack, he said, in light of this history and in light of the ongoing threats to the State of Qatar from foreign aggression.
Washington attempted to repair the damage done to diplomatic relations with Qatar after the Israeli attacks on September 9 and maintain ironclad support for its allies, including Israel. The Gulf state had referred to Israel’s actions as “cowardly and treacherous.”
On September 16, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio traveled to Qatar for talks, a week after the attack and a day after Qatari leaders held an emergency summit in Doha.
Rubio claimed in a post on X that day that he had met with Qatari officials and that he had “reaffirmed our ongoing partnership for security in the US and Qatar and our shared commitment to a safer, more stable region.”
Majed al-Ansari, a spokesman for the Qatari Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stated after the discussions that his nation was “determined to defend our sovereignty and take measures to stop any attack from recurring.”
