In order to appoint a new Awujale of Ijebuland, the Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has appointed the Awujale Chiefs in Council to ensure a level playing field.
Oba Sikiru Adetona joined his ancestors on July 13, 2025, at the age of 91, after ruleing for more than 65 years, leaving the Awujale with no seat.
Governor Abiodun stated after a meeting with Awujale Chiefs in Council members in Iperu that “nature abhors a vacuum” and that it was necessary for the people of Ijebuland to have a new Awujale as soon as possible.
At the conclusion of the nomination process, he assured the Ijebuland population that his government would back any candidate that the kingmakers had suggested.

He described the council members as respectable individuals who helped to bring about the late Awujale’s successful administration by preserving regional harmony.
Because everyone in our lives has been in mourning, I had to wait until the 40 days have passed before calling this meeting. I believe that they are all deeply committed and devoted Awujalean chiefs, which is what makes them so special.
