After Ugo Humbert retired after a bad fall, Jacob Fearnley and Cameron Norrie met in a full-British meeting in the third round of the French Open.

When French 22nd seed Humbert quit, Fearnley, who succeeded Norrie as the country’s top female, was in a 6-3 4-4 lead.

In the eighth game, Humbert slammed against his right leg as he stretched for a return at 40-40.

Humbert bravely attempted to continue the game after receiving treatment and putting on heavy strapping before deciding it was impolite to continue.

Fearnley, 23, moved into the top 32 on his French Open debut, finishing 55th overall after a quick rise over the previous 12 months.

Federico Gomez defeated Argentine qualifier Federico Gomez 7-6 (9-7) to claim his place earlier on Thursday.
