Todd Muphy, an Australian spinner, is set to face England in the final Ashes Test in Sydney.

After Nathan Lyon was ruled out of the series with a hamstring injury, off-spinner Murphy, 25, was able to play at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG).

Murphy finished the series with seven wickets, better than the rest of the Australia team, and took two matches of the 2023 Ashes, including a particularly difficult third Test at Headingley, for a better average and strike-rate than the rest of the team.

“I’d say it’s a surefire way that they will play against me,” Murphy said. “They’ve been playing that way,” he said. If I’m bowling and playing, it will be the same.

You always have a chance when guys are attacking you, which does a little bit more intrusive. No issues if that presents itself.

Shane Warne, Stuart MacGill, and Lyon, three of the four top Test wicket-takers there, are among the SCG’s regular aid bowlers.

However, Murphy’s inclusion on Sunday (23:30 GMT on Saturday) is not guaranteed due to the erratic weather and the limited impact that the spin has had on this Ashes series.

This series, which includes the 21 of England’s 3-1 victory in Australia in 2010-11, is on pace to have the fewest wickets taken by spinners in an Ashes series of at least four Tests, with only nine falling to spin in four games. The Ashes series will also comfortably have the fewest combined spin bowled overs.

In his seven Test matches, Murphy has only taken 22 wickets, but he is not yet playing away.

Spin has declined in Australian Tests in recent years because of a combination of green pitches and a Kookaburra ball that provides more assistance to seamers.

As a result of his efforts to reduce the number of overs he has bowled in home series, Australia’s number one spinner has seen his average overs gradually decrease.

In Melbourne, England reduced the series deficit to 3-1 with a fourth Test victory in just two days. Australia did not play a spinner on the 10mm grass at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, and England’s Will Jacks did not bowl.

Spin only had a significant role in the third Test in Adelaide, when Jacks and Lyon shared eight wickets.

You must find a way to still be successful while playing the role that the team requires, Murphy continued.

After England’s previous session was impacted by rain, Australia were able to train at the SCG on New Year’s Day.

Ben Stokes, Joe Root, and Zak Crawley were the only players in attendance for England’s optional session, which ended in Melbourne. Other people spent time with their families in the city.

After seamer Gus Atkinson’s hamstring injury prevented him from playing for the team that won in Melbourne, the tourists will make at least one change. In his place, Matthew Potts is the favorite.

In addition, Australia has named its T20 World Cup preparations for February and March’s meetings with India and Sri Lanka. Despite having only one Ashes Test to play, Pat Cummins, the team’s captain, is included because of a back issue.

Mitchell Marsh (captain), Xavier Bartlett, Cooper Connolly, Pat Cummins, Tim David, Nathan Ellis, Cameron Green, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Josh Inglis (wk), Matthew Kuhnemann, Glenn Maxwell, Matthew Short, Marcus Stoinis, and Adam Zampa are Australia’s T20 World Cup starting caps.
