Willie Mullins, the Grand National-winning trainer, won the Breeders’ Cup Turf with a stunning late run, setting a course record.
The 20-1 chance won one of Flat racing’s biggest races under Dylan Browne McMonagle, with more than £2 million going to the winner at Del Mar in California. The 20-1 chance spent the majority of his early career jumping over hurdles.
Ethical Diamond, the Ebor Handicap winner in August, came out on top against second-placed El Cordobes and Rebel’s Romance, with Minnie Hauk out of the mix.
It marks the most recent milestone in Mullins’ remarkable career, which he better known as a jump racing trainer, who won the National in April with Nick Rockett.
With my son Patrick aboard, this might be closer to winning the Grand National. Mullins, 69, said, “I couldn’t believe it.
McMonagle, 22, the newly crowned Irish champion, described the training as “unbelievable.” There isn’t much bigger than this.
