According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), more than 1,600 Sudanese civilians fled the town of Kertala in South Kordofan in one day as paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) abuses increased.
According to the United Nations agency, 1, 625 people left Kertala on November 28 due to worsening security conditions brought on by RSF violations, according to field teams from its Displacement Tracking Matrix on Sunday.
Following RSF attacks on a number of villages in South Kordofan, including the kidnapping of young people for forced recruitment, this latest wave of displacement comes as a result of the SPLM-N’s support for the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement.
According to human rights organizations, tens of thousands of people have fled the three Kordofan states, North, West, and South, following weeks of bloody hostilities between the army and the RSF.
The RSF is in charge of all five of Sudan’s 18 states in the west, aside from some of the region’s northern regions, which are still under the control of the army.
The army, in turn, controls the majority of Khartoum’s largest city in the remaining 13 states, including the south, north, east, and center.
According to the World Health Organization, at least 40 000 people have been killed and 12 million have been displaced by the Sudanese army-RSF conflict, which started in April 2023.
