Following a fatal car crash near Atlanta, Georgia, Michael Sumler, affectionately known as “Chicago Mike,” the longtime acclaimer and vocalist for Kool &, the Gang, passed away at the age of 71.
The collision happened on Saturday night near Buckner Road, where Sumler’s car and another collided. The soul music icon, known as the “life of the party,” has received numerous tributes. Adrian Meeks, Sumler’s friend, told Fox 5 Atlanta, “It was a devastating blow.” “It’s like no, no, no, not Mike”.
Sumler was a well-known face and voice to generations of fans with a career that spanned more than three decades. He was the group’s hype man, bringing an unmistakable spirit to every performance and is renowned for his high energy and engaging audience.
In 1985, Sumler first joined the legendary band, where he would later serve as a mentor to a number of emerging musicians. His friend continued, “He always wanted to see other people succeed in the business that he’d spent the majority of his life.”
The band’s founding bassist and the last of the group’s original members, Robert “Kool” Bell, described it as “a bittersweet feeling.” Without Mike, the stage won’t be the same as it was before we lost another brother.
The Gang’s founding in 1969 led to the award-winning Kool &s, two Grammy Awards, seven American Music Awards, 25 Top Ten R&, B hits, nine Top Ten Pop hits, and 31 gold and platinum albums.
