TV star Melanie Sykes has shared a heartbreaking update with fans – saying she’s now “two-thirds bald” and in “so much pain” as she opened up about her health in a video wearing a hat and scarf.

The presenter, famous for Today With Des and Mel and the Boddington’s beer ads, explained she has an auto-immune condition and has been “ill all year”. An auto-immune condition is where the immune system attacks healthy and functioning parts of the body.

Addressing fans in an Instagram video she captioned “It’s been a while”, Mel, 55, wearing sunglasses and a Manchester United jacket, said: “I am not well, as you know. I’ve been ill all year. I’ve got an auto-immune condition, I’m losing my hair, I keep having crazy inflammation all over everything, and I am working on healing.

I’ve been taking a meditation teacher training course for three months. I was exhausted before I could finish it. I had no choice during the final two days of it in writing. She continued, “Most of my life has been very spiritual.”

She continued, “I’m in a lot of pain. I wanted to say hello because my lips and eyes are just so bad. I really have two-thirds of my hair, you’ll see. I laugh whenever I declare that I’m bald. Why, I have no idea. I can laugh thanks to God. Always make fun of.

Mel, who gained notoriety in the 1990s, declared to her 300,000 followers, “I love you all so much, I care about you all so much…

I just wanted to say good morning, I love you, and I want to share my thoughts and spiritual wisdom with you all. “Mental meditation is the key to joy,” I said.

The TV host started out on Channel 4’s The Big Breakfast in the late 90s, and went on to host Today With Des and Mel, Celebrities Under Pressure and Let’s Do Lunch with Gino & Mel and was also an regular guest panellist on Loose Women.

She also appeared in the 2014 series of I’m A Celeb, alongside Gemma Collins and Tinchy Styder. She finished in third place behind winner Carl Fogarty and X Factor star Jake Quickenden.
