At the end of the current season, McLaren will abandon the all-electric Formula E series.
Following McLaren’s earlier this month’s commitment to the world endurance championship’s Le Mans 24 Hours, which is its centerpiece, the decision was made.
McLaren, who entered Formula E in 2022, said it will make the most of its potential growth in its key markets.
The series plays an important role in the overall motorsport landscape, according to Zak Brown, chief executive officer of McLaren Racing.
“But the time has come to look at other opportunities that more closely juggle McLaren Racing’s overall strategic plan, such as our FIA World Endurance Championship entry in 2027.”
Mercedes, who had won back-to-back world titles with Nyck de Vries and Stoffel Vandoorne, quit the Formula E team after taking over the series.
McLaren’s decision to leave reflects their desire to concentrate on the most important aspects of their motorsport portfolio and acknowledge that they can’t compete in every category.
The company’s history is also echoed by its previous victories in the so-called triple crown of motorsport: Le Mans, Indianapolis 500, and Monaco Grand Prix.
They are the only company competing in these three motorsport championships because they made the decision to enter WEC. McLaren has set themselves the intention of recapturing the Triple Crown.
After the first five grands prix, Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris, the reigning F1 world champions, are in first and second place in the championship this year.
In addition to its three grands prix in Miami, Austin, and Las Vegas, IndyCar also includes a race entry in the Indy 500, the biggest race in the nation, in the US market.
After three rounds, McLaren drivers Christian Lundgaard and Pato O’Ward are third and sixth in the IndyCar series this year.
McLaren receives a direct marketing link to the company’s road-going, high-performance sports cars through World Endurance, which also provides them with the prestige of Le Mans. Ferrari, Porsche, and Lamborghini are among the many road-car manufacturers competing in WEC.
For aspiring female drivers, McLaren is a part of the Formula 1 Academy.
Formula E is a world championship, but it struggles to maintain a significant public image. Last year, Brown claimed that the series’ “big problem” was its inability to expand its fan base.
Similar to Formula E, F1 now has the opportunity to promote sustainability as a message.
The electrical component of the power unit will increase to about 50% of the overall performance from next year, as F1 already has highly efficient hybrid engines. Additionally, F1 is converting to fully renewable energy.
McLaren is also making strides toward its sustainability goals in other areas, such as by producing a circularity handbook, which was requested by the FIA and aimed at improving sustainability practices in F1 design and manufacturing.
Taylor Barnard and Sam Bird, who are fourth and 13th in the championship after the first five rounds, are McLaren’s Taylor Barnard and Sam Bird, who are also British drivers.
We are currently working toward finding a new owner and positioning this excellent team for success in the future, according to Brown.
