England coach Brendon McCullum has not ruled out appointing separate 50-over and T20 captains or appointing a player from a squad other than the current one to fill the position.
Following England’s exit from the Champions Trophy, white-ball captain Jos Buttler announced his resignation on Friday.
According to McCullum, England will conduct a review of the situation in the upcoming weeks before choosing a successor.
After England’s disastrous seven-wicket defeat by South Africa, McCullum remarked, “If it’s the same person, great, if it’s two, that’s great too.”
Give me a few weeks to figure out how to get this thing back on track.
Given that he was appointed vice-captain in January and led Buttler’s absence from last year’s clash with Australia, Batter Harry Brook appears to be the favorite to succeed him.
However, Brook’s regular presence on the Test side would cause problems when he was chosen.
Either he would need to rest in a white-ball series, which England have frequently used, or he would have to put in a lot of work to do while preparing for his Test commitments.
The white-ball captaincy could be divided, but since Andrew Strauss, Alastair Cook, and Stuart Broad took the captaincy in the early 2010s, there hasn’t been three.
England bowler Chris Woakes stated on the Test Match Special podcast, “I don’t see why it could work.”
“I believe that this is the stage where the cricket landscape can go.”
The formats are “very different.” Totally unique. The T20 game of 50-over is not just an extended version of it. There are more games in the game, which are more similar to Test cricket and allow for longer play times, not “it’s not.”
Over the past year, Liam Livingstone and Phil Salt have both led England in white ball cricket. A player who has taken the national team but isn’t currently a part of the team might be a good addition.
Sam Billings, an England wicketkeeper, did not play for England since November 2022, leading the Oval Invincibles to victory in The Hundred last year.
Sam Curran has captained for Hampshire in the Indian Premier League, but England dropped England last year, while James Vince, whose last international was in March 2023, has had success.
