UEFA is looking into four Real Madrid players, including Vinicius Junior and Kylian Mbappe, for allegedly engaging in inappropriate conduct during the Champions League match against Atletico Madrid.
The governing body of European football, UEFA, announced on Thursday that it had appointed a disciplinary inspector to investigate the unnamed allegations made during the March 12 round-of-16 game. Antonio Rudiger and Dani Ceballos are also involved in the case.
Mbappe grabbed his crotch during celebrations on the field to earn a penalty shootout, according to video clips that were popular on social media.
Any suspension would make it impossible for a player to miss Madrid’s first game of the quarterfinals against Arsenal on April 8.
After the shootout against Atletico, Madrid advanced to the quarterfinals. The decisive spot kick came from Rudiger, who led the team’s wild dancers all the way to Atletico’s home field.
Madrid player Jude Bellingham received a one-game ban suspended for a one-year probationary period in a similar case that UEFA prosecuted at the European Championship last year.
When Bellingham gestured his hand toward his crotch in stoppage time, he scored the winning goal for England against Slovakia. In extra time, England advanced to a 2-1 victory.
