Martin Clunes was a guest on the One Show tonight and was interviewed by Alex Jones and Roman Kemp, including announcing the death of a co-star.
Actor Martin Clunes announced the death of a co-star from Doc Martin whilst live on air tonight. He spoke about his “fantastic” former colleague during an interview after having worked together for a decade on the ITV show.
On Doc Martin, which aired for ten seasons from 2007 to 2022, Martin, 63, starred alongside dog Dodger, who played his character Martin Ellingham’s canine companion Buddy. Doctor made his medical comedy-drama debut on the fourth season that was aired in 2009. He is believed to have remained on the program until the ninth season in 2019.
It was later announced that Dodger had retired, due to having dementia, and that he wouldn’t be in the tenth and final series, which aired in 2022.
Whilst on the One Show this evening, Martin revealed to hosts Alex Jones and Roman Kemp that Dodger has since died. He paid tribute to the dog – whose trainer announced his death on social media in 2023 – on the BBC talk show.
Your character was always irritated by his dog, according to Host Roman in the interview. “Oh Dodger, oh yeah! “, Martin replied. That boy was fantastic. Sadly, they are no longer with us.
Martin went on to discuss his character, who wasn’t particularly keen on dogs. The actor said: “That was the joke I thought … ‘Who hates dogs?’ … that someone who hates dogs, but they all love him, and they just hang out with him.”
He explained to the two presenters on One Show that while he was yelling at him, throwing him around, and doing all kinds of things, he never actually shouted at him. I simply tossed my lips around before adding the shouting.
He continued, “We just had such fun on that, y’know, Me and Sonia Turner, his trainer, and Dodger”? He was fantastic when we pushed the limits of what we could do with him.
Sonia is understood to have announced Dodger’s death on Instagram in 2023. She later expressed gratitude for condolences that she had received over the news.
She wrote, “A huge THANK YOU to everyone who took the time to remember and send condolences,” in a post on the platform. Our little chap had received so much love and attention from both here and abroad, and Tom and I are truly moved and amazed. “Bless you, Dodger.”
Martin had previously confirmed that Dodger had retired. Speaking to Yours in 2022, he said that the character Buddy had been replaced in the final season of Doc Martin. The actor shared: “Dodger who played Buddy is still with us and he’s happy. It’s just that his trainer Sonia decided to retire him because he has doggy dementia.”
