Alex Marquez, from Spain, won the Malaysian Grand Prix to record his third championship victory.
The 29-year-old Gresini rider placed second overall in the MotoGP World Championship behind his brother Marc Marquez, who finished second in the sprint race on Saturday.
And he did it better on Sunday, finishing second behind fellow Spaniard Pedro Acosta by 2. 676 seconds.
Following success at the Spanish and Catalan Grands Prix, Alex Marquez has won for the first time this year outside of Spain.
Early in the 20-lap race, Marquez overcame Acosta before winning the race against Francesco Bagnaia from Italy.
Before being forced to retire on lap 18, pole-sitter Bagnaia, who won the sprint race on Saturday, was on course for third place.
Joan Mir of Honda took advantage of the hot and humid Sepang circuit to claim the podium spot.
Marc Marquez, the reigning MotoGP champion, was sidelined for the duration of the season due to a collarbone injury. He won his seventh title in Japan last month.
Prior to the collision between newly crowned world champion Jose Antonio Rueda and 20-year-old Noah Dettwiler, the Moto3 race was postponed and shortened.
Both riders were taken to a hospital, but both were conscious, according to the race medical director.
