Man Utd hold talks with trio over caretaker role

Manchester United have started discussions with former players Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Michael Carrick, and Darren Fletcher to become the club’s interim manager until the end of the season.

It is still not known who the main contender will be to appoint Ruben Amorim for the remainder of the campaign because talks are still in the early stages and are still sounding out.

After a turbulent 14 months in charge, Amorim was fired on Monday, with Fletcher appointed as his replacement.

The club intends to name a permanent replacement for Amorim in the summer, with the Scot appointing until a caretaker is appointed.

Fletcher and his former United team-mates Solskjaer and Carrick are reportedly considering stepping down, and another former United player, Ruud van Nistelrooy, is also thought to be a potential candidate.

In his four games as caretaker boss in 2024, Van Nistelrooy won three and finished with a draw.

When United fired Jose Mourinho in 2018, Solskjaer assumed the role of manager for three years before leaving in 2021 in a similar manner.

Since leaving Middlesbrough in June, Carrick hasn’t worked.

Roberto de Zerbi, who is currently employed by Crystal Palace, and Oliver Glasner, who is currently at Marseille, are reportedly the early contenders for the full-time position.

During his news conference on Tuesday, Glasner, who won the FA Cup with the Eagles last year, was asked about the link.
