Ruben Amorim, head coach at Manchester United, claims a January transfer window might be in order.
United incurred an additional $ 105 million in debt to pay off their summer transfer expenses, with club accounts showing a new £1.1 billion debt in November.
Although they spent 230 million on summer signings, Amorim’s squad’s weaknesses have been apparent all season, with central midfield and left wing-back priorities being prioritized.
Antoine Semenyo and Conor Gallagher are likely to be available next month and have the Premier League experience Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha that Amorim has found useful.
Although I’m not sure what will happen, Amorim said, “We may be able to do something.”
“We only know that we will only try to recruit players who we believe will be future players.”
Due to their commitments to the Africa Cup of Nations, Amorim considered making significant changes to his preferred tactical line-up after Mbeumo, Amad Diallo, and Noussar Mazraoui were sidelined for up to seven games.
Amorim said, “We change to a back four if we have to change to a back four,” before heading to Aston Villa on Sunday.
Many have argued that changing the tactical to a four-man defense and three midfielders would improve United’s defense and give Kobbie Mainoo his most obvious entry into the starting lineup. Amorim has previously refrained from making such a change.
When will it be difficult to predict when England midfielder Mainoo will start at Villa Park, especially with Casemiro suspended.
The transfer puzzle includes Mainoo’s situation.
The 20-year-old wants to leave on loan, as was the case earlier this summer, but he would need to because he is a regular member of Amorim’s matchday squad.
Neves, a former Wolves captain, appears to be willing to accept less than what he has been making since moving to the Premier League.
The Portuguese, who left Al Hilal in 2023 and rejected a new deal, would have to conform to Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s desire to end the 300,000-per-week contract saga.
His salary would still far exceed Mainoo’s, who hasn’t received an increase since signing a long-term contract with United in February of 2023, when he was just starting out in the first-team squad.
United would have to decide whether to grant Mainoo a temporary position in order to cover the cost of a replacement if they were to leave.
United sources are confident Amorim can find a solution despite many questioning how Semenyo fits into a team where Bruno Fernandes had to switch to a number 10 position after Mbeumo and Cunha were forced to play in central midfield.
The 25-year-old Ghana international has a clause in his Bournemouth contract that allows him to leave for £65m as long as it is triggered early in January. He scored for the Cherries in the 4-4 epic at Old Trafford earlier in December.
However, he is reportedly a target of Tottenham, Manchester City, and Liverpool.
In the problematic left wing-back role, Amorim might decide to switch to a permanent tactical shift or use Semenyo because he lacks an attacking option like Amad, who plays regularly on the right.
In any case, the United supporters will undoubtedly be pleased with his words because they have seen their team flirt with Champions League spots without being able to secure one over the past few months.
Amorim insists that any deal will consider this long-term perspective.
