After defeating Mostafa Asal at Toronto’s Revival Film Studios, British number one Joel Makin defeated world number one Mostafa Asal to reach the PSA Squash Tour Finals.
After the 30-year-old went 1-0 up in the third game, Asal, 24, left the match due to an ankle injury. The Egyptian then won the third game 11-10 and 11-7.
Makin won the tenth and biggest title of his career while appearing in his first major PSA final.
Following his victory at the Silicon Valley Open in October 2024, Makin won his second title of the year.
“I’ve just been chipping away,” Makin asserted. “It’s not been a quick process.
“It was a really high quality one, like last night [against Diego Elias],” he said. We had two excellent games, but the third was frustrating because we couldn’t keep going.
In the first game, it was really high quality, “At sudden death again.” It’s unsettling that he [Asal] wasn’t in the right mindset.
“I’m happy to win, but I want to win,” the statement read. When he plays well, I want to know how much I dislike him.
You just have to keep trying, keep improving, and come out and give my best performance on the night. “It’s been another good week, it wasn’t my best stuff in the group stages.
Olivia Weaver of the United States was defeated 11-10, 9-11, 11-8, 11-3 by world number one Egypt, world number one Nouran Gohar, who won the women’s trophy.
