Make Haaland captain all season? The FPL talking point

Erling Haaland, a striker for Manchester City, seems to be unable to stop him.

He scored 14 goals, six more than any other player, to earn him the Premier League Golden Boot in 2022-23 and 2023-24, and he is on track to do so once more this year.

In Norway’s recent international victories over Estonia and Italy, he scored four goals.

With 102-21, Haaland is the league’s top scorer, ahead of Brentford’s Igor Thiago, who is the second-best player in the league, over Gabriel, who is the next highest scorer.

Haaland has a chance to reach his century against Newcastle on Saturday, scoring 99 goals in 108 Premier League appearances.

So we have to consider whether Haaland should be our set-and-forget captain or whether we should look into other options each week.

There might come a point when you consider playing Haaland against a team that will play five at the back.

In a week when Arsenal (Spurs at home), Manchester United (Everton away), and Crystal Palace (Wolves away) have attractive fixtures, Bukayo Saka, Mbeumo, or Jean-Philippe Mateta might be a good choice for those with an appetite for risk. This is because a trip to St James’ Park is widely regarded as one of the toughest fixtures on the calendar.

There are weeks where I might be brave enough to face Haaland in gameweek 14 and Crystal Palace in gameweek 16 as we prepare for the festive season.

Saka and Mbeumo, two midfielders who looked fantastic last time out, could provide a substitute for Haaland. Mbeumo plays West Ham at home, and Saka plays Wolves at home, according to the two gameweeks mentioned.

We have always had a go-to captain for backing against Haaland, and Liverpool’s fixtures offer some hope for those who support the ex-Olympianian.

Salah has been sold by the most enthralled managers, but with a lot of Free Hit chips in store for a lot of people in the coming weeks, it is once more a legitimate choice with the armband.
