In single scenes, the movie has more heart, finesse, performance, and magic than some other films have throughout their entire running time.

Netflix’s roster will soon be relegated from the Netflix series with the title “the ultimate family film for all ages.”

The 1982 sci-fi film, which Spielberg both directed and produced, established numerous records (and remained so for a while) while also attracting a level of reverence from both critics and viewers that is uncommon. Melissa Mathison wrote E. T. the Extra-Terrestrial (or simply E. T.), with Spielberg himself writing the original idea. Spielberg’s fictional friend, who Spielberg had created after his parents split, served as the film’s inspiration and the character of E. T. Carlo Rambaldi created the famous animatronics for the film.

Featuring Dee Wallace, Henry Thomas, Peter Coyote, Robert MacNaughton, and Drew Barrymore, E. T. became an unparalleled box office sensation. Produced on a budget of $10.5 million, the film raked in an astounding $797 million globally according to Box Office Mojo. In fact, it was such a titan that it outstripped the worldwide earnings of Star Wars (1977) to seize the title of the highest-grossing film ever. This was a record it held for 11 triumphant years, until Spielberg’s own Jurassic Park toppled it in 1993.

E. T’s production was largely shot chronologically, keeping the actors’ emotional development in perspective throughout the film. A young boy named Elliott is spotted and befriended after a gentle alien becomes stranded on Earth. Elliott introduces E. T., as the alien is known, to his brother and his sister Gertie in his suburban California home, and the two children decide to keep its existence a secret. However, E. T. soon becomes ill, leading to government intervention and a terrible situation for both Elliott and the alien.

E. T. won four Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director, along with Best Original Score, Best Sound, Best Sound Effects Editing, and Best Visual Effects. The film continues to be a critical favorite despite having an impressive 98% of the critics’ approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes’ review aggregator. It’s a “magically wonderful movie,” one reviewer exclaimed of Spielberg’s creation. Steven Spielberg’s film about an alien stranded on earth will appeal to both kids and adults. It’s entirely funny and wonderful.

Another critic referred to it as ” spellbinding “, noting that ” E. T. The Extra-Terrestrial is a spellbinding foray that reminds us of human compassion and the eternal joy of cinema ” The movie has more heart, finesse, performance, magic in single scenes than some other films have throughout their entire running time, according to one glowing reviewer, who also uses an animatronic special effect as the main character.

One of the most significant movies of the 1980s, according to another enthralling reviewer, has remained influential for the past four decades. One fan shared, “See this when it came out as a 10 year old and just watched it again as a 54 year old.” One of the best movies that has ever been produced, in my opinion! Still brings me to tears! A film that will bring back fond memories for everyone in the family and for everyone! 10/10]sic]”.

Another pleased viewer states, “Few movies can be called perfect, this one is. This movie is a timeless classic thanks to Steven Spielberg’s brilliant direction, stellar acting, and screenplay. A third fan praised Spielberg’s creation, saying, “ET is a movie you can watch over and over again without getting bored.” One generational masterpiece emotionally rewatches the film with their children, while another emotionally states, “I just rewatched this.” One woman claimed it to be her favorite movie ever, describing it as being tearful. It is so timeless, magical, and beautiful.

On January 4, E. T. the Extra-Terrestrial will stop streaming on Netflix.
