Love Island alum Brett Staniland has shared the sad news of the unexpected passing of his father.
The former ITV star – who now applies himself to advocating for sustainable fashion – broke the news in an emotional Instagram post. On his Stories on Thursday, Brett, 31, shared a family photo and penned a moving message. “I’m sorry for those seeing this now and this is something I haven’t shared much of on here”, he wrote.
“Sadly we lost our Dad Mike yesterday after a short battle with cancer, which he was diagnosed with stage 4 in September. He fought as hard as he could for the last 6 months and it was unexpected to lose him so soon”.
The high fashion model shared: “He gave us an amazing life and lived out his dream of moving to Turkey and living a happy life there.
” We will be honouring his wish to be buried in the place he called home and we will lay him to rest here in Turkey tomorrow. He was loved by everyone and always did everything he could for other people. “

Brett concluded:” He leaves an irreplaceable hole in our lives but we will cherish our memories forever. Thank you to everyone who shared a friendship with him and loved him through it all. Love you always Dad, “adding a heart emoji after the touching tribute.
Brett’s twin brother Scott also shared the sad news, posting a photo of his dad holding him as a baby”. Yesterday, after a 6 month battle with stage 4 cancer, my dad unexpectedly passed away, “Scott wrote.
” He was an amazing person who gave us an incredible life. And I will miss him every single day. RIP Dad. Love you always. “
Brett has shown where his heart lies since leaving Love Island in 2021, completing his PhD and campaigning against fast fashion. Soon after leaving the villa, he also called out trolls who abused him online and to his face, making his stance clear against hateful remarks directed at him and other groups.
At the time, Brett said he found it ‘ very challenging ‘ to go out in public, and revealed:” There were a few bad situations at parties I went to and a lot of homophobic abuse against me. “
The former Islander went on to reveal that he found it incredibly tough not to read the bad things that were written about him on social media, as Love Island fans mocked him relentlessly.
” They say don’t read or engage with the negative stuff online, but it’s really hard to escape when it’s on Twitter, TikTok, Instagram and everywhere else, “Brett explained”. Nothing prepares you for someone coming up to your face and calling you a c**t or a f****t, it’s really challenging, but now things got better. “
Brett firmly added:” But calling me gay will never offend me. It does not affect me one bit. But when you choose words in a way so that being gay is deemed as wrong, that is when I have an issue with it. Homophobia will not run at all on here. “
