As early details for a potential movie adaptation of Love Island are being made public, the film might be coming to the big screen.
Love Island devotees who can’t get enough of the addictive dating show during summer and winter evenings might soon have a full-length film to add to their viewing schedules.
The ITV reality dating programme sends young singles to a stunning villa in hopes they’ll find romance with their fellow occupants. The show’s success has led to several international versions, including Love Island USA and Love Island Australia.
In addition to the main show, there have been numerous spin-offs, such as All Stars, which brings back fan favourites from previous series for another shot at love in the villa. Another well-received extension to the franchise is Love Island Games, which follows a similar format to All Stars but invites former cast members from across the globe, reports OK!
The reality franchise’s evolution has now been revealed, with ITV America executives reportedly considering whether to adapt the dating program for film.
Following a rise in viewership for Love Island USA’s sixth season, ITV America CEO David George revealed to Deadline that he had been considering how to adapt the show to film.
“Why are we not taking Love Island and figuring out how we’re going to translate that into the movie world?” he posed to the publication. “There may be something going there. I can’t even begin to tell you what it is, but there are those types of conversations.”
Many fans demanded that the idea be abandoned, with many others not so thrilled by the prospect of a movie adaptation. One person remarked, “Look, I love the show. Nevertheless, a film Hard pass, and one more chimed in, “If it’s a horror I’ll watch.”
A fourth critic remarked, “Well undiscuss it, but the real question is not can this work, but what does a Love Island movie even say the show has not already exhausted,” while another quipped, “The real question is not can this work.”
A fifth viewer joked that “the main cast will probably include Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell,” while another, making reference to the reality program’s notoriously slow broadcasting schedule, shared that you must go back to the theater every day except on Wednesday.
Nevertheless, others showed greater enthusiasm for the idea, with one devotee of the show exclaiming: “So making reality TV into reality movie? YOU MEAN I CAN WATCH IT ALL IN ONE GO?!”. Another insisted that former Love Island UK champion Ekin-Su should be featured, declaring: “It better star Ekin-Su.”
