Joe Gomez will miss “large portions” of the season due to a hamstring injury that may require surgery, according to Liverpool manager Arne Slot.
The England centre-back was substituted after 11 minutes in Liverpool’s FA Cup fourth-round defeat by Plymouth Argyle on 9 February.
Gomez’s first appearance came after six weeks of being sidelined by a previous hamstring issue.
The club have yet to decide whether 27-year-old Gomez, who has been limited to 10 starts this season, requires an operation.
However, Slot claimed that he “might,” and whether or not an operation is necessary, the defender will likely be out for a while.
“It’s a big blow for Joe and for us”, said Slot.
He works extremely hard to return, and after two or three minutes of that, he made a sprint. Now he has been missing for weeks.
So for a player, in every season, let alone in every season that they are anticipating, is always very difficult.
He will miss a lot of the season’s final stretch, but we anticipate seeing him back in the finale.
On Wednesday at 1:30 p.m., Liverpool will face Aston Villa in a bid to move 10 points clear of the Premier League with a victory.
