In a Leagues Cup quarterfinal against the Tigres UANL from Mexico, Luis Suarez scored twice on penalty kicks and beat Lionel Messi 2-1.
Messi skipped the Wednesday night game because he had won the game against the Los Angeles Galaxy.
“We all retaliate,” Messi said. He wasn’t feeling well when [coach] Javier]Mascherano] spoke with him today. After the game, Inter Miami assistant coach Javier Morales said to the media that we preferred to take a step back and not risk him.
After Jordi Alba’s cross struck the arm of sliding Tigres defender Javier Aquino, Suarez converted his first penalty.
In the 67th minute, Angel Correa scored for the Tigres by cutting through the defense to bring the equalizer.
Then, in the 89th minute, Suarez scored the match-winner from the penalty spot after the ball once more hit Aquino’s arm in the box.
Edgar Lopez’s late header ricocheted off both posts.
Before the second half even started, Mascherano received a red card. The Inter Miami coach was spotted speaking on the phone and giving instructions after being dismissed, which is against League of America’s rules.
“We were complaining,” he said. They said we should play like six minutes [of added time], and we ended up playing like that.
“I didn’t notice what was happening,” he said. When asked about Mascherano giving instructions via phone, Morales responded, “To be honest, a lot of things happened on the bench.
Jordi Alba, who had suffered a lower leg injury in a collision late in the first half, left early in the second half.
He took a knee hit, according to what we know, but the medical report is still pending.
After the teams played a scoreless draw in Carson, California, Miami and Florida rival Orlando City won a semifinal Leagues Cup game 6-5 on penalties against their compatriots in Orlando.
The Concacaf Champions Cup will be won by both the finalists and the third-place match winner, with the winner of the competition obtaining direct entry to the 16th round of 16.
