With a 2-0 victory over Queen’s University at Windsor Park, Linfield advanced to the second round of the BetMcLean Cup.
Chris McKee opened the scoring in the 18th minute by heading home Charlie Allen’s cross after an early penalty was blocked.
When Tommy Smyth’s header forced David Walsh into a save, Queen’s University, who have impressed since they were promoted to the Championship, had a chance to equalize.
In the 51st minute, Matt Yates added a second for David Healy’s side from Sam Taylor’s cross, but McKee struck the woodwork shortly before the interval.
On Tuesday, October 7th, Cliftonville will host Coagh United in one of its 14 first round ties, while Ards’ tie with Dungannon Swifts will complete the last 32 on Wednesday, October 8th.
